Price of single phase prepaif meter is 135k, you will also pay for KYC and installations. Getting a meter now together with Installations is high. The landlord should purchase the meter or if the tenant does, calculate total expenses then make agreement with oga landlord for you to use it as rent.
After paying the N135k, is the meter legally yours?

Lmao 😂. You guys never heard of prepaid meter unit reader? It keeps tab of your energy consumption and tells what each person should pay. 0*7*0*4*5*3*6*8*5*6 chat or call me if you need help getting, installing and tracking it to avoid cheating. Of course it's cheap and you can easily resel to next tenant or anyone.

Buy and install electricity energy check meter. It comes in single phase and multiphase. It helps you and your neighbours track your actual power consumption and pay for exactly what you consume. This is the device for you and your neighbours!

Why will you take it from the rent when you can buy your own meter, register it in your name and it becomes yours so that when you leave, you can take it with you?

@OP, there is no way to calculate how much you power you use at this point, your best bet is to go get your own meter and register it in your name. This becomes yours and you can replicate it if/when you move out. You don't even need the landlords permission for this
I stand to be corrected, but from what I've seen so far, I don't think this is possible o

Equal contributions from all tenants..

And in your case (and others who are not always around in band A areas), paying light bills when you don't always enjoy it as others because of your busy schedules. You should do one of these;

1) Look for an apartment where everyone is busy with (physical) work. A house where hardly before anyone stays at home. It will help you cut down costs.
2) Discuss with the house owner or caretaker (depends on who is in charge), about you having your own meter (they always agree especially if your explanations are reasonable enough). Then go to NEPA office, get it and have it fixed. The good thing is, it's not a waste because you will still use it when you finally build your house.

However, in all you do, please avoid renting a house where the landlord/lady dwells...
ORISIRISI.So he should avoid his landlord as much as possible while staying in his house.

prepaid meter isn't a cellphone that you carry around, its always registered to a particular house address.

So many things need clarification in this country. Another issue bothering me is concerning electricity connection. I built a house for my parent but electricity is yet to get to the area. My parents are staying there and have been managing the small solar installation.

Now while the electric pole is being gradually installed, The community CDA is asking the houses to make payment for the poles and the metal nepa cable that connects the poles before being allowed to connect their houses to the mains. The requested amount from each house is close to #300,000. So I have been wondering who owns the pole and its connecting lines. If it is NEPA, why then do we have to pay that much to connect our house?

Is it not the electricity companies' responsibility to bring their service to the area while the landlords pay for monthly services rendered?

wirinet:
This is one issue that has been bothering my mind for a few months now. Who owns the meter - The distribution companies, the landlord, or the tenant? This question came to my mind when the meter of one of my neighbour got burnt. Ikeja disco came and evacuated the meter and gave my neighbour two options - Buy a new meter at N150k or be put on estimated billing, which is about 80k a month. The landlord says he was not the one using the meter when it got burnt and so not responsible for replacing it. My neighbour asked that if he pays for the meter will he be allowed to take it if he moves to another location? Ikeja disco says no, that the meter is their property. If the meter is their property, when why collected money from customers?
NERC needs to clarify this meter issue.

How does the meter solve the problem when people can still decide how much they are willing or able to pay?

On the contrary, I think you are the one whose level of understanding and reasoning needs to be questioned

So when you go looking for a house to rent, you also start checking whether the landlord lives in the same building, and how many hours the existing tenants spend at home?

C'mon man, that's crazy

Thank you for this. I am a tenant and in sincerity, my landlord is one of the coolest being I have ever met.
Everybody goes their own way. Pump water with his diesel gen when there is black out and many others. Baba even have a farm that we harvest from in the compound freely.
My neighbour has used up to 13yrs here and this is my 5th year in his house without no issue.
The only thing is pay your house rent when it's due.

All this ppl that always look for houses with no landlords sef, their own too do cuz if they themselves are peaceful being, they should be able to tolerate living others.
The biggest thing is why will a tenant live in a house and frustrate his/her landlord because of reasons unknown and expect to have peace?
Na them Sabi.
I pray they too become a landlord one day and they will see how the table runs.
You have a good experience doesn't mean you have to negate other people's experiences. I just moved from my former apartment, and I instructed the agents not to get an apartment where the landlord resides. I saw shege at the hands of my old landlady. How will I be having issues cos I bought foodstuffs in bulk and I didn't buy petty stuffs from her. Spiritual attacks nkọ? How can you explain why tenants that came into the apartment leave at the same time after the first year rent expires.

I ran for my life.

Day dreaming,
It's not your property sir but that of the distribution company and it is attached strictly to the feeder in that area. Even if you move out with it. It will be useless to you. Involving your landlord is important because it's his property, except you can negotiate with incoming tenant upon your moving out.

you are absolutely right, some peope are generally wasteful....I know someone who finished 200 units in less than 12 days, he is requesting they put him on estimated billing .....and I'm still using mine within same period... so imagine sharing metre with such a person and he will be claiming nonsense equal bills payment...
Someone can even be staying in a one bedroom apartment and use more units than someone staying in a two bedroom apartment.

This is pure scam! This issue needs to be litigated all the way to the supreme court. Why ask people to pay for an item and yet claim the item does not belong to you? Is the money paid then a donation?

The ignorance with confidence and disrespect in this your advice is something else. Don't tell me you are that admin people are always calling up and down, cos you would expect such a person to have at least some knowledge.

1. When you buy prepaid in a particular metering zone. It is usually not movable out of that zone. (Why? I don't know)
2. When it comes to external installations in a rented home, especially one that will tamper with the house wiring, it is good to carry the landlord along.

@nlreserve

The picture below is what you and your co-tenant needs. The person that introduce me to it called it CHECKED METER. I guess the sub meter nomenclature fits perfectly.

Lets assume both of you have it installed to your respective flats, you will have an agreement to recharge maybe 100k at first , contributed equally on the prepaid meter.

Once connected, you will be able to see the unit you consumed out of the 100k you guys bought. Then you can contribute the exact amount of unit you consumed for the month. Same as your co-tenant. And to cap it all, you can go with it when relocating. It is your property.

No more headaches. You both live happily ever after.

Lol. It was the reason one man attacked NEPA officials. They cut off his light from the pole,he didn't say anything but when they rolled up the wires and wanted to cut it and take it along with them,he warned them to leave his wires for him.
They refused...the outcome was inflicting damages on the NEPA vehicle they came with.
I don't know they finally resolved the issue.

Get a digital card reader and get a qualified electrician to mount it on the cable directly taking light to your apartment. The card reader will register exactly the amount of units consumed by you accurately.
NB: Don't get the manual card reader which is cheaper cos someone can easily manipulate the figures in your absence. Get the digital one. It's not more than 15k last time I checked

Exactly! Let every tenant install a digital electric reader.
