You can say ANYTHING about this Oba BUT this is probably the first time any King has stepped in before this..... Instead, most of them are more concerned about being nuisances in their domain, marrying different Wives and Land grabbing . I have always felt that Kings should be more involved in their Kingdom's economic activities. |

Babalegba:I am afraid we're not getting this inflation issue right . Now, let's take an objective view/ consideration: A famer, peasant in that matter, takes her wares to the market. Note, she can only produce few items and will need to depend on them to get others. Say, garri, and she's able to produce 5 paints for the week. Now after selling, she won't just tie the money back home but will have to buy other things such as rice, fish, salt, seasonings, beans, yam, for the week. To produce the garri she has incurred expenses such as grating, firewood, and labour, even transport to the market. Now if you were to be the farmer, what will you do? |

People never want good news at all, most especially those people from other side of the country....Is Ekiti State your state? Moreover, most of those food items the king made mention are locally produced in Ekiti State and it's environs. Beg your Igwe to follow the suit |

Babalegba:My brother you and your kabiyesi have no Idea what is going on, I was into poultry and fish farming before but now I and some friends I know have closed up due to high cost of feeds. And somehow, you want the ones who manages to stay afloat to sell to you at a loss? How are they going to buy the feeds or start again after selling their stocks? If things are right and foodstuffs are everywhere, things will automatically come down else they will perish. |

Olamila:Most peeps on here commenting dont know how unions operate, if you get your produce as a business man from sources directly after including transport and other logistics by the time you as a God fearing person decide to sell at the best possible price ( which will be cheaper than others at the same market) putting in mind your profit ( which you feel you are ok by ) and the interest of the buyers ( which you feel they can afford ) its these unions and associations that will sabotage your efforts and make sure they run you out of town. E.g do you know vulcanizers have a union and they make sure no one pumps or repairs tyres cheaper whereas the average vulcanizer can pump fr 100 naira so as to get more customers which equals more profits but union no go gree.. |

budaatum:While the government from the central is subsidising the above you mentioned( fertilizer), giving grants in land & money and trying to implement cng buses for cheaper transport the state should also curtail the unions cos all these govt policies will amount to nothing as it will only benefit the same unions so this is a massive step in making commodities cheaper. E.g do you know vulcanizers have a union and they make sure no one pumps or repairs tyres cheaper whereas the average vulcanizer can pump fr 100 naira so as to get more customers which equals more profits but union no go gree same way it applies to all other commodities. |

Babalegba:Well said the person you replied obviously doesnt know how unions work. There is union for agbo sellers imagine the audacity they tell those selling agbo when to increase price as it is synonymous with increase in union dues which is the same with every other commodity and the ones who dare sell at cheaper prices cos they arent greedy will be arrested and fined by the union. |

Babalegba:God will bless you for this! Some educated illiterates are busy bashing the Oba for what he did in the interest of the populace...and these same people will be blaming the government for food inflation. Smh! |

Oba thinks we operate in the 12th century where all power belongs to them so to say but u cant tell a farmer to sell below cost of production and u can't control price beyond a certain level when it has been moved from place to place are you favouring from farm to household not very effective except the farmer's leave the farm an come to the market to open shop so they can display their goods...can lead to wastage if not properly planned. |
| Re: Ekiti Oba Slashes Food Prices, Bans Traders’ Associations by yemre: 1:33pm On Aug 13, 2024 |
Earthquakes:...and you must be a member of an association to do your poultry business? Nobody is asking you to produce at a loss but be reasonable and sell at a price profitable to you...not just because of one association that has given you an instruction to arm-twist people in the name of business. To me, what the Oba has done is appropriate. |

budaatum:Not disputing your submission, but many traders have factored all these variables in their cost of business and still believe they will make profits without selling their foodstuff at exorbitant prices. Yet those useless associations still insist on dictating price of food. I was at the bus stop some weeks ago and there was a crowd waiting for buses. A bus came around and wanted to carry passengers for #200. Immediately one of those transport union members told him the price is #500! or he leaves the park. He had to succumb to their threats and fix his price at that amount. Is that not wickedness? Recently, A trader in Kwara state wanted to sell a paint of garri for #800, and she was immediately reported to the market association and eventually forced to increase the price. Is that not wickedness? The Ooni recently banned food traders association in Ife and the prices of food drastically dropped in that region. Let people sell their food product at whatever price they feel is convenient for them. Thats my opinion. |

Blitzking:If the Oba cannot control the price, the market association too should not dictate the price. People should be free to sell at whatever price is convenient for them. |

budaatum: Babalegba:@babalegba you have rightly responded to budaatum. Middlemen are the bane of pricing and they have the power to swing prices out of greed just as you said. I remember someone telling me that they see young people going into the hinterland farms to buy farm proceed from farmers at ridiculous prices and bringing into the city to sell with a huge margin. The farmers found out and subsequently stopped selling to them and found a way to get the products to the market. It was an eye opener for them because they realized they could also make money for their effort. |
