Christopher Columbus Likely Spanish And Jewish, Study Suggests. by Botragelad(op): 7:03pm On Oct 13, 2024
Famed explorer Christopher Columbus was likely Spanish and Jewish, according to a new genetic study conducted by Spanish scientists that aimed to shed light on a centuries-old mystery.

Scientists believe the explorer, whose expedition across the Atlantic in 1492 changed the course of world history, was probably born in western Europe, possibly in the city of Valencia.

They think he concealed his Jewish identity, or converted to Catholicism, to escape religious persecution.

The study of DNA contradicts the traditional theory, which many historians had questioned, that the explorer was an Italian from Genoa.

Columbus led an expedition backed by Spain's Catholic Monarchs seeking to establish a new route to Asia - but instead he reached the Caribbean.

His arrival there was the beginning of a period of European contact with the Americas, which would lead to conquest and settlement - and the deaths of many millions of indigenous people to diseases and war.

Countries have argued for years over the explorer's origin, with many claiming him as one of their own.

There have been an estimated 25 conflicting theories of his birthplace, including Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary and Scandinavia.

These new findings are based on more than two decades of research.

The study began in 2003, when José Antonio Lorente, professor of forensic medicine at Granada University, and the historian Marcial Castro, exhumed what were believed to be the remains of Columbus from Seville Cathedral.

Columbus died in the Spanish city of Vallodalid in 1506 but wished to be buried on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. His remains were taken there in 1542 but centuries later were transferred to Cuba before being finally laid to rest in Seville.

The researchers also took DNA samples from the tomb, and from the bones of Columbus' son, Hernando, and brother, Diego

Since then scientists have compared that genetic information with that of historical figures and the explorer's relatives in order to try and solve the mystery.

The previously widely accepted theory was that Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451, to a family of wool weavers.

But they now believe he lived in Spain - likely in Valencia - and was Jewish. They think he hid his background to avoid persecution.

Around 300,000 practicing Jews lived in Spain, before they along with Muslims were ordered to either convert to Catholicism or leave the country in 1492, the year Columbus landed in the Americas.

Announcing the study's results on the television documentary Columbus DNA: His True Origin, Professor Lorente said they were "almost absolutely reliable".

The programme - which aired on Spain's national broadcaster RTVE on Saturday night - coincided with Spain's National Day.

The day celebrates the explorer's arrival in the Americas.

I'm NOT deeply surprised. No doubt, Cristofero Colombo (Columbus) was a "secret Sephardic Jew" from evidence I have read for years now which have now been further confirmed by extensive ancestry DNA tests.

Reading extensively about the trans-Atlantic expeditions to the so-called New World or the Americas from August 3, 1492 to October 12, 1492 of Cristofero Colombo (Christopher Columbus) and the three ships and crew in more advanced history books and archival sources many decades back, he had up to four well-documented Jewish ship crew members on board his expeditions.

As of 1492 (the same year Columbus sailed out with his crew), a combined military force of Spanish forces led by Queen Isabella I of Castile in the West of Spain and her husband, King Ferdinand II of Aragon in the East of Spain unleashed a crushing blow and finally kicked out or expelled from Granada (the last Muslim stronghold in Southern Spain) the Muslim Moors of Berber and Arab descent who had infiltrated Spain up to the borders of modern France through waves of armed conquest via North Africa (close to 800 years before the 1492 expulsions. For close to 800 years, Spain was under Muslim Moorish control and was known in Arabic as Al-Andalus.

Any how, the Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic Jews also found a way of working with the Muslim Moors of Spain in the areas of trading, translation, knowledge, and more. As of the time of the expulsion of the Muslim Moors, the Jews also suffered the same fate in the hands of the indigenous Spanish who viewed them with suspicion and EXPELLED many Jews and some fled to North Africa, others went to Holland and others went to Istanbul in the Ottoman Empire (modern Turkey), some Jews who also quickly converted to the Roman Catholic religion (they were known as the Marranos) were allowed to stay in Spain.

This Columbus DNA study simply shows how the Jews pretty much moved around Europe, North Africa, Asia, etc, and surreptitiously mixed up with other European, Caucasus region, and Asian ethnicities in terms of ancestry over the centuries. I would further reckon that it's his paternal and maternal lines that are Jewish based off of information that's been around for over 100 years but from the 1930s, some researchers had suspected that he wasn't Italian since he spoke and wrote better Spanish than Italian. There are Berbers of North Africa today who from their ancestry DNA test results have small percentages (10 percent or less) of Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal region) ancestries in them due to the mixing of male Berbers and Arabs with the conquered indigenous Spanish women after they invaded Spain. The Fulanis of Guinea and elsewhere in West Africa (who's ancestry DNA test results I have extensively studied) have North African Berber paternal ancestry too and they also show some percentage traces of this Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) DNA markers or ancestry. This accurately fits into the historical oral and written traditions of Fulahs (Fulanis) who say that they are of North African Berber origins. The Touaregs (who are called Buzu in Nigeria) of Niger Republic and Mali are also of direct Berber origins. The maternal lineage of Fulanis though is MAJORLY West African from mainly the Senegal and Mauritania region from where they migrated out to other areas as partly religious Tijaniya clerics and nomadic hordes to populate parts of West Africa.

In rounding off, there are indeed many folks who are Jewish paternally and maternally in the United States, Canada, South America, the Caribbean countries, the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe and Asia but NOT many people realize it on time because Jews have a "notorious" habit for centuries now of changing their family names to that of other popular ethnic groups when they migrated in the past to new countries while dropping traces of their old names, (so, as to blend and/or avoid facing shame and discrimination). The well-known American Dem politician, John Kerry was originally thought to be of Irish immigrant descent by many but when he gained more prominence politically, the TRUTH about his family's Jewish immigrant roots from Hungary came to the fore from immigration and ancestral records.

Centuries-old mystery of Christopher Columbus’ true origins revealed in study
Story by Reuters. Published 7:21 AM EDT, Sun October 13, 2024

The 15th-century explorer Christopher Columbus was a Sephardic Jew from Western Europe, Spanish scientists said on Saturday, after using DNA analysis to tackle a centuries-old mystery.

Several countries have argued over the origins and the final burial place of the divisive figure who led Spanish-funded expeditions from the 1490s onward, opening the way for the European conquest of the Americas.

Many historians have questioned the traditional theory that Columbus came from Genoa, Italy. Other theories range from him being a Spanish Jew or a Greek, to Basque, Portuguese or British.

The findings are due to be announced in a documentary titled Columbus DNA: The True Origin on Spain's national broadcaster TVE on Saturday.

In recent years there has been pushback to Columbus Day celebrations, which take place on 12 October, marking his arrival in the Americas.

Nick Tilsen, president of the NDN Collective, an indigenous-led advocacy group, has said for the US to "celebrate that history is absolutely disrespectful".

"Columbus was a lost explorer who stumbled into this part of the world and brought famine, colonisation, the deaths of millions of indigenous peoples," he added.

Won't it be an excellent thing to have Nigerian scholars publish their studies, research work and discoveries with the benefits advancing the course of the Nigerian project instead of our media space continuosly being flooded with progress report from other climes, while our academia is preoccupied with "strike today, strike tomorro"? undecided

Re: Christopher Columbus Likely Spanish And Jewish, Study Suggests. by musicwriter(m):
Christopher Columbus was a Jew. He was the person that sold the idea of the Atlantic slave trade to Europeans.

Why?

Because the so called Jews were suffering persecution in Europe at that time. Columbus actually convinced Europeans that they were not the real "Jews" and that the real Jews lives in Africa!! However, that's the truth.

In about 1884, he frequented West Africa where he experimented on the kidnapping of black people. He said in his diary that he "kidnapped" about six people off the coast of Guinea and Ghana and took them to Europe. This first voyage was funded by a wealthy Jewish Rabbi named Don Isaac and other Jews.

It was after the Spanish king and queen were convinced that such abduction of black people en mass was possible that they agreed to fund his second voyage to the Americas.
