MEEVEET: Just for fun, I decided to run the numbers with AI. Let me know if you disagree at any point: Cost of Building and Operation a Kilometre of Rail Line Infrastructure Costs: Construction of new rail lines: ₦28.8 billion - ₦86.4 billion per km Station construction: ₦72 billion - ₦288 billion per station Operating Costs (per km per year): Track maintenance: ₦144 million - ₦432 million Rolling stock maintenance: ₦144 million - ₦576 million Staff/operational costs: ₦288 million - ₦720 million Overall Operating Cost Estimate (per km per year): ₦720 million - ₦2.16 billion And the annual operating costs to maintain and run an urban rail line in a city like Abuja could conservatively range from ₦720 million to as high as over ₦2 billion per kilometer per year. How many users ride the trains monthly? To estimate the likely number of Abuja residents that would use a metro rail line on a monthly basis, we need to consider several factors: Total population of Abuja: Around 3.6 million as of 2022. Percentage of population that constitutes potential public transit users: This typically includes working population, students, and others who need to commute regularly. A reasonable estimate could be 30-40% of the total population. Mode share of rail transit: This depends on factors like convenience, accessibility, cost, and availability of other transportation modes. For a well-planned and affordable metro system, the mode share could range from 10-25% of potential transit users. Let's assume: 35% of Abuja's population (1.26 million) are potential transit users 15% mode share for the metro rail system Calculation: Potential metro rail users = 1.26 million x 15% = 189,000 So based on these assumptions, a rough estimate of the number of Abuja residents likely to use a metro rail line on a monthly basis could be around 189,000. Estimate a break-even ticket price point Assumptions: Length of urban rail line: 45 km Annual operating cost range: ₦32.4 billion - ₦97.2 billion Number of passenger trips per month: 189,000 Number of passenger trips per year: 189,000 x 12 = 2,268,000 Average trip distance: 10 km Step 1: Calculate the revenue required to break even (using the operating cost range) Minimum revenue = ₦32.4 billion Maximum revenue = ₦97.2 billion Step 2: Calculate the break-even ticket cost range Minimum break-even ticket cost = Minimum revenue / Total passenger trips per year = ₦32,400,000,000 / 2,268,000 = ₦14,292 per passenger trip Maximum break-even ticket cost = Maximum revenue / Total passenger trips per year = ₦97,200,000,000 / 2,268,000 = ₦42,876 per passenger trip Assuming an average trip of 10 km, the break-even ticket cost range would be: ₦1,429 - ₦4,288 per passenger per 10 km trip How long would it take to break even at the lowest possible pricing? Assumptions: Length of urban rail line: 45 km Minimum annual operating cost: ₦32.4 billion Minimum break-even ticket price: ₦1,429 per passenger for 10 km trip Average trip distance: 10 km Number of passenger trips per year: 2,268,000 (based on 189,000 passengers per month) Step 1: Calculate the annual revenue at the minimum break-even ticket price Annual revenue = Number of passenger trips per year x Minimum break-even ticket price Annual revenue = 2,268,000 x ₦1,429 = ₦32.4 billion Step 2: Calculate the annual operating surplus/deficit Annual operating surplus/deficit = Annual revenue - Minimum annual operating cost Annual operating surplus/deficit = ₦32.4 billion - ₦32.4 billion = ₦0 At the minimum break-even ticket price of ₦1,429 per passenger for a 10 km trip, the annual revenue from 2,268,000 passenger trips would be exactly equal to the minimum annual operating cost of ₦32.4 billion. This means there would be no surplus or deficit. In this scenario, it would take an indefinite amount of time to fully break even and recover any initial capital investment costs for constructing the metro rail line. The operations would essentially be running at a break-even level perpetually. |

MEEVEET: Evading building infrastructures firstly in areas they will yield returns has bled Nigeria dry. NITEL died after Digital telephone exchanges were first built in tiny Arewa towns while Onitsha and Aba struggled with morribund Analog telephone exchanges. ☎️? Thereafter, Nigeria resorted to use of the present toyshop called Mobile phone. Oyibo who invented mobile phone cannot touch mobile phone for communication if landline telephone is nearby. |

UNFORTUNATELY, YOUR LOT MAKE THE SOUND MINDED ONES DO THE RIGMAROLE WITH YOU IN ONE DYSFUNCTIONAL COUNTRY. Rail transport systems are most expensive to establish. They are first built in areas where the returns are quick to come. The returns are then invested in less profitable areas. |

His is not just a hater. To get a glimpse of how he thinks, see him with his previous monier on this thread. It was when he probably realized how foolish he sounded that he quickly went to like an olosho that change location (moniker) and start forming virgin in new location. Only that in his own case, old habits refused to die so he could not even form virgin for long. https://www.nairaland.com/8078084/popular-obi-supporter-questions-benefit Crucialgem: 1 Like |

Re: Abuja Metro Rail To Operate Free For Two Months by Amah70: 3:17pm On May 23 |
9jatriot: You can use revenues from crude oil in the Niger delta region to build modern development infrastructures in Sambisa forest, sustain the infrastructures with proceeds from crude oil, but avoid building similar infrastructures in the Niger delta region, because you won the civil war against Biafra. That's not far different from what Nigeria has been doing since 1970. In saner climes, railway lines are built first in areas where they render quick profit; the profit gets used to multiply such railway lines in lesser endowed areas. If you don't do it that way; failure of the investment is waiting for you. The northern region, including Abuja, boasts that it's the poorest and least educated region in Nigeria. Kwontinue. |
