PRESS RELEASE: West African Youth Congress (WAYC) Condemns Racist and Discriminatory Practices by Chinese Supermarket and Extortion by British School in Nigeria

April 23, 2024

The West African Youth Congress (WAYC), a non-governmental youth advocacy organization representing the interests of young people across ECOWAS member states, strongly condemns the discriminatory actions of a Chinese supermarket situated at China General Chamber of Commerce, along Yar'adua Road in Abuja, that has reportedly barred Nigerians from shopping in its facility. Such racist and discriminatory practices are unacceptable, especially when carried out on Nigerian soil.

The recent reports of Nigerians being denied access to this establishment based on their nationality is a clear violation of human rights and a demonstration of xenophobia. As an organization committed to equality and justice, WAYC calls on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade and Investment and Chinese Embassy, to take immediate action and demand accountability from the said Chinese Supermarket. Furthermore, we urge the Police, Department of State Services and National Intelligence Agency and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and order a probe into this criminal behavior.

In addition to this, WAYC expresses deep concern over the reported exorbitant school fees charged by Charterhouse, a private British school, which demands 42 million naira per annum for each primary school student and a non-refundable registration fee of 2 million naira. This blatant exploitation of parents and guardians, especially at a time when many citizens struggle with poverty and the minimum wage remains at a mere N30,000 per month, is deplorable.

Such practices not only perpetuate inequality but also breed corruption by encouraging those in privileged positions to exploit their advantage for personal gain. We call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, British High Commission, Department of State Services and National Intelligence Agency to fulfill their mandates by preventing foreign institutions from extorting Nigerian citizens and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all.

WAYC reiterates its commitment to advocating for the welfare and rights of the people of ECOWAS member states, particularly the youth. We recognize that policies and events in Nigeria have socioeconomic and political implications across the region, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by injustice and discrimination.
