The real enemies of this nation are those who organized and sponsored the Ojota subsidy protests because the fuel pump price was N120 per liter but are now keeping quiet now that the pump price is over N1200 with the attendance scarcity.

It's only in Nigeria that you will see some questionable characters piloting their affairs and some senseless urchins will be praising them in an empty stomach

How can a criminal and a thief like Gbola Tilumbu be a president and you will not suffer?

This one you are seeing now is just ' testing the microphone'. Have it in mind that he is not up to a year oh. By the time he is through with his administration, half of una would have been dead from hunger and depression. Most of the married men are having issues with their wives because of financial constraints caused by this senseless thief. Just enter any hospital now, almost all the married men are diagnosed with high blood pressure because of this man's policies.

120 a litre was around $0.67 and N1000 a litre of today about $0.76 so let's learn to be fair when making comparison.

The govt of 2012 did not bring dollars from their villages, it is still same crude they sold to provide forex and thus keep the naira where it was then. Lets learn to critique with fairness.

And what was our purchasing power then...
What was the minimum wage

Because Nigerians do not want to pay the market price of petrol and power.

That is why you have epileptic power and epileptic petrol supply.

Right now, you all are supposed to pay N184 per kwh of power, and N1000 and above for petrol. Yet, only 20% of us pay above N184 per kwh for power now, and petrol is below N800 at most filing stations, N900 at worst.

SO, at the end, nothing would smoothly run.

Subsides are supposed to bridge the gap, but are usually not sufficent. Corruption is a part of the issue, but the main thing is that it costs money to produce petrol and power.

And if you are not paying above the cost of production, issues are going to arise.

DO you have issues with your phone usage? Issues with food supply? Or issues sending a parcel? No, because they all are allowed to charge their prices for services rendered. Power , like I said is supposed to be N184, yet until recently, 100% of the country was paying below N71 per kwh. Now it is 80%

See, profit lubiricates things. take away the right of profit in the name of helping the poor, and providers will find it difficult to give you a-grade service, because it would make them so broke, their accounts would be reading something like minus one million dollars..lol.

You won't sell your product below what it cost to produce it to help poor nigerians.

You're right but talking about that in isolation as though the people simply want to enjoy free things is misleading.

You can't pay a person a tenth of their salary, demand a 100% of their work, and still expect them not to complain.

Either pay the man 100% what he's earned for 100% of his work or cheat him to the tune of 90‰ and accept his 90% reduced output.

Poor Nigerians are not poor because they're lazy, they're poor cos the bastards keep looting their income.

Well, corruptuon is a big problem, and we got to hold people to account.

But the problem is, we cannot expect manufacturers, producers and tradespeople to sell below the cost of production to help the poor. As you can see, doing so has not worked at all, and has made things worse in the petroleum and power sector. It's caused chronic losses, poor productivity, wrekced many refineries, and reduced power generation. NO profit, wahala dey.

Meanwhile, OBJ let the GSM people charge expensively from the word go. People were saying that government does not want poor people to own phones. Obe Ess of the guardian even produced a editorial cartoon where MTN was called the bitter connection and econet was inspired to shortchange people's wallet.

But because the people doing GSM could set their prices, they could make profit, and attract investment, from within and without...and could pay for expanding their network. Add improvements in technology, and today a lot of poor people own phones. IN 1986, such a thing would have been impossible even for the middle nigerian class.

Sadly people want to be paid. Unless you want a government like the DPRK and the old USSR where government dictates your price and makes you live a 'spartan life' so that eveyrone is equal...

Sorry for quoting you again.

Telephony is an expensive thing. When GSM came here, it was expensive. Very much so. MY first sim in 2004, and it took me two years to make the plunge...cost me N7000. Ntel. I did not even get MTN till 2007..when the price had dropped to make it make sense.

Yet because government let there be free market, it made sense for investment to flow into GSM, and for us to go into a point where phones went from being for the very rich...to even poor people having phones.

That is how the free market works.
Okay good we actually towing the same line.. I want a free market too just like the GSM of early 2000s that will usher in investors.. remember we run a democratic system where vast of the electorate no longer trust the government due to years of corruption. We’ve the civil societies Labour group and opposition parties ready to hijack the country if the masses sufferings become unbearable. I think bulk of the work lies on the government now.. tell the citizens your plan shun corruption and maintain a lean government with less spendings on frivolities and more on capital projects.

Even if we do all that...and we must fight corruption and maintain a lean government, it is not going to cause enough money to be generated for subsides

What is spent in Aso Rock for one year is ...ie the budget for presidency...200bn naira. Subsidy costs for this year may pass N10 trillion.

The problem is, if we want subsides that work, without getting us into debt (Buhari maintained subsides by getting us into more and more debt especially via ways and means)...we got to have a diversifed economy. And the only way we can do that is by removing subsides on power and petrol so that they make enough profit to work properly....

God knows I wish there was another way.

Well, keeping subsides to help the nigerians below the poverty line is why we have massive debts, and bad refinereis, and a massively corrupt subsidy regimen.

It's basically a between the devil and deep blue sea thing, and something our leaders have faced since 1973.

Niger republic, has a poverty rate bigger than Nigeria. And yet, fuel costs N1000 and above, because they are also very poor to pay for subsidies, and because the refinery there...which runs on domestic crude...is a dollar earner...so it has to earn a profit.

The better way, really, is free market. Selling fuel , even at N700 and less, is a nice way to ruin things. At least, with a free market, we would have something called investment...which helps generate jobs and more jobs.

Because the government retained the right to control their prices/set prices for them.

As at now, the discos need to charge consumers N184 to make a profit. Only about 20% of consumers are charged at that level. The remainder 80% pay far below N100...meaning discos lose money...and that has knock on effects for the gencos, and the tcn...no money to do much.

You won't let government set your prices if you were a businessman?

Until you guys stop praising your oppressors they'll alway rip you guys off.

Because their crude oil production is not high enough...and again, resource dependency. Changing to industrial from resource dependency is a long hard road. Most african countries avoid it for many reasons...

You people run to gsm whenever you want to make case for free market but run away from diesel and kerosene that have been deregulated since 2011 yet no investment or jobs in that sector. How com? Tell us about that too

Meanwhile petrol has not been deregulated, meaning anyone refining crude in Nigeria is still going to lose money on refining petrol, which would impact any earnings from diesel and so forth.

That's the koko.

The pilgrimage one, in particular, is wrong. But most NIgerians want it, and even christians agitated for their own and got it. Here we are.

Also, disagreeing with you does not mean I support the corruption of this government. As I have said here times without number, we have to hold our government responsible.

And corruptiuon is a bad thing, and the reason why it flourshes is because we are a resource dependent nation. Removing subsides and allowing the power sector work with profits , meaning we become more indiustrial and attract investment is a way of stopping corruption or reducing it...because if our economy is investment and industrial based, corruption threatens its survival....and thus it can't be tolerated
