Good morning house. Apologies if this has been provided before. Anyone with idea of price of 2014 Toyota Corolla gear box in Naija (I'm told this is the chain link type). Many thanks.
I was told it costs 980k for 9 pin SA model. The US model might be cheaper
Re: Toyota Gurus, Why Is The Toyota Gears Failing? by sultaan(m): 3:30pm On Jun 29, 2024
Those 200k plus miles Toyotas (corolla/camry)usually go for $500 at the auction. and if our people are willing to pay N5m more power to Toyota lovers.

Mechanics make so much business fixing Toyotas, that is why they recommend it
Toyota makes really good cars, but in the hands of uneducated Nigerians, it all ends the same way.

Those who have taken the time to educate themselves on the condition of the car they are buying and proper fluids to us will spend less during ownership

Not sure if you are aware that new Toyotas are also failing. I have a 2014 Corolla bought brand new that even parts sellers are not comfortable selling the gear only without the engine. It is a 9 pin SA model. I was told to buy engine and gearbox together.

Clarify your point
You have a 2014 SA model you have been using since 2014 go bad, after 10 years of use in Nigeria.
Maybe your mechanic didnt treat it properly.

The 9 pin is more simpler than the American version it should be easier to fix if they claim they can fix 10 pin

Bought brand new in 2015 and lying fallow for 3 years now. From 550k to 980k with no guarantee unless I buy engine and gearbox. The US spec is very easy to get and adapts easily

My landlord is a Toyota addict lol, he was using a Toyota Corolla 2003, used for 4 years, he changed a compressor over 4 times, brake calipers twice, and replaced the transmission once, he sold it in a working condition when he wanted to buy 2017 corolla.
The 2017 corolla was bought Tokunbo, I could tell the car was in an accident because the trunk has imperfect shape, but well everything else was okay, besides the cracked windshield, he got it for 8 million ( early 2023), the car came with fan connected directly, all works fine besides this, it is barely used though.
Fast forward to this year, he bought 2007 Toyota highlander (15M), SUV works fine, fan connected directly also, a week after purchase, it overheated, they told him to change the radiator, he bought for 92k, car continued to work fine.
A month or so after, he was scratched by another vehicle around the bumper area at a shopping mall parking area, he sadly found out the bumper wasn't the original one, was a black bumper pained white (the SUV colour), he ordered another bumper from Lagos the next day, he wanted his car to remain in good shape and didn't want no patch work, bumper came and was replaced.
One day he drove out and didn't come back with the SUV, called his wife to come pick him with the corolla, SUV got faulty (less than three months), was a serious transmission issue, yet to be fixed even now.
What's my point, I don't think this has too much to do with the brand of the vehicle, I think this has more to do with age of rje vehicle, how many hands have used and worked on it, the maintenance culture and car care attitude of previous users before being shipped here, I will never believe in the reliability of any foreign used (Tokunbo) vehicle, as far as i don't know nothing about the previous users, our dealers here can be criminals too, buying a car as tokunbo doesn't really keep you from car troubles, Toyota is also definitely not trouble free/ fortified against abuse or old age.
All cars age and fall apart eventually, the question is how long if well maintained, and that's got no definite answer.

You have said it all. Growing up in Europe, my first car was a Toyota Supra and I upgraded to the next model of 1986. That was my first encounter with Toyota but I never made the mistake of shipping it to Nigeria because in the 90s, we never had the right fuel for the car. The Toyota that is being sold in Nigeria is not up to the level of a 1988 Supra both in performance and durability. Imagine a 2014 Corolla SA model that I will need to change the gear along with the engine in order to have peace of mind for a while.

Yeah, Toyota cars are failing, i just don't think many people talk about it, a friend's 07 Rav 4 transmission had to be worked on, i learned this at church today, the vehicle was purchased foreign used early 2023. I use 09 Sonata and the only thing I've fixed in three years is a fuse, this is not to say Hyundai is better than Toyota, but to say no brand is immune to wear or abuse, the past user of my vehicle (oyinbo) could have driven it less and maintained it better.
The point still remains, the older the car, the higher the chances of major components failing within a short time after purchase here as Tokunbo, from bad maintenance, to all sorts of abuse and or even unhealthy mods (relatively new trend), and regular wear, it is why i will pick a 2023 innoson vehicle that costs 18m over a 2018 Toyota/Honda or Benz at the same price.
I don't care so much about the brand, if I'm buying new and there's no major issues for recall or known issues from user reviews, if the car is new, then how long It serves me is mostly/totally up to my maintenance game.
A 2024 innoson/Nord/ or any of these brands that can be brought brand new here in Naija ( relatively cheaper than the likes of Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Benz of the same year) are good buys compared to older products of these big names.
If you get brand new money of innoson/Nord go buy am jeje get peace of mind for a few years.
The older the vehicle, the more the troubles to expect, quite simple, no brand, build or model of any vehicle is an exemption to this.
My next car is going to be a brand new car, I don't care what the brand is, just that it'll be brand new, near zero mileage with that new smell of factory leather and dashboard material, i need to talk about "breaking" in lol.

Very well elaborated but not all brand new cars are new. I recall years ago when Honda discussion continues came out into the market, Honda place were trying to sell off the end of discussion Accord with discount to make way for the new. Some of these brand new cars spend more than two years in the Customs warehouses before they are eventually sold off as brand new cars. You might be buying a 2019 car as brand new and it won’t last longer than the 2018 car you bought as toks. The auto industry is in a dilemma

For those Benz cars with ISM, they are the worst. If the VGS is dirty, that is where the scenario you described occurs but when the ISM fails, the car will be stuck till you remove the propeller to move the car away. If the shaft is out of place, the gear will never move even on gear 1. I know that these are mechanism to protect the gear but the stress involved is out of this world
ISM isn't gear...it's selector and it can be fixed ...also ,it spoils out if carelessness and rarely spoil

Any car is no car bro, just wanted you to give me your own honest personal opinion.

I want to upgrade from a corolla 2010 to a Honda 2015 or 2016, but the leg pull matter convo all over discouraged me, so thought of going for a camry 2013 to avoid leg pull.

But three days ago i saw a lexus Es350 leg pull like honda, and just today saw a corolla 07 leg pull like honda, i was not wondering whats happeneing, seems no car is safe from the leg pulling matter.

Leg pull is not restricted to these models of cars. I have been called one night to rescue a 2018 Range rover autobiography long wheelbase who fell into a pothole in Lekki and it's front leg pulled out. The owners are all the same. They want to manage first for the time being and the end result of being manager is the disgrace that happens to them mostly at night where they are at their wits end. It is not rocket science to detect the noise under the wheels.

Greetings, 👋🏽

You’ve raised a very important point. Over the years, we’ve seen Toyota gearboxes (both automatic and CVT types) develop issues that give the brand a reputation for gear failures. The reality is:
1. Electronic Control Evolution – From the late 1990s onward, Toyota moved from simple hydraulic systems to more advanced electronically controlled transmissions (13-pin, 30-pin, etc.). While this improved efficiency and fuel economy, it also made the gearboxes more sensitive to heat, poor maintenance, and fluid quality.
2. Improper ATF Usage – Many failures trace back to using the wrong transmission fluid. Toyota ATF WS (World Standard) is mandatory for most modern models, yet many workshops substitute it with Dexron III or other oils, which shortens gearbox life.
3. Neglected Service Intervals – Owners are often told Toyota transmissions are “sealed for life.” In reality, the fluid should be replaced every 40,000 – 60,000 km under Nigerian driving conditions. Failure to do this leads to overheating and premature wear.
4. Used Gearbox Imports – Most “tokunbo” (foreign used) gearboxes already have high mileage before arriving here. By the time they’re resold, they’re often at the end of their lifespan — hence the high failure rate and expensive replacements like you mentioned (₦3.5m for RX 350, ₦2.5m for Highlander).

The Way Forward:
• Always insist on the correct ATF WS fluid.
• Carry out preventive maintenance at the right intervals.
• Use professional diagnostic tools to address early warning signs instead of waiting until total failure.
• When replacement is unavoidable, consider professional rebuilds rather than risky “unknown history” used gearboxes.

As simple as it should be. May i add introduction of debris during shaft replacements and trans fluid changes. These are some of the major culprits.

More grease to your elbow.

Since 2011, I have been driving a Range Rover Sports and till today, I drive and repair and recover it across Nigeria. The truth is that there are no good cars to drive in Nigeria. The car that is suitable for the country is Volvo 760 Gle, 1987 model. Fuel, engine oil is available for the particular vehicle. Euro 5 fuel cannot work on a 2012 Toyota and so I wonder why I will buy a car and use my money to destroy it

Good evening, I have read about the company and all that you do. With the array of services, I might have a tinge of jealousy but we need good players in the industry and you are welcome. Toyota cars in the country are the best brand in the country and a lot of people talk about it's reliability and I wonder what is the reliability we are talking about? I used to work with Cars45 and they did their best but Nigerians were not ready to admit that we have poor maintenance culture of the cars we drive in the country. 9ja used cars in the country is not something that we should be proud about but we need to talk to the motorists and let them know the current situation in the repair industry so that they can safeguard their vehicles. Welcome and let's occupy the environment.

Good day, and thank you sincerely for the kind words and warm welcome. At Ryan Automotive Limited, we completely agree with you — the major challenge in our automotive industry is not the quality of vehicles, but the maintenance culture around them.

Our mission is to change that narrative by setting a higher standard in auto care through:
• Precision diagnostics with modern tools
• Transparent guidance so clients understand every step
• Excellence in execution using only trusted methods and quality parts

We believe Nigerian motorists deserve the same world-class service that’s available anywhere in the world, and with consistency, together we can raise the bar for reliability and trust in the auto industry.

Once again, we appreciate your encouragement. We look forward to working with stakeholders and motorists to build a stronger maintenance culture in Nigeria.

Please i want I want to upgrade from a corolla 2010 to a Honda 2015 or 2016, but the leg pull matter convo all over discouraged me, so thought of going for a camry 2013 to avoid leg pull.

But three days ago i saw a lexus Es350 leg pull like honda, and just today saw a corolla 07 leg pull like honda, i was not wondering whats happeneing, seems no car is safe from the leg pulling matter.

Please your humble opinioj which car do you think i should go for direct belgium, and ehat and what should i look out for?
I most likely got a very well maintained unit, the sonata has a different suspension design, that might be why the problem you speak of is uncommon with it, enthusiasts have argued a good maintenance culture will prevent failure, that is, replacing at the first sign of failure. Honda's are great, but I don't love CVTs, what 2015/2016 model do you intend to get?

The CVT matter tire me, been driving for years now but had no idea automatic still have different types which includes this CVT, is anything wrong with it? Is it all honda models that are CVT? Wanted to go for the 2015 or 2016 Honda accord.
This Hyundai elantra or sonata i was eyeing them too, but the issue of lack of availability of parts and mechanics for that brand incase of anything is the issue.

Euro 5 fuel cannot work on a 2012 Toyota and so I wonder why I will buy a car and use my money to destroy it
Bro really dont understand this fuel part not working on 2012 toyota, are you saying all toyotas in Nigeria like the 2012, our fuel is not compatible with them and the fuel is killing them?

We don't have the fuel for Lexus, Benz, BMW Vw Audi Range Rover Peugeot and all those turbo charged cars. These cars uses premium unleaded fuel and Nnpc since we phased out leaded fuel has been importing unleaded regular which made Toyota to gain foothold as reliable car in the country. Now there is Euro 6 fuel and Dangote is producing Euro 5 fuel which is still not suitable for 2010 vehicles of Range Rover and cousins and Toyota. Nissan has been recommending premium unleaded fuel since 2005, ditto Honda accord of 2008. That was why I recommeded Volvo 760 1988 model as the ideal car that is equipped with all the options that a 2013 Toyota camry has. As it was in 2001 when catalytic converter were failing because of the poor fuel quality we had till date, we are still having failing catalytic converters. Like I said earlier, we use our money to destroy our cars. Funny enough, a 1988 Volvo 760 Gle cost more than a 2010 Toyota camry abroad.
