The federal government is not subsidizing any petrol. A barrel of crude oil in the international market is $85 as at today, that’s the equivalent of $0.51/liter. Convert $0.51 to the current exhange rate of $1100, you get naira 561. According to the international market a price of a liter of fuel is naira 561. It hurt me so much that people who have held sensitive position in Nigeria can’t calculate this easy mathematics. The federal has not subsidized petrol since tinubu was president. We need to do our own research before coming online to embarrass ourself

However, now that the Naira is gaining value we expect the story to change.

In any policy there will always be room for self adjustment. There's no way the government would have allowed such a sensitive product to the swings of the open market.

In principle fuel subsidy is gone but the government has allowed self adjusting mechanisms. This means that if the exchange rate adjusts then the government adjusts it from the subsidy and if the refinaries start
production then the price will be adjusted from the price of crude sold to them.

There will be no major adjustment of the open market price of the product.

Three reasons subsidies are bad


Over-consumption
Setting fuel prices below market prices encourages over-consumption, with no significant linkage effects on other sectors of the economy. Linkages are usually created when the consumption of a good or service results in the emergence of new economic activities. Consuming fuel beyond a socially optimal quantity does not have that effect. Instead, it diverts resources away from more productive sectors of the economy. Negative outcomes
Subsidising fuel exacerbates pollution, global warming, and road accidents – what economists call negative externalities. This is when one person’s actions negatively affect other people that are not part of the actions.

Inequality
Subsidies reinforce inequality. The artificial reduction in the market price of fuel benefits upper income households the most because they are the ones who use the most fuel. They own the most cars in Nigeria, especially the ones that guzzle petrol. Nigeria is among the countries with the least number of vehicles per capita, with 0.05 vehicles per person or 50 vehicles per 1000 Nigerians. With an abysmally low minimum wage of N30,000 ($65) per month and non-availability of car loans, most Nigerian workers cannot afford a car.
