Should Nigeria Do The Same As Brazil? (photos) by LoopyNigeria(op):
Brazilian authorities on Friday began closing down more than 2,000 betting sites, including those that sponsors popular football team Corinthians and other first division clubs, as part of a push to regulate online gambling.

Latin America's biggest economy is struggling with what Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has called a betting "pandemic," prompting the government to tighten the screws on the sector.

Since 2018, when Brazil legalized sports betting sites, online gambling has operated in a regulatory free-for-all, subject to virtually no rules or taxes.

Some of the most popular sites take bets on sporting fixtures, but Brazilians have also become hooked on gambling games like Aviator, where players gamble on the flight of a virtual airplane, or the online casino game Fortune Tiger.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government has called time on sites that failed to sign up to new regulations due to take effect in January.

The new rules seek to combat fraud and money laundering and protect users, by for example banning minors from betting.

"Anyone who is not regularized, or in the process of being regularized, is being taken off the air," Haddad said in a statement.

The finance ministry said it had identified 2,040 "suspicious domains" which it had asked the telecoms regulatory agency Anatel to block.

On the blacklist is Esportes da Sorte, which sponsors Corinthians, one of Brazil's most popular football clubs, as well as Athletico Paranaense, Bahia and Gremio de Porto Alegre.

The ministry said the betting sites would be blocked and banned from advertising, "which includes, for example, sponsoring football clubs."

More than 200 other sites will be allowed to continue to operate after agreeing to the new rules.

Brazil's central bank estimates that 24 million out of Brazil's 212 million inhabitants, roughly one in nine people, gamble online.

Lula warned recently that betting was causing many low-income Brazilians to get into debt.

The betting industry in Nigeria is almost wholly owned and controlled by people that either associated to the current presidency, or people from his area. And with the base sentiments that propell policies under a primitive APC era, nothing is going to happen. I didnt even know this untill buhari made some noises some years back about banning the bettingcompanies. The then vice president surreptitiously stepped in, and they managed to squash that.

You can check the guys heading the agency in charge of supervising the betting industry in Nigeria, it is the same people. They have it on a chokehold as they have the banking and the insurance industries. Betting is a multi billion dollar business in Nigeria. I mean, the guy that owns bet9ja just opened a bank. Even if it is going to be banned, it will not be under this regime.

Banning is NOT the solution.

Fools will always find a way to WASTE their money. Whether through gambling or giving it to SCAMMERS in the form of tithes and otterings.

Best way to tackle this is to TAX churches and betting companies at a rate of 75%.

They will only increase the tax on the betting firms?

This figure up there is scary. It hasn't turned to this in Nigeria.

If you tax churches 75%, the burden will be transferred to their gullible members. They will be made to pay 40% of their monthly income as tithe. And as you already know, they'll gladly do and pour their frustrations on the government.

And more problems for the government too, because as the gullible members give more of their income to the pastor, they'll have less to spend. And so , they will complain and protest more.

Why not be fair enough? Why church alone? What of Mosques and Traditional homes? You leave what is being discussed to talk about Church.

Meanwhile, read very well, Brazilian government is not saying total ban, they actually said Those Betting firms who until January will not comply with the new directives to cub indiscriminate gambling will be shut. Total ban can never be possible especially in a country like Brazil that a proportional part of their population can not do without betting on sporting event

I have to say the truth mai bloda.
Seriously, i got to know that the betting industry is a "juicy" part of the economy during that period that Buharis men mooted the idea of caging the companies. You can go and check, the opposition was mainly from the southwest operators and members in the National Assembly. Do your checks. The way they vigorously coopted the vice president to help squash the plan, made me to investigate more and to notice how profitable that line of business is.

And they did what businesses do everywhere; protect your turf! So I'm not hating. I'm just saying things the way i saw them. I mean, if they fought against the plan to scrap the betting industry in Nigeria from a regional perspective, why would i be hounded for mentioning that the way it happened? Seriously, I'm tired of being politically correct. It's no more helping matters. I just stated the facts. Run an unbiased check and come back here to tell us what you found out about the events of those days. That was towards the tail end of buharis administration.

It should be regulated...

Betting has brought more disadvantages than good to the nigerian society.

It shouldn't be banned completely though but strictly regulated!

Betting is not a good thing...... Shutting it down is a sign of insensitive governance...

Any reasonable leader will create enabling environment for the youths to thrive... And engaging activities.

Reviewing the school curriculum to create skills acquisition and technical studies. Practical computer classes. Reduce the theoretical and note writing classes.

Many Nigerians will have enough skills to show for and travel around to earn legit money.

With this your comment, an uninformed person would think all the betting companies in Nigeria were established last year.
I mean, criticize if you wanna but don't undermine your cognitive capacity while doing that.

Critical reason and education is what most of you lack.

The North being predominant Muslims, their religion doesn't permit gambling, hence, they can not own betting companies.

The present government should also come up with the Idea of banning the cattle rearers from roaming, this also, has caused alot of issues/wars/killings BTW fulani and several communities and then, let us see which people will go against it.

Very true

China has banned betting. Since years ago.

The Chinese betting companies just moved their physical offices overseas and also moved themselves online.

They also moved to Europe and started sponsoring shirts of club sides ( See epl where some clubs have Chinese betting firms on their shirts). Meanwhile the epl is very popular in China..clever advertising

We ban betting in Nigeria, people like Baba ijebu will just move their offices overseas, and their online operations will keep ticking.
