I stumbled onto this while researching nursing salaries in Canada. It pays very, very well. You get a competitive salary, and everything you need they cover. I'm just going to dump info here on what it's like, pay, conditions, and etc. 2 Likes |

I've been reading about people's experiences with it, and most of them haven't encountered high volumes of certain kinds of patients. Even the more experienced ones working in cities found it challenging. But I suspect there are many Nigerian nurses who would find both the kinds of patients and the limitations of remote medical care more manageable. I think the hardest part may be isolation. But it's still a challenging situation. I also think it may be a better option for younger nurses with no children, or male nurses. It can be done short term (a few months), and people can make substantial money in just that short period. One concern I have is the safety of women. I'm still looking into that, but so far it doesn't appear to be an issue. 1 Like |

The reports I'm looking at aren't very informative about the experience of nurses. They just confirm basic things like working beyond scope, being relied on heavily, and other things I think I've already mentioned. One thing that's important to note is that these communities are rural and remote, but not necessarily to an extreme. And the populations we're talking about appear to be 10K to 30K people. |

I'll post pay info later. I really hope some of you, who are capable of handling this work environment, explore this option. It pays so well and there's no long-term commitment. And the communities need and appreciate you. |

You don't pay for housing or transportation. They put you in a hotel, college dorm, house (shared with nurses), or hosted house. But food can be expensive. The pay below seems typical based on info I'm getting from different sources ($60/hr or 130k to 150k). It doesn't show pay from overtime, and it seems all of them do a lot of overtime (1.5x pay per hour). I'm not sure if this is Canadian or US dollars. What's kind of cool about this is you can sign on for a short period (a few months), earn as much as you would get in a year elsewhere (or much more), and you can take off. There are other flexible nursing jobs, but this might be the most flexible. It also allows you to develop your skills and experience in a really short time, so you don't miss out on professional development even if you never work more than half the year. Short periods of work are also unlikely to be held against you. In fact, experience in this role (probably like military) may make you more attractive to large, high-paying hospitals. |

These places are mostly not habitable, they have only few spots which many aren’t interested in. No social life , minus 40 degree weather and long hours is a recipe for depression. 2 Likes |

Generalmerchant:Travel nurses travel throughout a state and across the country working temporarily in hospitals and medical facilities that have shortages. What I'm describing is going to tiny places in the middle of nowhere with limited infrastructure and doing nursing work for months or longer. Travel nurses make good money, but based on everything I've seen, remote nurses make far more and make it in months, not a year. |
