It is well. The people of Benin Republic, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, Niger Republic, Burkina Faso and several others have been buying fuel at the rate that Nigerians are just getting used to. They are not dead, they are not in hell. We are going to be fine. We should be tired of 64 years with no clear direction, we had several decades of subsidized fuel with nothing to show. Something has to give.
craze Dey worry you. So Nigeria has direction now after removal of subsidy abi?

No matter how you people try to paint it, I can smell a ronu miscreant when he wails subtly. You tried to sound intelligent not knowing that a discerning mind could easily smell you people out. Tinubu is now president and all of a sudden, you people are beginning to sound logical. Ndi ara. Getat abeg, you think I too have time for your hypocrisy. Mtchew
No ronu is ever intelligent.

All they do is to spill what they have been told in their WhatsApp class.

Very dull set of people, like their emilokan.

When you read their write-up , you’ll be wondering if they think through their anus.

the problem wasn't the subsidy but the skyrocketing population making it hard for the subsidy to be feasible. Even if somehow we found a creditor and subsidy remains for like 20 years more, with this current birth rate each Nigerian would be asked to either donate or be forced to pay n a worse case scenario
That is the more reason the subsidy has to go: Nigeria is too populated ad very diverse across ethnic and religious lines.

You don't understand what you're writing. I am a fully qualified economist (graduated top of my class in one of Nigeria's most prestigious universities) no bragging...

If you're saying they shouldn't pay the new minimum wage (while earning in USD) and also not pay subsidy, then what template are you proposing to keep Nigerians alive? You do understand that the essence of the minimum wage is to prevent worker's exploitation and that Nigeria's (new) minimum wage still remains one of the lowest in Africa right?
Please mention the name of the school and what grade (CGPA) you graduated from and with?

Tinubu took two economically-important decisions simultaneously, without fully understanding the macroeconomic by-effects. If he had removed subsidy and kept the Naira value (controlled) or devalue the Naira and keep paying subsidy (which could be gradually removed, coupled with strong economic reforms), it would have been a good idea...
I doubt your credentials if not you would have understood that controlling the value of a currency is a bad thing to do especially for an unproductive economy like ours. Subsidy has to go, no ifs or buts. Tinubu is at fault because he kicked against the same plan enacted by Jonathan. The reason I am glad he is going all these travails. Karma is well deserved!

n 2023 he had no choice but to devalue and stop the subsidy. ALL the other candidates would have had to do EXACTLY the same thing.

The real opportunity lost was in January 2012.

Good Luck to Nigeria
This is what they have consistently refused to acknowledge. It is a reason I doubt the intelligence of Nigerian men and Nigerians in general. I am always wary and dismissive when I hear the phrase "Nigerians are intelligent people". That is a lie that has gone too far.

The refineries will NEVER produce as long as they're owned by government.

No, you can't fix your refineries just like you can't fix federal universities and Ajaokuta Steel and National Stadium or NTA or NIPOST.

Impossible. Because nothing owned by government ever works in ANY country!!!

Good Luck to Nigeria
I beg to disagree. Singaporean Airlines is majority owned by the Singaporean government, just as Ethiopian Airlines is owned by the Ethiopian government. Both are largely homogenous countries with a dominant racial/ethnic group. In Singapore's case, Chinese Singaporeans are way more intelligent than every single Nigerian (including myself). Nigerians are too incompetent to run a functioning society!

The country should be sold off to East Asians for effective management. Nigerian men don't have the mental capacity to run a functioning society. Having long preek doesn't translate to wide grey matter. We just don't have it and we should acknowledge it.

Are These countries you mentioned oil producing countries?

Remember, Nigeria is the sixth largest oil producing nation in the entire world
Nigeria is too populated to run a subsidy, not necessarily because it is an oil-producing nation. Petrol prices are not subsidised in the US - a top three oil producer ditto Canada. Before you mention Saudi Arabia, please note that it is racially and religiously homogenous and a thriving monarchy.

Cheer up, mate. You're a good fellow.

Nigeria is a hopeless case but there's always potential that what will be will be and we must always identify with that possibility.

We can learn. Or we might learn. This was an eventful weekend, let's see what comes.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

See who's doubting someone's credentials. You couldn't even construct a grammatically sound sentence, using "if not" where it shouldn't appear & struggling with punctuations. No wonder they made IELTS compulsory for Nigerians. 🤔

Kindly show me where I exclusively mentioned in my comments that Tinubu should have kept paying subsidy. What exactly did I fault- was it the subsidy removal itself or the approach? Reading comprehension - 0 😁

Nigerians are buying petrol for over 1k per litre on a yet-to-be-implemented monthly minimum wage of N70k or 44USD, in a country where state governors couldn't pay the previous 30k minimum wage. 😛

When the poor start holding 2x2 planks and giving the politicians 'woto-woto', I hope you get your fair share of the planking cos you definitely need some factory resetting! 😁

As he and others have pointed out, you are clueless about the economy, just like Tinubu and Buhari who Obasanjo endorsed nevertheless, to help Tinubu achieve his ebilokan dream through Yorubalokan and Peter Obi’s naive assistance

If you are not clueless then you should know that the profligacy of government officials is at the root of the problems. The profligacy is endorsed by the masses who are too lazy mentally to work but want everything free from their own share of the national cake, through their tribesmen looters hailed as leaders

edet19892015:
Unless you understand your role in society, you can never make any meaningful contribution.

According to the Greeks, they are three types of people on Earth,
1. The idiots,
2. The tribesmen, and
3. The citizens.

Studies show only 10% of Africans are citizens.
The remaining 90% are either tribesmen or idiots.

1. When the Greeks used the word "Idiot", they did not use it as a curse word.
Idiots are people who just don’t care.
If they sit for exams, they will cheat.
If they are in government they will steal.

An idiot does not care at all, if he eats bananas he throws the peels anywhere instead of putting them in a trash bin.

IDIOTS won't attend monthly neighborhood meetings. They won't pay security dues. They won't contribute to community development. Even when they see or know about something that will harm others in the community they won't report it. When they see/know/have something that will benefit their community they won't share.

In fact, Idiots don't care to register for or vote in an election, yet they complain the most. If they register to vote, IDIOTS will sell their votes for peanuts.

According to the Greeks, some societies have more idiots than tribesmen and citizens.

2. The next set of people are "Tribesmen", these are people that look at everything from the point of view of their tribe.

These are people that believe in you only if you are part of their tribe.
It can be terrible to have a tribesman as a leader, he will alienate the rest.

When the Greeks talk about tribes, it’s not just about ethnicity, they also consider religion, gang membership, group membership, party membership and even cult membership as a tribe.

A great percentage of Africans are tribesmen, because they view everything from the point of view of their tribes. They trust only their tribesmen

3. The last group are "Citizens".
These are people who like to do things the right way.
They will respect traffic light rules even if no one is watching them.

They drive within speed limits.
They respect the laws, and won’t cheat in exams.
In government, they won’t steal.
They are compassionate and give to others to promote their well-being.

Citizens often promote projects that benefit everyone.
The Greeks called this group "The Citizens".

Some countries have more citizens than tribesmen and idiots, others have so many idiots.

A tribesman can become a citizen through orientation.
And an idiot can become a citizen by training and constant enforcement of the law.

But things fall apart if you elect an idiot or tribesman to lead you if he has not been reformed.

Where do you belong? Are you an idiot, a tribesman or a citizen? Reflect on your life.
Reflect about your immediate community, city, state and nation.

US may not subsidize petrol prices per say but the US subsidizes fossil fuels which is a generic term for non-renewable energy sources such as coal, coal products, natural gas, derived gas, crude oil, petroleum products and non-renewable wastes. According to IMF sources, the US spent a whopping $760 billion in 2022 on fossil fuels subsidies which is second only to China which spend $2.2 trillion in the same 2022.

Well, it is what I have always advocated for - East Asian way of doing things. With what I have learnt and seen, should I live in Nigeria, I will organise things the way the Chinese and Japanese do. What annoys me is how politicians and their highly placed supporters and friends, aka other elites, do things even after studying and living in the West. It annoys me really well. It is not like these people (East Asians) have two heads. Why do things work so seamlessly over here, but cannot over there even after many years of trial and error?

Honestly, it is annoying and sometimes heartbreaking.

our population is not productive or creative enough, the highest form of creativity exhibited in Nigeria is probably going into crime (kidnapping and fraud). All the countries mentioned above are productive

It could be suicidal for any single person to organise things the way the Chinese and Japanese do.
It might be more fruitful and sustainable to work on making everyone around us in Nigeria, understand and act om this understanding of the Asian and European good sociocultural standards. Good because not all their standards are good. A bit like how the Muslims and Christians engaged us with their knowledge until we abandoned our religious. You are doing some of that already via nairaland. Keep it up as you increase the tempo, seeking various ways and opportunities to share your impressions, perspectives and thoughts.

Living in one's dominant environment is good as the feeling is priceless. It is the very reason our men (myself inclusive) should do well to make home better. It is one feature I admire and envy about the Chinese - they made China work, and everyone is happy and proud of it, including their siblings and cousins elsewhere.

France in cahoots with the US ruined that country. France itself does not have a good history or reputation with black dominated environments. Also, Haiti is in the Americas, aka the Monroe Doctrine. Thus limiting any trade, military or scientific collaboration I will want to have with the Chinese. Nearby Gabon the Chinese provide funds for its military, and the US suddenly invited the president for what-I-don't-know.

Seriously...despite all the colonization, racism and what not, Black Africans could do better IF THEY HAVE THE ABILITY to do better.

It's not the White Man holding us back. Deep down I think you know it. Don't ruin or damage your life with hope of an African Renaissance. It won't happen. Marry a nice Japanese girl and be done with it.
