“Conceal a Sexual Offense, Go to Jail for 3 Years”

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) met with
members of Ojodu LCDA's Community Development Committee (CDC) at their monthly meeting to further propagate the SGBV Message.

In keeping with the Agency's mission to eradicate sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, stressed the value of ongoing communication with CDAs.

She stressed that concealing a sexual offense is punishable under the law and could warrant a 3 year jail term and urged participants to speak up timely as required reporters when such situations occur within their community to ensure justice is served to perpetrators of SGBV crimes.

Pastor Segun Fayemi, Chairman of the CDC while welcoming the visiting delegation, gave an outline of the organization's goals.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for taking the lead and promised the community leaders' ongoing assistance in getting rid of the menace.

The Agency's Community Engagement Representative, Ms. Opemipo Ogunse, briefed participants on the gravity of sexual and gender-based violence and outlined the reporting guidelines.

She described the agency's services, the cooperation with the Police Family Support Unit (FSU), and appropriate reporting procedures.

The Questions and answers session allowed for interactions for community members to be very open.

Additionally, SGBV awareness materials were distributed to the attendees and were given access to the toll-free number 08000 333 333.

The Lagos State Government has converted the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) into the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).

DSVRT is a collection of professional service providers and officials that respond as a group and in a timely fashion to the various needs of domestic and sexual violence survivors by providing legal, medical, emergency assistance, Counselling and psychological and psycho social support. It is to encourage and create unprecedented level of collaboration among professionals working to end sexual and Gender Based Violence.

Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) is an organisation under Lagos state Government committed to ensuring total eradication of Sexual and Gender Based Violence in the State. Our mission is to provide sensitive services to victims of domestic and sexual violence while promoting healthy relationships as we strive to enhance our coordinated community response to domestic and sexual violence in Lagos State and indeed in Nigeria.

The reason I advised that you should contact these people is that they've got lawyers, psychological counsellors and other professionals that are needed to tackle this case. They are backed by the Lagos State Government and they know how to make the police do their work. They can also provide shelter for the woman and the child if the need arises. They are your best bet.

The Difference Between Some Nigerian Girls, And Al-Majiri, Is Plate.

Explanation.

Mandatory reporting = There are some professions that have a duty of care to the people that they serve. These professionals will often notice when domestic violence has occurred or when someone has been raped. People in these professions are mandated to report these things when they notice it, otherwise they could spend time in jail.

I am referring to professionals like midwives, doctors, teachers, etc.

Just last week a man was convicted because a teacher noticed that a child had been raped (she was behaving funny) and reported to the authorities.


Concealment:

Sometimes when a child has been raped (quite often by a family member), older members of the family might want to hide it, keep it in the family, etc, even when the child or someone else wants to report it. If you do this and you are caught and found guilty, then you'll spend 3 years in jail.

Sometimes an outsider might rape a minor and then pay the relatives of the minor some money to hide/pretend/conceal the offence. This could now land them in jail for 3 years.
