The Executive Director/CEO of National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Shaibu Husseini, says the Federal Government has approved the prohibition of money rituals and glamourizing of vices in Nigerian films.

Husseini disclosed this while speaking at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood held in Enugu on Wednesday, May 22. The NFVCB boss said

today, we are facing an industry emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians and stakeholders.

“When my predecessor approached the former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed on the need to make a subsidiary legislation to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies, he saw the need to include money rituals. Others included in the regulation are ritual killings and glamourising other crimes in order to further sanitise the film industry.

Today, I am delighted to announce to you that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004 has approved the regulation.

The minister has approved the Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion and Glamorisation display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits” Regulations 2024.

We have also forwarded the approved copy to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette’’ he said

According to Husseini, besides the health implications, glamourising smoking in films poses a negative influence on teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigeria movie viewers. He said that the board was set to undertake detailed enlightenment programmes in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, local communities, faith groups and other institutions.

Not early enough, KOK don cash out. grin

Meanwhile, the tail does not wag the dog. You ban Tobacco on screen but do not ban it in real life. Are you not fooling yourself?

Banning them on screen does not stop them in real life. The screen display is just an imitation of the reality. They didn't start on the screen and are not even well-demonstrated on screen. Nobody takes the screen own serious.

The only good thing about the ban is that those Asaba producers using mediocrity to cash out will either become creative or fade out.

Nobody takes the screen own serious. Let me withdraw this statement. Some people get the motivation for silly things from the screen.

Does it make any difference?

Rituals has been around on Nigerian TV for over 25 years. So it is ripe for ban in 2024.

Hopefully, hookup (prostitution) & cultism videos and related depictions will get their own ban in 3074. We are getting there gradually.

Great! they also banned smoking TOBACCO on TV. I hope they have good lawyers to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the singer or half naked girl twerking and smoking on TV is just graphic effects and not actual tobacco.

Yes it does.

Remembered when I got into tiktok the first time, all I saw were videos of young boys performing rituals and displaying huge sum of money from the outcome. If I were not an adult, I would have fallen for that and probably have my head whirling around rituals and may have even gone ahead and used someone for ritual. I deleted the useless app that same day.

Or is it the joke some adults make with Kanayo. O. Kanayo sacrifices which they think is funny.

Anyways, I pity this new generation.

Way to go

Most Yoruba movies have no themes outside glorifying ritual killings

In most film a very poor man kills human being and within the next 3 to 4 screen he's already wealthy, no business idea, no production of any life changing goods or service, just murder and wealth been mutually inclusive
Re: FG Bans Glamorisation Of Ritual Killing, Tobacco In Movies, Skits & Music Videos by emkz: 4:38pm On May 22, 2024
This is commendable.

We must use our movies to sell our culture.

We glamorize money rituals, smoking and women. If you see American movies, they glamorize their police, CIA, FBI, DEA and some superhero. Why can't we do the same? We rather prefer to sell a brother poisoning his brother and chasing the brother's widow from the house.

Finally, these skit makers must be regulated. There was one who threw an artificial snake on someone from the top of a tree.

People can die from shock and heart attack when such things are done.

I support.

Featuring ritual killings and other abhorrent practices in films, music etc normalises them.

Good ..

Long overdue..

What really baffled me so much was the way some idiotic skit makers were making fond of Junior Pope's last statement.......Na from that very day I begin detest most of these skit makers.
Re: FG Bans Glamorisation Of Ritual Killing, Tobacco In Movies, Skits & Music Videos by papyjaypaul: 4:42pm On May 22, 2024
They should have done this a long time ago.

I never knew there waa a guy called ogbt or ogtv cultist until I watched an episode and the things he said was so.sad, I was wondering how that was skit. I have never been a fan of the macaroni spaghetti boy because comedy is hard work, it is not sexualising women or using women as content. Youth of today believe they must do crazy thingsfor content and the algorithm will reward them because it is better to have the black man knacking, doing sports, entertainment, crime, betting than what will rescue them from their captivity

I don't blame the young people because they don't know better, I blame the old people who have not only destroyed the nation but have no examples, legacies and lessons to pass to the young. If they take over politics, leadership and every thing, at least, pass good morals to the next generation.

This is nonsense. It doesn't make any sense.
With the abundance of st*pid people heading different sectors in Tinubu's Government it will take a 1000 years to see any form of positive development

Are they saying portraying such movies is a reason the movie industry is not growing and is a reason for the spike in crime.
