Fact of the matter is that traders are increasing prices arbitrarily and causing relentless inflation due to ignorance. Yes transport and labor costs has increased but production and transportation is being done in bulk so economy of scale should kick in as the cost is spread over multiple units of the products.
People are just too greedy.
But people were not greedy just a year ago abi?

Nice but is this taking effect?. Have you done market survey to actually confirm if the production company actually do this because by the time their suppliers get them to shops in the street items are already high. Some those items mostly fast consumable goods the sellers usually make their gains in less than N100 by dozen or so,.their profit is combination of these amounts from different goods.

If I can buy from ShopRite at -N5 and +N5 at street and you don't live close to ShopRite won't you consider street when compared to stress and transport of getting to ShopRite.

Besides do we have majority of fmcg being sold in supper market at far affordable prices compared to finally seller in street.(, remember also cost of item transportation getting to location sef from production to distributor to retailer etc and police and law enforcement egunje in-between

[quote author=MasterJayJay post=131477265]The Oba should order that petrol should not be sold above 200 naira per liter.

Petrol price can be high, but if consumables can be easily affordable by the common man, then it's okay.

The Oba is doing the job of the government, food security is a necessity as it's only an hungry man that would be protesting against the government.

Some things are expensive in developed countries but not food that the common man will eat

Good. You would even hear the story of how those Traders associations are threatening those who are selling below their own prices in the market never to come to their market again

As a damned illiterate that you are, your comment on the subject matter is expository. Your economic illiterate Oba doesn't understand a thing about demand and supply and how markets forces impact on food production and service distribution.

He woke up one morning and implemented a Draconian policy that lacks economic sustainability.

Tell that foolish Oba to go to the farm, produce his own crops and sell to consumers are reduced price. By the time he factors costs of production and distribution of services with his reduced market price template, then he would know what people are going through.

They could just move to the next village where the ban does not extend to. The people from the affected village will be forced to pay transport (hence paying more) to the unaffected village and buy at the going rate.
If followed up, that could lead to those traders losing their spaces in the market and if the Oba is influential enough, he would get the big pockets of the domain to fund a special program where they buy in bulk from the farmers and sell directly in the market at the controlled prices.

It will only backfire on the traders if they try to act funny.

I am aware of the huge profit margins up to three times the cost of items these people make (inclusive of transport costs). Before, when things were not this hard, it could have been overlooked but not now.

The effect of this Oba's actions will be badly felt on the populace . Most of the farmers would rather take their goods to the neighboring states to make good profits.
This is penny wise pound foolish grin

This kabiesi has done well by cancel the traders association and cut off the middle men that inflate the prices, but at the same time this action cannot solve the problem.. Nigeria government has shoulder the responsibility and do the needful... it's good that kings in area has intervene because there some greedy market traders

Can someone please kindly inform kabiyesi that while its good that he has banned middle men who inflate prices, he has not exactly ordered that fertiliser be sold at uninflated prices, nor has he placed any control on land prices and labour and transport costs that contribute to the price of food in the market. And that if the prices he has ordered mean I sell at a loss, there are other markets where i can take my food to sell at a profit.
That directives is for local farmers and resellers, so take your produce to another market and stop unnecessary influence in the market

You and that someone ought to inform the Government to ensure all your recommendations are looked into because they are beyond his jurisdiction.

Kabiyesi has started from somewhere which is addressing the traders and markets unions under his jurisdiction. Let's commend him for that. A lot of Nigerian problems don't have a one-solution, one-man, one-committee, one time fix. Everyone should adopt the attitude doing what they should at their end of the value chain then you will see positive results being achieved consistently.

Just imagine if his efforts got complemented by the State and Federal Ministry of Agriculture, by the Governor and the State Executive Council, the Police and the rest of the Security Forces who are to prevent farm attacks, vandalization and ensure security of farmers and other Agro-allied investors etc. Just imagine everyone swung into action and sustained progressive productive efforts for just 3 months? Won't you see positive change?!

Only one man can't do it. That king has started by leading well, let others follow especially the actual governmental policy formulators and implementers in commerce, economy and agriculture.

Most market sellers are evil. They over inflated prices. They formed association to further cause more hardship cos they want to make huge profit. Kudos to the monarch. This moves looks good on the surface but the way to rid the market of greedy middlemen is not like this. It is better to increase production and encourage competitive middlemen to enter the business.

You are not knowledgeable about how farm product been sold in market. In most market where farmer come to sell theist product. You as a farmer cannot sell directly to buyer, you cannot even negotiate with willing buyer. There is always like an association of middle man in market. They are the one that will tell you how much u will sell it and they are the one that buyer can negotiate with. You may bring a palm oil and they will tell you is ₦20,000 per 25litre and they will be selling in your presence at ₦25,000 per liter. Even this type of system is still been practice in Abuja. I remember when I go to farmer market to go and bug 100tubers of yam. This are the association the Oba is trying to cancel and it good

Or simply reduce the size and quantity of the food stuff. I used to rate these SW people for real. Thank God for Tinubu.

BTW his so called banning of trader unions goes against freedom of association, and even if it doesn't, he has no official right in his capacity as mere oba, to either issue such, or enforce it.

To me these States Government should be blame for most of these mess happening in the country. They don't see themselves as people who have role to play

You don't have right to force Producers of food how much to sell. Because that will bring advanced hunger. Those people and others that have this will refuse to produce next time. Instead why not grow large hectares of food in your domain as oba? Then sell
You are talking on something you don’t have experience of. You as a farmer cannot take your goods to market and sell to buyer. You have to sell with the middle man association in market who will now be the one to sell to buyer at higher price. This practice is common in the west and I have seen it in farmer market at Abuja too. U will be surprise that the price the king quote is more than what the farmer are force to sell to the middle man

Zero economic sense, they will end of creating a black market in the community or worsen the scarcity.

Solution to cheap food is surplus production, anything else is a communist approach. Will they force the transporters to also reduce the cost of transporting the food to the community? Will they force the farmers to sell at a discount?
Will they force the fertile and farm implement sellers to sell at a discount to the farmers?
I think you have not visit market before to buy farm produce. Farmer can’t sell discreetly to buyer. The middle man in market will force the farmer to sell at low price to them and they will raise the price. Secondly, there is nothing like food shortage in Nigeria. Is there any food that is scarce in Nigeria?

The farmers have no problems with what Kabuyesi said. It is those who prevent the farmers from having access to the the consumers that Kabuyesi has just dismantled. Next time don't try to change the narrative

Fact of the matter is that traders are increasing prices arbitrarily and causing relentless inflation due to ignorance. Yes transport and labor costs has increased but production and transportation is being done in bulk so economy of scale should kick in as the cost is spread over multiple units of the products.

Your Oba must be smoking something not good for him. He has zero power on this.
Even the state government has no power to fix prices.
