The appropriate time to start school is actually 6years, primary 1. Nursery school is a waste of resources |
| Re: When Should A Child Start School? by Mimiranky: 7:27am On Jun 22, 2024 |
5years is the best.... But if you have money to waste the child should start at 1yr 6months.... Up till now I don't see the benefits of KG class... Primary 1 straight up |

I followed the example of Mikel Obi (at least no one can say money was his problem) with his twin girls in far away Russia and enrolled my daughter at age 3. Hardly any year passes when she does not win the overall best pupil in all the school's campuses (they have about 4 in Lagos) and called to the podium to receive gifts and shake hands with the school proprietor. When we wanted to change her school some time ago, a delegation of teachers of 4 came to dissuade us as soon as they suspected that plan was afoot. Back then the mum was almost crying when she was 2 and I said let's wait until 3. I cited Mikel's example. Thank God her dad, who's intellectual, agreed with me. I consider anything earlier than 3 as a waste of time and money, and undue mental pressure on the child (except both parents are extremely busy people). Mind you, even without formal education, the child is not "playing" at age under 3. He/she is actually subconsciously getting the best of informal education from both parents and any caring relative around. The child is actively learning basic/foundational language, communication, and relational skills without any of the parties actively conscious of it. This stage of learning shouldn't be formalized for the child at his/her level of brain development. Formal education should start at 3. |

3 years and above...it's absolutely stufid to reduce the time u spend with ur kids at any age below 3....U need to make an impression when the kid is young & form a very strong bond...... Forget anybody way dey rush put kids for school earlier using excuses 'my child is genius' blah blah....if he is a genius, all the more reason to allow him to develop well, before throwing him/her into the world |

Valentinooo:Then they end up making the child vulnerable to bullying, exploitation and initiation into vices at a young age. If you so much value your work over your child, while bother giving birth, that's irresponsible. At the end of the day they spend their fortunes taking the child to rehabs, police stations and fake pastors. Ndi busy parents. |

The OP probably thinks he's still in the 70s. Describing pre-school as something stressful for children. Lolz. Pre-school is a very fun place for them. I'm talking of standard pre schools o. Firstly, their classroom is decorated like a home. Secondly, they watch cartoons, educational videos and sing rhymes all day. Thirdly, they do play learning. Fourthly, they eat and sleep at will. Most importantly, they are well looked after by professionals. When our second child was 2 years old, I and the mum had thought we wouldn't enroll him until he's 3. Just like you, we wanted him to enjoy playing and at home and of course to save our money. After dropping off the older sister, we decided to take a tour of their preschool section. We were blown away! It was marvellous and wonderful. That same week, we enrolled him. And it turned out to be one of our best decisions. I'll give you just a few pointers; firstly, enroll them in a school that is very close to where you live. At that age, it's not ideal for them to be waking up too early or using the school bus. Secondly, enroll them in a good school so that the issue of poor hygiene and maltreatment wouldn't happen. Furthermore, if enrolled in a good school, your child's learning will surprise you so much that you'll gladly promote the school to all and sundry. ![]() |

If am in position where I have the power, every child will start school at age 3 that's is nursery 1, then all school closes latest by 2pm, if the parent wants extra lessons for their children, then the agreement of payment will be between the teacher and the parents, not the school and the parents pays part payment of the money bfor the lessons start. Secondly there will be nothing like junior waec, once the child gets into secondary school, he uses five years for studies and thereafter writes the ssce exam and get out into the higher institution of learning. Even the secondary school too will close by 2pm. |

I started school officially at age 5 topped my class, from Nur 2 till SS3. If you want proof,I fit upload them. In essence what I am saying is, brain development differs from child to child. Some children can't speak clearly until they are 5, that does not mean they are dull. It's your child evaluate him or her, worse of is allowing the Nigerian education to grade your kid, you might have a genius and our almighty system will say he is a dullard because he can't cram some stupid shi... |

| Re: When Should A Child Start School? by brainhgeek(m): 8:10am On Jun 22, 2024 |
It depends. I'd recommend 5 if you live in countries like Canada, USA etc but in Nigeria, you can start when you are ready and the school is equipped to handle the preschooler. Some Nigerian schools actually do well in handling preschoolers. However the greatest mistake would be enrolling a child in school before 5 just for the parents to have a breathing space. In the real sense, school actually starts from the home. The firsts years of a child should be spent bonding with the parents and imbibing family values and laying the foundation for good morals |

One of the things I like about myself is that I don't give in to pressure, if you like talk from now till tomorrow you're just wasting your time. All my classmates got married before me but I didn't listen to any of them when they were advicing me to pick one of my girlfriends and settle down. They ain't in my shoes, none of the girls got what I needed in a woman. I later found the right baby girl and I am happily married now. My child would start school at the age of 3, I will buy learning aids and we'll brush her up before she starts......I trust my wife on that, she's a born teacher. |

Lovenorth:Some mothers are just lazy to train their kids. For a child to start school at age 3 na waste of pampers and baby food, fees for some nanny to care for them. Except and only if both parents are busy types Let's not forget 80% training comes from parent |

Lanrelagboi 3 years old is very ideal provided that you have found a way of tutoring your at home. I know a child who already could identify all of the letters in the English Alphabet at the age of 2, could identify 1 to 20, colours and shape. Learnt all these an more at home. The only thing they didn't take time to introduce to the toddler was writing skills by the time he got enrolled in school at three, the only challenge was learning how to write. It wasn't really a challenge because he already knew what he was writing at the moment he is among the best in his class if not the best. That home schooling background is the very basic. You could go to YouTube for videos on how to go about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRAzwiWBJM4?si=X3RouXjoifjd9q_j |

I think that age 3 you mentioned is just your thought, not standard. Because, Nigeria Policy in Education pegged the age around 5 - 6 (I can't say exact). An intelligent child will continue to be intelligent irrespective at what age he/she start school. Peculiarities abound why people send their children to school at any age. For example, my wife is a teacher all my children from 3 months are already enrolled in her school creche. And none of them had less than 90% as average(At primary level). Infact None of them had anything less than Distinction/Excellent so far, so good. And from age 2 I do enroll them to different school from where she is teaching. They have proven to me they are excellent student. What I am saying is, children are different no particular age is too bad or too good for them to start school. |
