I live close to a small swampy forest. Someone close by next compound I think rears Cats

The opening to the ceiling is not in my flat..

I read a similar story on quora. The young man said the moment the usual night noise went down & it was time for bed, then came this noise.
It started slow, then fast, and went on till dawn. Morning his neighbor came and apologised that it was her cat playin with its table tennis ball.
It's both funny and not because the man couldn't wink all through the night yet didn't know what to think.

So it's probably the cats. Some people don't mind having cats around but personally I hate them. If it's my house I'll just set traps for them or even poison

Most likely cats, otherwise house dey possessed. Maybe na ritualistic foundation

It's been happening for a while , and I can overlook it most times.
but last night's own was quite something. I woke up from sleep cos of it. And couldn't sleep.

I thought exactly along this lines too...
That it could be quite any of these things. A monkey has walked up the fence one time too.
But Cat is no. 1 on the list of suspect. Followed by large rats.
