Blue states have cities with large populations so their GDP will be most likely higher than one with a relatively lower population.

Of course California probably has the highest amount of probably everything as they have the largest population by far. ~2x the population of Florida.
The stat you are looking for is the welfare recipients per State population. That metric actually helps you differentiate between large states and small states.

I've included the relevant statistic from US News and World Report. 4 out of 5 of the states that have the greatest percentage of SNAP recipients are Republican States.
