Without the nukes Russia are not all that much of a threat. In ww2 Hitler's Germany were on the way to smash Russia , they captured Many important Soviet territories and captured and killed 3.5 million Russians. The Nazi pushed into Moscow and where close to conquest but Russia held on and began a war of attrition with hope to stalemate Germany until the Russian winter arrives. Without that winter Russia would have fallen, because Germany got really close about 8km off Moscow. The winter blizzard was so severe that Wehrmacht couldn't advance due to heavy snow and it also affected the Luftwaffe from conducting proper air raids and bombings. The battle was so costly for both sides especially for Germany whose logistics took a major hit and this led to the collapse of the eastern frontline advancement and subsequent Nazi defeat in the war.

Ukraine is making a big mistake and will regret it.

Attacking a weaker part of Russia to score cheap points will only justify Russia when they change their approach to the war and go for all out war against Ukraine.

Those Russians who were sympathetic to Ukraine will now feal aggrieved, and more nations will openly support Russia.

Ukraine allies have been skeptical about the wisdom in this adventure.

Believe it or not Russia will lock the invading soldiers in, and clear them.

But the Nazi advance have already taken out Ukrainian territory in the first initial attack , capturing and killing about 3 million POW and 1 million civilians. Germany advanced towards Moscow and were 8 km away, Stalin had only 90,000 men to defend Moscow. If the blizzard had not slowed down the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe Moscow (Russia itself) would have fallen, it was the halting of the advance that gave Stalin the time to send reinforcement of Siberian troops from the eastern frontline to bolster the 90,000 and set up defence lines and formation. By the time Germany resumed attack, Moscow now has 500,000 men defending it. But although Germany captured the bridge over Moscow -volga canal they couldn't make any headway because the weather was already too severe and logistics was now a major problem.

NATO was going to expand next door to Russia and there was already a signed agreement that Ukraine will never join NATO. NATO and Ukraine broke the agreement hence the invasion by Russia to prevent that. Imagine America hosting nuclear weapons next to your country, or imagine Israel next door to you.

Israel is my kith and kin. Addedly there is inbuilt into every agreement a right to resile upon certain conditions. It would be slavish for an agreement to be for all time. In politics just as it obtains in personal relationships you should be at liberty decide who you want for a friend. nah. US failed in Afghanistan. Just as they failed in Vietnam, Korea etc the most recent is the Syria civil war where the Russian backed Assad's govt crushed US govt backed rebels. US would've nuked Ukraine by now if they were the one besieged by NATO forces using Ukraine as cannon fodder but Russia is winning conventionally and even growing its economy and expanding its influence while US economy is enduring inflation.

the main reason why this war has dragged long is because the current set of Western politicians are deep pacifists who would rather drip-feed the Ukraine with the hope of not escalating, rather than fight to achieve outright victory like their fathers before.
