How We Have Been Scamming Ourselves by Ortintin(op):
So I was trying to buy a new phone for my aged auntie as a birthday present but I was shocked not only by the insane prices of 120k - 300k but the ridiculous specs that these phone makers are using to deceive people. I mean my budget was like 50k-60k android phone with specs like 2 or 3 Gig Ram and 32 Gb Rom but I was shocked that these phones are quickly going to extinction and most of what is in the market now are 4 Gb, 6Gb, 8Gb, 12 Gb Ram and 64, 128, 512Gb memory phones.

The sincere truth is that even most of these 3Gb Ram phone, over 90% of phone users don't even use up to 2GB, and now you are coming up with 4Gb, 8Gb thereby creating inflation in the economy and unnecessarily increasing prices of items.

Let me also quickly mention some phone that boast of 40 to 50megapixel of camera and still the picture quality still sucks to a 16mp phone. Even some of all these double, triple camera still sucks to a phone that has just a camera. Let me not even mention the ever the same OS and same system update that all these giant companies have been using to deceive people and unnecessarily waste data and resources.

Personally have been using this my Motorola 3GB, 32GB ram phone for the past one and half years now and i feel no need to upgrade anything except the memory space which my 32GB Memory card compensates for it.

In short, we shouldn't let all these companies keep pushing us but they should be at the mercy of the consumers and not the other way round.

Though I have a lot to write about this but let me just stop here cos I believe a word is a seed. Besides this is the perfect time for new phone companies to come into the game with budget phones that will make these phones giants to sit up.

Quick test: try and check your Phone Ram used and lets see if anyone is using up to 3Gb. Personally i use 1.9Gig (go to settings, click about phone or find build number. Tap this build number multiple times till it brings the developer icon. Then go to system and click developers option to find the amount of Ram you used.
Re: How We Have Been Scamming Ourselves by immortalcrown(m):
You failed to point out the scam. RAM is not part of the scam.

Camera and ROM are where the scam lies.

Examples:
4GB RAM with 128 ROM is a scam on many phones because most of such phones will hang if 98% of the ROM is used.

A phone with 4GB RAM will have 128 ROM and still have a space for a memory card. This is a big scam because the 4GB RAM cannot even carry the 128 ROM talk more of carrying an additional memory card on most, if not all, of such phones. The only advantage in this case is that the memory card space can be used if you just want to use a memory card to copy a file from the phone.

High camera pixels are a scam on many phones. You won't know until you try to zoom in on something that is very far. Also, most of those phones cannot record a video on 4:3 aspect ratio.
Re: How We Have Been Scamming Ourselves by ClassicEvilSpir: 2:16pm On Jun 16, 2024
Lot of these phones with multiple camera setup use poorer sensors, than their one camera sensor predecessors. On the aspect of ram, I believe the newer os and the recent apps are more ram hungry, and given the fact multitasking is the minimum, one wouldn't want to minimise an app, then return back only to lose all progress, hence more ram. However though, some brands are guilty of subpar ram, and even fake camera; a phone appears to have 2 cameras, but only one is genuine.
Re: How We Have Been Scamming Ourselves by JasonNOTStatham: 2:43pm On Jun 16, 2024
Some apps takes a lot of RAM, also some are virtual RAM e. g. 2GB + 2GB RAM. Some phones have cheap hardware for high specs and may overheat after minutes of operation. Also some camera are interpolation to make it feels "among".

3gb, 4gb ram phones are getting obsolete with the release of new apps and operating software/system and you're saying that's the cause of inflation?

And for your quick test, here's mine on idle

Attached above already,
For android 13 to run on 3gb ram it has to be highly optimized.
Except your phone is outdated and running an older Android OS, then 3gb is fine.
A 3gb / 32gb Motorlla Phone is probably on Android 9.
That being said, you can't say cause you use less than 3gb on an old phone, over 90% of the whole world use less than 3gb.
You then say it's creating inflation in the economy, like the phones are being produced here ? grin.
These phones are sold worldwide buddy.
Country no good normal.
Yes, then 60k was worth something, could get a brand new entry phone, but 60k then is like 120k now.
You really can't get an average brand new phone for 60k.
And about the megapixel you're right, there's more to a phones camera than just megapixel alone.
No let them Techno and Infinix whine you with big megapixel, Maintain composure, all na thrash.

I know there are many ways pple can counter my points in this write up but just view my grievance. In next 2 years dis pple will be coming up with 48 ram n 1 terabyte shit n just normal phone users won't be able to get budget phone except u will buy fairly used. I get it u are a heavy phone user, but when u bring out 10 phone users, hardly can u see 1 using up to 3gb ram and yet these is going off the market already.

Besides am using moto g pure n its updated to android 12

How can they scam me when I never patronize them?
Every OG phone user knows techno them lies a lot about their product and over hype their inferior products using megapixel as a major selling point, if most people did proper research before buying a phone, that company will cease to exist.

About your second point, it shows you’re indomie generation grin
Don’t you know they were days of Symbian phone with 256gb to 512mb ram and some androids running 1gb ram. 3gb ram sounded too much then.
Thats evolution for you, the world will keep moving forward, things will get more advanced and will need efficient hardware to keep up.
New tech now would always become obsolete in the future.

It will seem that the company are pricing the phone higher but it’s usually a fixed price every year for the next gen versions, it’s just the dollar rate in your country that’s messed up.
For example, Redmi will release Note 8 for 99$ in 2019
Then release Note 9 for that same 99$ in 2020.
Same price but when converted to naira itll definitely be higher than 2019’s Note 8 price •

So plz steady on throwing jab, i might not knw more than u on tech but you are not talking to a novice here.

I get your last point on the dollar rate, and yeah its a valid point for the increase in price. But is that why they should take all this 3gig - 32gig phone of the market cos they want to sell 4-64, 128gig phones?

Go to slot, and all these phone store u will hardly see 3gb phone not to talk of 2gb.

Y i like motorola is because dey don't use cheap casing like the 3 popular android brands (trans...). I don't even need pouch except screen guard. And the phone still looks very clean after years of usage n u cn sell the fairly used at decent price.

New apps are getting heavier.

For example, you can use two apps from Meta on a slow phone or it would freeze.

You can find 60k phones (try online if your location doesn't have it). The tragedy is, their is no android phone of 30k. Even Java phones goes for 15k these days. When you convert the prices to dollars, you would understand why.

Nigeria telecom companies are not truthful with the kind data they sell in Nigeria. Here in the UK I do monthly sub which gives me 7gb. I was surprised when their customer care told me that I haven't used up to 1gb in the last 3months me that's always in the internet streaming matches, tiktok etc

I have not bothered since because, as the OP said in bringing up this very good topic, everybody is pursuing the best and greatest, even without the money -- or the need for it.

I repeat: I'm using the lower spec of this same phone: 3gb, 32gb -- to type this message right now. It is my main phone, even though I play with Google Pixel 6 Pro, Samsung S20+ and co until buyer comes for them

Baba most of us here on nairaland are still tech savvy. Go and do general survey and come back and tell me number of ram people are using. For example while U guys do like 24Gb to 30GB monthly data the average folks on the street, uncles, fathers, mothers, bros n sis are doing just 1 or 2 gb a month or a week data subscription. U guys that use more than 3gb are the 10%, while the 90% of naija smartphone users dont use up to 3gb ram.

The truth is 3gb ram shouldn't be quickly obsolete, but cos this phone companies just want to up prices they keep coming up with 4,6,8,12gb ram. Even most of our laptops n system run 4gb ram so why should phones just jump to this level that 3gb won't be in the market again.

Camera and ROM are not Scams, it just that the average person doesn't go into the pro mode of a camera app and not all people need a 16/1TB device. And about it being expensive, Yes. However a 300k brand new phone false under budget category. Our Naira is at fault here.
