Broke law? Oh no. All I see is business transactions between neighbors.

And those people, are they not Nigerians? Did they steal the product or buy with their own money?

You kept saying Nigerians suffering but people are being smart enough to use their money to make more money for themselves.
if you say that I " kept saying Nigerians suffering", how come you said this?

That's where the smart ones find wealth, from the suffering of others.
yet I still ask How is taking advantage of the suffering of Nigerians and breaking the law to enrich yourself being smart?

who are the neighbours that you see a business transaction between?

how did they buy the product you say they bought?

where are they selling the product?

how are they getting the product they are selling to where they are selling it?

You almost sound smart with this your take. But you fail to acknowledge the inherent corruption in all government institutions that have continuously weakened any development efforts. If the security agencies did their job, we wouldnt be here. If the management of the NNPC were transparent, we wont be here.

We are here because we are greedy and unthinking. It is 2024, and there a ton of ways to track every drop of fuel that passes through Nigerias ports, but here we are. Corruption is institutionalized and propagated by the same people who are suppose to ensure Nigeria works for us all.

Again, Nigeria [as is it is currently structured and led] will never be great. This contraption needs to be aborted at the earliest opportunity, and the womb rid of all contaminants.

What business do we have running a democratic system of Government?
nairalanda1:
cheesy

It is simple.

1. Fuel costs below N1000 here

2. Fuel costs above N1000 over there. Even in NIger, with the recent reduction, fuel costs N1400 per liter

3. Naturally, smuggling would result. And let's be honest, it is not only big people doing it, even the small ordinary Nigerian would carry a 50 liter jerrycan of fuel across the border, and sell it, and come back with a big enough profit to bribe customs, and still have enough left over.

4. We don't have fuel, because government is struggling to pay the subsidy on fuel. Right now we owe fuel exporters lots of money, we are struggling to even pay the NNPC shortfall, and NNPC is now raiding the dividends to pay off its own shortfall.

5. And yet, Nigerians keep asking for cheap fuel

It is our desire to have N40 fuel that is causing this, people. And it is high time we woke up and realized fuel cannot be cheap, and totally removed subsidy.

Yet, anyone suggesting this now is apparently agbado, even if they have never voted for tinubu or never liked the man (I have not liked tinubu since 2005, when Gani first raised the questions about his certificate then)....

But it is obvious subsidy, even at tinubu level is not sustainable.

The only way to stop smuggling is to TOTALLY REMOVE SUBSIDES. Yes, fuel would cost N1500 per liter, and yes, Agbado people brought hardship to NIgeria, and yes NIgeria needs to divide, and bla bla bla

But you cannot sell at a loss and not expect issues.

And if you think NIgeria is the only country with this issue....

1. LIbya has a severe smuggling problem, to the point that smuggliers are being bombed by the LIbyan air force

2. Saudi has a smuggling problem with Yemen, which they are finding hard to fight

3. Iran has issues on the border with Pakistan. Iranian fuel is being smuggled into Pakistan well well. Subaisy

4. Venezuela has a massive smuggling problem. Same thing happening here. They lost 18 bn dollars to smuggling one year.

See the benefits of subsidy

Yet somehow, we want something that costs over N1000 to make to be sold at N200 or less because 'poverty'

We better wake up folks.

AutoManual:
The naira lost value significantly in the last 9 years.

100 naira was 350 cifa before buhari came.
100 naira was 150 cifa before tinubu came on board.

But today 100 cifa is 260 naira.

Naira is falling to all currency. Among the 3 worst currency in the world.

Even if PMS is sold for 2000 naira today, as far as the naira keep plummeting to the abyss PMS will still be cheaper in Nigeria compared neighboring countries while the people moves to multi dimension poverty.

Robert Mugabe is far better than buhari and tinubu combined.

Even if we open the Southern border today it would cost more to import from neighboring countries unlike in the past.

The table has turned now. It's the neighboring countries now importing cheap food from Nigeria while the Nigerian citizen suffered in hardship.
So the major, major problem is insecurity. If people are allowed to farm, then it is a good omen for neighbouring countries to import food from Nigeria. Besides, their will be a reduction in unemployment and we will be able to feed ourselves.

Believe their usual lies at your own risk. All the countries mentioned also import petrol and they're also not paying subsidy in their countries. As a matter of fact, Niger has a refinery serving their people actively.

Why would they now buy smuggled fuel from Nigeria who also goes to same source to import fuel as them? They once claimed fuel scarcity during the era of subsidy payment was as a result of the smugglers activities at the borders cos Nigerians sold subsidized petrol to those countries across the borders.

You must have read here a few days ago when the NNPC claimed the reason for scarcity and the return of long queues were as a result of rain and thunderstorm grin that was the first time in my life I'd hear such a fat lie. Please don't join people who are being fooled by their lies. Nigerians should be wiser. This administration has failed woefully. Tomorrow, they'd blame another thing for the continued scarcity.

All true, but at the end, we still have to remove subsidy.

We have put this off long enough. IN 2012, WE COULD Have done it, painlessly, but people said NO, using the arguments you used. And here we are.

is removal of fuel subsidy the solution to all nigeria's problems?

It has also cost us 4 refineries, cost us lost billions in theft, looting smuggling, and so on, created large budget deficits that contribute to the debt, and made NIgeria the dumping ground for low grade fuels from all over the world, and cost us billions if not trillions in import costs for fuel...because no one is going to refine fuel and compete against cheap government fuel...it would make him lose money

I mean right now, if I had a refinery, and sold fuel from there at N1200 and above, how can I compete with imported subsidised fuel at N700 and below, even at N900. I WOULD Lose, and the refienry would close.

See the issue?
how did fuel subsidy cost nigeria four refineries?

if fuel subsidy cost nigeria 4 refineries, how come the government still spends billions every year maintaining the refineries?

how is fuel subsidy responsible for "theft, looting smuggling, and so on, created large budget deficits"?

are you saying that there is no "theft, looting smuggling, and so on" in any other sector of government in nigeria?

is fuel subsidy responsible for crude oil theft?

is it because of fuel subsidy that various levels of government borrow and have nothing to show for these loans?

since Dangote refinery is up and running, how come nigeria is still a dumping ground for "low grade fuels from all over the world"?

Very few understand your reasoning. I told someone if I was the President, I will stop all form of subsidy. Tinubu has been able to stop FX subsidy totally, remains fuel and electricity.
nairalanda1:
SO, government should spend over N1000 per liter so that you can have fuel at N40 per liter then?

The issue is, your government is not able to keep up the subsidy, and is going into debt keeping fuel at N700 and below.

For me it is kind of choose your poision.

1. Keep subsidy, even reduce prices to N200 or less per liter, and the resulting deficit eats our forex earnings, and drives us into debt and penilessness until Sri Lanka level is attained.

2. Remove subsidy, yes hyperinflation for some time, but we eventually get more domestic refining, more investment, and could even become an exporter of refined products, meaning our economy benefits (We won't have a good economy...until we industrialize and become an exporter of manufactured goods and services tho...that's another discussion).

2 IS the least worst option.

NO one likes subsidy removal...but for donkey years we have subsidised fuel...and electricity, and at the end, we have gotten nothing out of it. TIme to try something new. We have been warned about this since 1993, and especially in 2012, when we had the last chance to remove subsidy painlessly.

its because I understood your comment, hence my rebuttal which is as follows.

pls take note of the highlighted:

all these years, we have been told that the justification for fuel price increase is to discourage smuggling to neighbouring countries.

After all the price increases under the guise of removing subsidy, how come smuggling of fuel to neighbouring countries is still taking place?

do you have any record of smuggling stopping overnight?

how are petroleum products smuggled out of nigeria to neighbouring countries?

when did price of fuel drop after it first to N560-N600?

what price did it drop to?

how much is fuel selling now?

who are the "we" you are referring to?

is it removal of fuel subsidy that stops smuggling?

where in the world is fuel subsidy the reason why smuggling is successful?

do you think developed countries dont give subsidies?

what is the result of the subsidies removed so far?

tinubu, his vice, their wives and children, members of the national assembly, governors and their state legislators enjoy free food, free transportation, free accommodation, free security, free fuel, free internet, free electricity, free healthcare, free phone calls, free clothing all at home and abroad.
