Governor Similanayi Fubara of Rivers State has vowed to teach his opponents political arithmetics, indicating the total collapse of the peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

The Rivers helmsman issued the threat on Saturday at a thanksgiving service held at Western County High School in Ahoada East local government area of the state.

“We are going to teach them a lesson of political arithmetrics. What that small boy will do to you, you’ll know that khaki no be leather (sic),” the governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Ehie Edison, was quoted to have said.

He said the crisis rocking the state had to do with resources control and not the dismantling of political structures as alleged by Mr Wike.

Background
Mr Fubara is at loggerheads with his predecessor and now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike, a rift that has factionalised members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

President Bola Tinubu waded in persuading the warring parties to accept the political solutions which TODAY POLITICS learnt were unconstitutional.

Part of the peace deal involved the recognition of defected members of the assembly who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) who by virtue of their defections lost their seats in the assembly.

The aggrieved lawmakers, who are loyal to Mr Wike returned, overrode the governor’s assent and passed several bills while threatening to resume impeachment proceedings should Mr Fubara fail to re-present this year’s budget to the assembly for considerations.

The governor appears to have implemented most of the conditions but is yet to re-present the budget.

On Wednesday, a faction of the assembly members loyal to the governor elected Victor Jumbo as its speaker. The faction also approached a state high court and secured an order prohibiting the Martin Amaewhule camp from parading themselves as state lawmakers on Friday.

What you sow is what you reap, as they say.

I remember clearly that Rotimi Amaechi once said that it was difficult for him to go to Rivers state. The reason was Nyesom Wike. On at least one occasion, their convoys met in Port harcourt and there was exchange of gunfire between the security aides. Wike made life very hard for his predecessor and former boss. What goes around, comes around as they say.

No one knows the source of Wike’s humongous and unquestionable wealth. While Fubara was the accountant general, he was haunted by EFCC for brazen looting of over 400 billion. Wike his him in the government house and made him the next governor. Secrets are shared between them, just like it happened with Amaechi. One cannot doubt that Fubara holds Wike by the “blokkos”, as it is termed.

The legislators with false confidence suffer the most. Obaseki made an example of them in Edo state, of what the governor can do to legislators. He shut down the house and ran his government. Wike must thread softly with his “structure” in Rivers state.

Again, if not for financial gains, how is it that one man single handedly funded the election of the entire political office holders in Rivers state? He openly boasted about it and no one in the anti corruption office queried him about it. The other person in the House of Representatives who attempted to contest with his personal resources, was harassed and detained. They ensures that he did not get out until the primaries were over.

In all, the citizens are very weak. Until the citizens begin to demand accountability from leaders, they should expect greedy and irresponsible people to continue controlling their lives and serving them pittances to survive.
