Yes the are essential but building them with loan is foolishness especially when revenue is less than debt servicing and recurrent expenditure like Nigeria

It's same as a struggling man using loan to build mansion in his village
Okay, let the railways charge tarrif that enable them to make back the money to pay off the loans.

But many Nigerians will say no.

Meanwhile, our roads are getting overloaded, so we do need rail.

Nigeria...between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Ivandragon's proposal makes sense though.

No route can make 20% of their running cost not to talk about being profitable

Those trains are just loan wasted on feel good projects
So are you proposing that govt shd charge more or the trains services shd be scrapped?

This is not new . Train derail in western world. Maybe you are in village and haven't traveled out of the country that's why you see it as another failure of govt

Egypt is building a new capital with loan, they are running on huge debts, I'm sure experts like you will criticize it if it's Nigeria.
The first thing to check for is the ROI regarding every investments, definitely they would have considered the ROI before embarking on such development. However can we really say same thing about Nigeria? the level of embezzlement would have killed every intended profit even before kick off. What has happened to the rail line built from Nigeria to Niger? What about the other rail line that was attacked by some bandits sometimes ago? what are the ROI on those infrastructures?

The next one is the white elephant project tagged COASTAL HIGHWAY, theres no crime in building infrastructures with loan but the problem is accountability on the part of the government, unfortunately they cant really be trusted.

You are very correct. Abuja - Kaduna route also involved millions of naira spent by police on helicopters and ground security patrol / escort of the train. At the end it is at total loss to FG. It is just another subsidy provided to citizens along that route.

I cried for 8 years during the implementation of Lagos to Ibadan railway. By then, I posted as babaolofin. All my observations have come to pass.

I think by the time we start to move cargoes by trains, FG can recover operating costs from Cargo movement.

Infact to buttress your point, the EMR that runs between Crewe and Nottingham in England is still diesel powered and I can attest to many cross country trains in the UK, Nigerians don’t just like appreciating their country

Those rich businessmen you see around you and almost all the countries in the world run things with loans.

Capital is not as cheap as you think coz countries can't just print money and use it for projects.

Nothing bad in loan but to be well utilised is the koko.

Businesses are encouraged to take loans but government to use it to build infrastructure when you runna budget deficit?
Re: Abuja-bound Train Derails In Jere, Kaduna State (Photos) by bentenny(m): 2:41pm On May 26, 2024
It's not enough to build projects like the rail system....it must always be maintained atleast 4-5 times every year to avoid issues like these!

Was watching a documentary about train travels on Nageo world and you could see the maintenance culture of the advanced countries despite having mostly difficult terrains esp during winter!

We really lack maintenance culture in this country esp when it concerns government structures or facilities!

Lol this is what happens when you build a road based on sentiments

If this was Lagos Abuja rail... You can charge people 50,000 and people would still pay

Abuja Kaduna are already more expensive than the road transportation

You did not answer the question. The govt of most countries in the world subsidise transportion for it's citizens.

And who told you the rail service is for govt to make profit?

What will be the gain of the tax payers if the train service and other services are not subsidized by govt.

Pls next time you want to criticise, make sure it's a constructive criticism not from the place of hate.

You are very correct, but rails are an essential component of industrial development.

In my opinion, the first focus should have been on building cargo rails to connect industrial centres/areas. That would have been more profitable, reduce the wear and tear of having large vehicles on the roads and improve road safety.
Also reduce cost of transportation thereby reflecting on price of commodities. Also, ease of doing business for many would be increased.
