The independence constitution subscribed to by the founding fathers of Nigeria said states should be created according to demand after a referendum. They never envisaged that the military will be creating states via decrees which started with General Yakubu Gowon and Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The natural delineation of Yoruba land is into traditional states that have existed and defended their land for centuries before colonization but instead we have invalid states created by the military with names of rivers and etc and one bearing a non Yoruba name. If left to the land owners, the states existing would include Ijesa, Ijebu, Ibadan, Ilorin, Egba which was independent until 1914 and tens of others. It would not matter that one state is several times the population of another as people will align with the primordial sentiments and interests of their ancestors. In conclusion, the military way is not the right way to create states as you can not wish away ancient alignments.

The creation of states was correct and popular but wrong to be done without a referendum. It was a bad precedent. Also the control of resources by either state or federal is still non private control. It is thesame thing and will result in same issues if not well managed. Norway the best managed oil rich nation does not have resource control.

If this is what the original constitution says I wonder what the fake constitution says about the creation of states.
