You don't readi swear, the famers might bring pepper at 10k per bag will the association will decide to sell at 40k, he is breaking that middle man chain allowing farmers direct access to the market, same thing wrong with the Nigerian oil sector marketers fix the prices
When I served in the north one thing I discovered was that when it's harvest season marketers would mop this products and store which would lead to temporary scarcity which will lead to increase in price, cool business with little work, na money no make me enter the business

Fact of the matter is that traders are increasing prices arbitrarily and causing relentless inflation due to ignorance. Yes transport and labor costs has increased but production and transportation is being done in bulk so economy of scale should kick in as the cost is spread over multiple units of the products.
People are just too greedy.
no one can increase price arbitrarily
The market forces will force it to equilibrium

Market unions has done more harm than good

Market union was created to cater for the welfare of the traders but now it has turned an organization to suffer fellow citizens and they fix exorbitant prices on goods u can actually get cheap just bcuz they need money to loot in the organization
what is stopping fellow citizens from forming their own union and go and plant, transport the food their self?

At least the Oba has the interests of his subjects at heart and is taking measures, no matter how small they may be.
that is a stupid measure that will drive prices upward

I'm going to limit my response to only you since you've expressed the the predominant support for Kabiyesi's price fix.

You see, before Kabiyesi fixed the price of the crops I planted, Kabiyesi failed to fix the rain that I needed to grow the crops, and those crops, which I borrowed money that Kabiyesi failed to fix the interest of to plant, are now withering in the heat and are dying. And the little if any at all I can salvage from what I planted must now be sold to pay for the land and the labour and the loan plus the interest with some left over to feed me too.

Can you perhaps now see why Kabiyesi's market might not be the market for me?

Please see here that Kabiyesi did not first fix the rain.

Go and tell your king to do that.
Re: Ekiti Oba Slashes Food Prices, Bans Traders’ Associations by newoffer: 3:37pm On Aug 13, 2024
Market union before criminals ventured into tolls and tax collections which resulted to high price of goods. Consumers are not buying again now they are reducing prices. Where on earth do you buy perishable goods at exorbitant prices. Only in Nigeria because some wicked souls love to tax their mothers on everything. Work no . Do your own business no. Only to tax people like we are in 500BC.

Imagine petty traders whose goods are not worth 20 dollars are forced to join association. Road side hawkers. Association ofo. Just to enrich themselves. They ensure the market women sell at their own rates. quote author=starz100 post=131487202]This is very commendable from the Oba.Those traders association are something else.Government should throw their weight behind this[/quote]

Zero economic sense, they will end of creating a black market in the community or worsen the scarcity.

Solution to cheap food is surplus production, anything else is a communist approach. Will they force the transporters to also reduce the cost of transporting the food to the community? Will they force the farmers to sell at a discount?
Will they force the fertilizer and farm implement sellers to sell at a discount to the farmers?
so why do you complain when pump price of petrol goes up?

Can someone please kindly inform kabiyesi that while its good that he has banned middle men who inflate prices, he has not exactly ordered that fertiliser be sold at uninflated prices, nor has he placed any control on land prices and labour and transport costs that contribute to the price of food in the market. And that if the prices he has ordered mean I sell at a loss, there are other markets where i can take my food to sell at a profit.

Na Ooni of Ife first do this thing but I love how other Obas are now doing the same. It will really help their people.

Imagine, "Association of Garri Sellers" increasing the price of Garri to any amount they like because of their own greedy profit. This is good!!

I don't know the authority in charge of the petroleum sellers too, because that is where the major problem started from. PMS sellers should have same price. NNPC selling 580 here, another selling 690, and one is selling at 910 in same city without being checked huh
is this not the free market you wanted? anyone is free to buy and sell at any price. If you cannot pay 910 for fuel go and buy a cheaper one.

I agree. Now, we just need to understand that there is or there should be a free market in wages too, and tell government to go suck their 70k minimum wage. Especially now they've increased the judiciary's by 300%.

You got it! I had the exact conversation with a friend few hours ago. Wages have to keep up with prices to stop all this drama we get when there are price changes.

The sad part of this is, every single person gets to a point where they can not afford what they could get easily in the past. That's the part of this shitshow economists don't tell you. You find out when it's too late.

And then you start asking for subsidy/support. Meanwhile another group that can afford it sees you as lazy and entitled. But the cycle continues

The different is "govt"

That difference separates capitalism from communism/socialism.

No body protests if indomite increases it's price because it's a private business, if you don't like it go and buy another product

I had over 20 mentions telling me off for not being pleased that Kabiyesi fixed my wages for growing my crops.

I would have told them all to go read the very wonderful Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead, but I don't want to introduce them to the obnoxious (my opinion) Ayn Rand. It might make them understand that Kabiyesi does not own all the markets I can take my crops to go sell.

You don't want market union to fix prices but you are fixing prices grin

Allow forces of supply and demand to fix prices of foods and services, if you want to remove the excesses of the trade union do that but to start fixing prices when you aren't even a player in the demand d and supply value chain.

What happens to cultivating those essential products and flooding he market with it rather than fix prices that won't allow growers to make profit for their products?

Didn't u see the post of someone in ekiti talking about the CNG cars and buses that has made the price of transportation reduce? He said he went to the market to get some goods and used one of the CNG"s cars to transport it which cost him 50% lesser to what it use to be since the increment in fuel price. I read it here in a thread some days back7

No body should talk about fuel and transportation here because the traders them self are doing this on purpose.
For example, a bag pure water is 350 but they are still selling 50 for one, is that not a character of corruption
ekiti people like inflating price, they will now be saying cost of transport. Imagine a bag of pure water for #500.
