They want money. Fx has had some bangers over the years sha but nothing on the level of shogun. They probably won't have a series like this again for years. It would be dumb not to milk it for all its worth from a business standpoint.

Storywise it isn't the best decision. But if they cook this just right they could have a cash cow for years.

lol. Just wondering where the story would be coming from Sha, source material don finish, so they'll be plucking stories out of thin air. Same thing I think they did with Squid game after the creator said it was only going to be one season. Let's just wait and see how it goes sha.

Oyaskii what do you think of this??

https://variety.com/2024/tv/columns/shogun-moving-drama-emmys-limited-1235988104/
interesting read.

FX pulled this same gimmick with "The Bear" last year, pushing it to comedy cate at the Emmys, instead of drama cate, potentially avoiding a head on collision with HBO's giant, Succession, that was having it's final season and was a sure Emmy win magnet, and it paid off big with "The Bear" clearing about 8 Emmys in the comedy cate, even though, in actual fact, it is like 95% melo dramatic with serious undertone and even if there was humour it was very subtle.

Now again, they face the same dilemma again this year with "Shōgun", which was clearly intended to be a limited one off season affair, but with Netflix pulling off "Baby Reindeer", in the last couple of weeks, the limites series category is looking like a fierce dog fight, as I can't even lie, "Baby Reindeer" is a ridiculously good show and the subject matter is an award magnet 🧲, and the awards available for the limites series category are not that much compared to that of Drama category.

So FX, throwing Shōgun into the drama category ring, means it has more than enough chance to scoop so many awards, as i think its the best show, all things considered so far this year, if for anything, it's the best drama show out this year so far. Then, there are 2 curveballs associated with this move, the first been it's a foreign language show, but perhaps the biggest curveball imo, is that throwing Shōgun into the drama category, means it has lost it's limited series tag, and FX hands have been forced and are now open to making a further season, completely outside the source material which they have exhausted. Fillers is that, they have already gotten Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Toranaga) to sign on, and i can't blame bro for signing, it's a guaranteed massive payday, but i don't even know how a season 2 would look like, i have tried to envision it, and it always comes up sour but if there is one network i trust is FX but this is gonna be thier biggest task yet. If the S2 is officially greenlit, they have the chance to etch it as one of the best shows ever with a good S2 that is plausible or completely ruin the legacy of S1. The S8 of GOT is stil fresh, and universally accepted of how terrible it was, and it did almost ruin the legacy of the entire show, but the saving grace of that, was that it had 5 or 6 really really good season to ride on, but Shōgun doesn't have such luxury, it's go big or go bust for it, i am afraid.

I fell they'll combine different stories around the period of the events of shogun. Or it'll be a sequel, a backstory before the death of the Taiko.

I see. Yeah, I've been reading reports this week that overall this year's Emmys lineup is looking very weak as there's serious low numbers of eligible shows due to the strike. And the drama series is criminally less competitive.

I need to see this "Baby Reindeer" soon enough to see what the fuss is all about.

Also is it the same shït that's played out with FX's "Fargo" TV show? I see that show in limited TV series and I get confused cos I know it's running on its 5th season by now. 🤔😕 Or is it cos its an anthology series format? Seems Fargo is among the favourites for Best actor role in Limited series so its a win-win for FX if Shogun stays clear and give it better chances against Baby Reindeer.

As for Shogun S2 I don't see a way they're doing it good with how it ended. It's only filler after documenting how Ishido is defeated in which we already have an idea how. Source material is dried up....unless they plan on borrowing from the true life events its adapted from. I still see it ending poorly cos I can't picture them matching the sauce they just served or even surpassing.

That will take genuine wizardry in writing to pull that off, which I highly doubt. The original creators never planned for a follow up, so what's gonna be the motivation.

Anyways, I always felt S2 was inevitable after seeing the show becoming FX most successful show ever. They've never seen this popularity and success in a while.

Brotherly!! when i said it here that they will eventually jump on it to make season two, many people replied me to say i don't know what i am saying and that the source material bla bla bla bla and i just laughed.
Bro!!! a show like shogun with that casts, that unbelievably casts with impeccable characters and you are telling me, you just want to make season 1?
It's like seeing a goldmine and then saying, you don't want the gold mine and that you are okay with little cash you made from lottery.

A proper, professional writers can turn shogun into the next big thing in television history.
So much and i mean literally there are so much to do with that series.
So much, one in a lifetime battles like in the games of thrones, you can even see that the female leads were not actually bothered in showing their nakednesssss, you can see that at some point, it looks as if the queen has some dark magic or something like that.

They can use every explorable means in making this show one of the best of all times including sea battles between ships like in vikings, land battles, inter city battles and guess what, shogun season 1 was like during winter, we didn't even see a proper summer japan, they can take a clue from the game of thrones like something dangerous during winter or something dangerous during summer and this is where the introduction of dark magic or horror comes in, like samurais of the dead.

I just hope they pull through and use a real professional writers, i tell you for a fact that we will be seeing shogun renewed for season 5 in few years time.

The backstory before the death of Taiko, is highly unlikely imo, since it most likely takes out the Anjin's timeline, and with the show already losing two key characters in Mariko and Yabushige, there best bet, is to continue with the characters they have now, and just move forward with the story and since the source material is done, they might just draw from the real life events. Tokugawa Ieyasu who is depicted as Toranaga and the Anjin became close friends after the Battle of
Sekigahara, and Tokugawa Ieyasu ruled as Shōgun and the Anjin became his ally in trading with the Europeans, Taikō son came of age and assumed Lordship over Osaka, and even laid claim to the Shogunate in real life, so these are the stories that i feel, they will explore in S2. It may seem like they are clutching at straws, but since the beginning of time, there have never been a big motivator like money!.

Yeah, it's weak and any show minimally above par has a shot.

It is really good but it depends on individual perspective sha, and it is Netflix's strongest shot at the Emmy.

Yes!. Emmy classify Limited and anthology together, so Fargo qualifies since it is an anthology! and FX potentially don't want it and Shōgun in the same category, maybe that's why they submitted the latter as a drama.

On the best actor for a limited series, i can tell you now, that the guy from Baby Reindeer did better than John Hamm in Fargo S5, and will most likely get it, imo.

Bro, there is no wonders money can't perform 😩, but it will be so bad if they are doing this mainly for monetary reward rather than creative and artistic reward. They should find a balance between both. They spent years developing S1, this S2 is most likely going to be developed quickly to strike whilst the iron is still hot and it leaves little room for a proper creative direction. Like it most likely going to be real life events as i explained to geezyk. We have to wait it out and see.

Reminds me of "Money Heist", it original channel it aired, billed it as a 2 season event, they Netflix bought it and started remixing things and unnecessarily elongating and it become bland, the dip in quality between S1S2 and the other seasons it's so wild, the writing took a tumble and it just turned into a glorified Telenovela. I haven't even seen the final season and i don't even care.

House of Ninjas.....8/10

Really good Japanese show about a modern day "Shinobi" family faced with the task of upholding old traditions, family value and holding the security fabric of the nation under the shadows.

Really entertaining watch. Great production value and superb action. It has very good storytelling too as well as good character development.

I still think there are a lot of great shows coming out this year tho. The problem tho apart from the strike is most of the award magnet shows are done and dusted. But series like Abbott Elementary, House of the Dragon, The Bear, the Sympathiser, the Boys, Cobra Kai, Hacks, Shogun, Eric, Ripley are likely the main award series this year. Baby Reindeer is a limited series so it doesn't have a lot of competition

HOD,The Bear and The Boys will be next year, as only shows that aired between June 1st 2023 and May 31st 2024 will be considered. We are having 2 emmy awards this year because the one for 2023 was pushed to January. 2024 because of the strike, the one for this year holds around September.
