Nigerian Army officers have served as Army chiefs in other African countries; one of the most recognised being Brigadier-General Maxwell Mitikishe Khobe who served as the Chief of the Defence Staff of Sierra Leone from 1998 to 2000.

An avid poultry farmer, Khobe served four tours of duty in Liberia getting ECOMOG Liberia medals for each one. In addition, he won the coveted Nigerian Army Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award and became a Colonel in 1994.

In recognition of his efforts, he was promoted to the Brigadier-General rank and President Kabbah appointed him Chief of Defence Staff of Sierra Leone. Brigadier-General Maxwell Mitikishe Khobe was in this position until he suddenly collapsed in April 2000.

He was evacuated back to Nigeria where he died of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) at St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos on April 18, 2000. He was 50.

Following his death and burial in his hometown of Numan, Adamawa State on April 29, 2000, the Rukuba Cantonment in Jos was renamed Maxwell Khobe Cantonment. #HistoryVille

Maxwell Khobe gallantry in Sierra Leone and Liberia will forever be remembered. My dad told me and the Internet documentaries speaks volume. A man that politely rejected a political appointed from IBB. Rest on general.

Until the emergence of boko haram, Nigeria army was considered as one of the most disciplined worldwide.

Events over the years, especially after 2009 and aided by corruption, our Nigerian military on a much lower ranking. I believe that we can do better than what we presently experience.

Nigeria's army has never been considered disciplined at any time. It was rather considered to be quite effective. Disciplined is the wrong word.

Many Nigerians may not understand the extent of Gen. Khobe's valiant efforts until they relate with Sierra Leone and Liberia, especially Sierra Leone.

Generals Khobe and Sani Abacha have streets named after them in Freetown and the City of Bo in Sierra Leone, if I'm not mistaken.

Our soldiers who fought gallantly in the Airport island of Lungi (where Gen Khobe was said to have been caught unawares), at Makeni, in Kanema, and the bloodiest ones in Freetown, would never be forgotten.

May the Almighty God rest their souls.

Hero...par excellence.A real soldier who led from the front.Remembered one of his interview with the BBC when the interviewer asked him,not many Colonel's lead their troops from the front line,that what will happen if he got shot or as he sees his men failing down around him.He said that's why he is a Soldier.He said his presence motivates his men...a real Bachaman...Adamawa hero..This is a man who got injured in battle but still returned to the battle field.Sadly,the war didn't claim his life... ironically died after the war from injuries he sustained there.A worthy HERO.

My dad was with Khobe in the Sierra Leonian war expeditions especially at the Lungi airport firefight. Man was a real war hero.

Nigeria missed these crop of generals. His looks alone would send shivers down the spine of bandits and boko haram members.

The kind of generals we have today can only boast of their pot belly and womanizing skills. Nothing more. Little wonder why the entire country is plagued with insecurity.

His son was my friend, I wonder where he is now, they were namesakes too.
