I Think I Have Been Scammed, What Do I Do? by Myaar648(op): 1:31pm On Aug 01, 2024
I posted an advert for my phone on jiji and yesterday someone contacted me saying he needed urgently. He proceeded to ask for the meet up address and everything seemed fine, he paid and showed me his payment reciept. Prior to paying i asked him to send the money to my opay account, but he said he preferred a commercial and I just assumed it was for security purposes. Now, after not seeing the alert I tried contacting him only to be hearing that the number does not exist. I tried sending a message via normal text, watsapp, and jiji bit he has not responded to any. I have still not gotten the money, I have contacted jiji and they are saying the only thing they can do is block his account on there and that I should report the case to the police. But knowing our country going to the police is basically pointless especially when the only information I have on this guy is a number that is not even going through. Please I need advice on what I could possibly do now.

Contact your bank first before thinking you've been scammed. Network these days can be very poor. Also pray for resolution. I understand how you must be feeling now. Good luck.

Boom Dig_It!!!

You gave the phone without seeing alert, you also left a trusted wallet app you have.

It's painful, kindly learn your lesson and move on.

The scammer will request for a commercial bank account, so that he can send you a fake transfer alert. He knows fake alerts doesn't work with OPAY account and app. You've been scammed Big time

Lol. You really believe that? Most criminals enjoy peace of mind, it is the amateurs with some conscience that may not. The only thing once can do is to let it go for your own peace of mind.

You shouldn't have given him the phone without getting the confirmation in your bank app (not just SMS alert. But I'm sure you already know that now.
Also sure that if you check the receipt properly, you'll see some features that could have alerted you on time to a possible fraud.
But that's life sha, consider it a paid lesson.
Hope the money is not too big

Of course they prefer commerical banks because they have ready made templates designed. They would send you the screenshot on WhatsApp.

This trick has been played on someone I know. The buyer sent someone to pick the phone for him. The "someone" presumably came from very far away and was in a rush to collect the phone so he can start his journey back home.

The scammer buyer said he has transferred the money and sent screenshots. I told my friend to go and withdraw from POS and confirm the deposit has actually reflected but it hadn't.

Can you believe both buyer and seller were in a stalemate for over 3 hours at the meetup point? He said she can't leave as he has paid, she said she hasn't seen the deposit in her account and can't drop the phone. He sent another alert saying it's possible the bank has issues and when she sees the extra money, she should refund him.

Too many psychological tricks being played. He expected she would give him the phone so she won't keep him waiting. If not for my insistence she would have dropped that phone.

He eventually left without the phone and upon closer scrutiny of the debit alert he sent, I spotted several typographical errors.

Omooorrrrr. U really tried. I'm sure I will fall for this one especially when the guy sent another fake alert. That would have been enough to win my trust.
One need to be patient when dealing with people like this because their major trick against onces defence is urgency.

This is the method that was used to scam me too -- the only time, and it was also in 2019 December; mine was 24th. 84k in 2019 money. Police I knew still asked me to bring money! Never again. I must see the money in my account first. I avoid long, winding stories from people I don't know. That's why many of them hate me because I can't be conned again.

I started out being charitable to people when I began my business. Small by small Nigerian people abused everything so tay I am now guarded and they're pissed off. Even so-called escrow on nairaland here, I no gree. If you can't come buy item in person, send money and I will send item. If you no fit, my dya brother, GO ELSEWHERE. I no dey beg for chicken change sale. Those who gree always got their item. Thank God no traffic accident ever -- which would have been a tricky situation because I have sent item but buyer didn't get it. Who to blame?

I'm tired of living in a country where I have to be looking over my shoulder because everyone believes they're "smart". Tomorrow someone will be telling me beware of seller. It is not seller or buyer; it is Nigerian tendency for criminality
