CNG: Lagos centres begin vehicle inspection for conversion

Inspection of commercial vehicles that will benefit from free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and installation has begun at Lagos centres.

The exercise is part of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi) and approved by President Bola Tinubu for provision of a cheaper and cleaner vehicle fueling alternative for Nigerians.

At the inspection on Saturday, Mr Olayinka Rufai, PCNGi Special Project Adviser, said that the inspection went well.

He said that most of the vehicles inspected were eligible for conversion.

According to Rufai, the conversion incentive programme is supposed to take, in its first tranch, about 10,000 vehicles.

He added that 1,000 vehicles would be pushed out within days nationwide on first-come-first-service basis.

ā€œOur very ambitious goal is to convert a million vehicle by 2027. We are setting out with about 20 conversion centres nationwide, and we hope to increase the number of conversion centres.

ā€œThere are requirements – technical, physical and digital that conversion centres need to meet, before they will be accredited.

ā€œStandards, safety and quality are very important to us, and we have to ensure that wherever becomes an accredited conversion centre is a place that meets all the requirements,ā€ he said.

On availability of CNG filling stations, he encouraged private investors to help to install CNG stations across the country.

He said that commercial vehicles were mostly targeted so that they would impact on people’s disposal incomes and help to reduce amounts spent on transport.

ā€œWe will continue to stand in front of people and tell them about this initiative. This first-come-first service is supposed to be exhausted in a week,ā€ he said.

Mr Azeez Adekanmbi, Head of Technical Department of Mezovest Energy Trading Ltd., said that about 18 vehicles had been inspected.

According to Adekanmbi, Mezovest, in conjunction with PCNGi, will convert 50 commercial vehicles belonging to an aassociation such as Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers.

ā€œThe conversion has not started, what we are doing now is validation of the vehicle to certify its fitness.

ā€œWhen we are done with the 50 assigned to us, it is left for the organisers to give us the go ahead to inspect more vehicles.

ā€œOn conversion, we have the contacts of persons whose vehicles are fit for conversion, and when we get the ā€˜go ahead’ from the organisers, we will commence conversion,ā€ he said.

Mr Adeshiji Abowaba, a technician at Mezovest Energy Trading Ltd., said that in installing the cylinder, there would be need to ensure that the weight would be evenly distributed to ensure balance.

According to Abowaba, the gas tank is fire and bullet proof.

He added that the thickness of the tank was between 15mm and 20mm.

ā€œPeople are sceptical of gas but we should understand that Liquefied Petroleum Gas and CNG are not the same.

ā€œCNG is safe. Even when there is a leakage or fire, it cannot ignite because the pressure has been released to the thin air.

Woye @woye1

This is not correct. 1: Note this and you can verify from my media because I monitored all the centers in Abuja today with the National Coordinator of PCNG. For commercial drivers, it is Free of Charge.

2: check my media that I interacted with NIPCO Branch Manager too.

3: For individuals, nothing like 1.2m Whatsoever, payment dey small small. Why are our people dey mislead others like this
The picture (for private vehicles) is not uploading, but I'll keep trying till it uploads.

Re: Photos And Videos Of CNG Conversion Programme Across Nigeria by naptu2(op):
Gbenga Saka @gbengasaka

On Tuesday Sept 10th, I visited the NIPCO CNG conversion center along Airport Road in Abuja to inquire about the possibility of converting my car to CNG. To my amazement, I saw many commercial vehicles refilling their cylinders attached to the trunks of their vehicles, which prompted me to engage some of the drivers. One driver who really explained the benefits of CNG to me was a Bolt driver. He mentioned that he refills his cylinder for about 3k, which lasts him a maximum of two days. He also stated that he makes between 40 to 50k daily from his work. However, I was disappointed when he said that he still charges his passengers as if he were using PMS. He mentioned this with so much pride, as if he did nothing wrong. I noticed many Golfs and Toyota Corollas on the line to refill as well.

It’s also worth noting that the conversion for commercial vehicles is free, courtesy of the federal government, while the cost for private vehicles depends on the engine capacity. If you have a four-cylinder engine, conversion costs about 750k, while a six-cylinder conversion is nearly a million naira (900k+).

This explains why commercial vehicle owners aren’t really complaining about the hike in PMS price as much as private car owners—they have already rigged the system.
De Crownofwealth šŸ‘‘ @ibcrownofwealth

3000 Gas will not last you for 2 days except perhaps he's not driving up to 170kms a day. Cos a full Cylinder of CNG will last average of 170-180kms depending on the pressure gotten.
Gbenga Saka @gbengasaka

im glad someone can confirm that a 3k CNG cylinder will cover about 180km in a day! That's like traveling from Abuja to Lokoja. Now Imagine a bolt driver shuttling Wuse to airport which is just 30km and you are being charged 17k for the trip! it means such driver can do 3 return trips and make 51k/day on an energy consumption of 3k! let's fear God!

You get a very big issue. It's time for you to slow down and reflect about so many things

Not just photos was posted, video was also attached which means whatever the news might be about can never be fake or lie.

The said person made that comments even before the op of this thread posted a single word. Only book spaced . I also book spaced as well as I was yet to have an idea what the topic is all about

That's fixated mindset about others which don't make one to grow intellectual in life. Things you are yet to confirm but already reached conclusion
