In Lagos it is called titus.
SE calls scumbia. This is from my experience living in both regions. I used mackerel just to sound enlightened, else I tilt towards TITUS most times grin.

I have only seen 2 species in Nigeria. The fake and original. Hahaha! The fake isn't common in Lagos. You will instead see other types of everyday fish like panla (hake) and shawa (herring).
Scombridae is the correct name. We just call it scumbia grin
Mackerel is generic name.
Family is scombridae.

Is there a fake?
It's just another species of mackerel.
That one called fake.....
There are a lot to talk about those fishes.

I remember we reached many pages cos almost everybody was like I am wrong, even when I snapped a box in my freezer to show them the name. cheesy
I explain tire and ran away cheesy

12 pounds per hour wage if converted to naira is huge amount here
.
If you work for 8 hours daily , then you suppose don build mansions upon mansions in just a year
Convert to naira carry the money go market go buy the same amount of fishes it's almost the same price, but then again it's almost my one week wage, Nigeria's spending cost is the same as europe. But earning is the same with Zimbabwe, God help us ,

Yes you pay taxes..but just a little percentage of ur earnings like on that 12p.. U could pay 1.5p as tax.

Hope that is not too much
What about your house rent or you deh live for free for UK ni? Break down all these taxes make people sabi wetin deh happen. If you're a family man, house rent is between £900 to £1300, council Tax is like £150 to £200, you also pay bills for gas, electricity, water, internet.

nursing is not one of the least paid job here but the exact opposite.

NHS and care home pay different rate. Care home pays higher, as high as 20 quid per hour. How is that one of the least?
How many care homes.
More than 70% are in the hospital. Also, if you want to specialise and career oriented, you need the nhs.

Guy tax is not calculated that way else everyone go dey buy lambogini. U have tax holiday on 12000£ after that U will be taxed 20% of anymore money U make. If U have a second job U will be taxed from 40% or even 50%. If U earn more than 40000£ U pay 40% tax. I made 942£ this week tax was 180£ and NI was 70£. Take home was less than 700£. The more U earn the less U collect

It's cheaper cos it just come from neboring countries of UK.
With a day wage for some people, you can buy full goat and freeze.
Also uk make the best deals with countries as regards food by subsidising it.
Food is very cheap in uk.

I once had a colleague from Poland that said seedless grapes are cheaper in uk than her country yet uk import from them.
I don't know if that's true as I don't live there.

Abeg, just say they are different species. Which one is quality on top fish again? Make una no dey do like we done die for Nigeria.
Bro you won't understand until you taste it.

That was why I wrote that it's from experience.

Infact I so dislike mackerel cos I use to eat it in naija and I dislike the taste...

In naija we have kote and Titus and the Titus is of two types.. Onigi and olora and trust me, you don't want to taste the Onigi type.

So I always look away from it whenevr I go to fish market in UK.

But one day I chose to buy the fresh mackreal which is 2 for 5 pounds.

Bro when I tasted it I was blown away.

When I say quality I know what I meant.

The ones we eat in Nigeria has passed through a lot aswea. grin

Other things i got from another shop are a
pack of 5kg of rice that cost 8.99 pounds
Egusi 3.49 pounds
Salt 1.49 pounds
Tin tomato 1.99 pounds
Pack of start maggi 2.49 pounds

In fact a week i spend 35 pounds to buy all we need to use to prepare stew, soup (3 types of soup). Store all in fridge. ( a family of 3)

That 35 pounds is just about 3hrs wage pay.

Nigeria actually need an intervention at this stage. When i look how things are organised in UK
All road motorable with no single pot holes.
With high way everywhere, flyovers interlinking exis.
No single blink of light.
Security top notch. You can work 1am on the road covering several kilometres with no fear of being killed or robbed. You call police it takes less than 5 minutes to arrive where u are even in forest.

Then u wonder how is this posible to achieve.
stop talking as if England is safe heaven every country with his own sh** had it been we did not leave Nigeria to rot we would have been better in son areas than the UK u so praise

bros no Dey deceive people for here, security guards are struggling to make ends meet in the uk. You can’t even afford rent in London as a security guard. It’s house share or council house. Why you Dey deceive people na ?
You must be joking.

Securities make a lot depending on where you are working.

Many securities earn 2000 or more after tax and that is more than enough to live well by yourself.

brother forget that thing oooo, you see grumbling and complaining is now an Olympic sport in Nigeria but when it’s time to eat you will see mr poor man eat 6 wraps of eba with 4 meat and 2 boiled egg. Don’t be deceived by peoples wailing it’s just something they love doing but truth is the average Nigerian is living well, it is when they japa and see real hardship in England that they start to long to return back home. It’s whe you travel out you will know you are enjoying in naija.

You live in an apartment.
You and your wife can afford this and still have change.
If what you studied is not gonna get you employed, change route provided you don't have paper problem
Eg, you can apply for train driver apprentice training, go through all the tests and enter, once you enter, look for an opening for what you studied as you climb along or better continue as a driver.
It's lots of money and stable job.

This post is in response to the thread below about the high cost of fish in Nigeria. You can find the thread here
https://www.nairaland.com/8225493/see-what-experience-market-woman/1#132221604

Here are some fishes i bought fot just 12 pounds. They are 8 in number. I bought it alongside grinded ogbonno. You can see the grounded ogbonno in the transparent pack that cost about 4 pounds.

So i ended up spending 16.17 pounds in this African shop i went to. I also attached the receipt.

Guess what? The 8 fishes, i was holding one when i took d pix.. i got for 12 pounds is just an hour wage rate. This is what i am paid in just one our of working.

While converting the prices to Naira might be expensive the actual reality is how much effort is put to achieve that earning putting time factor into consideration.
Congratulations bro.

But you are not doing better than the average 'mayguard' in Nigeria.

Also, the minimum wage of 70k is basic salary. Other allowances bring it up to 110k. @femi4 and co, take note.
