But I actually think the woman is a good woman.

I also think the man is a good man as well, as he did not go behind his wife to secretly marry another wife. He also respects his wife very much to seek her opinion and permission.

Today, due to the complexity of life and society in general , polygamy, just like monogamy, has to undergo a bit of reform to make it work as marriage in general, did not evolve in the urban and industralized experience; a result of which the entire institution in all its variance, is under huge stress.

Here is my proposal (and I will start with a declaration) for Polygamy in Nigeria and elsewhere where the local people may be interested:

DECLARATION: Polygamy is a valid type of marriage in Nigeria at all times, equal in status and function as monogamy.

PROPOSAL:

1. In the light of the poor socio-economic situation in the country and the fact the number of ELLIGIBLE women for marriage far out-strip the number of ELLIGIBLE MEN, polygamy, especially polygyny (a man having more than one wife), should be included in statutory marriage.

2. A man is judged able to take more than one wife if he satisfies the statutory conditions of being a person of stature and means. He should also obtain the EXPRESS and FREE consent of his first wife.

A. To ascertain a man's stature, three documents should be required of which two must be judged favourable to the man in question. The documents should be letter of attestation of character from all of the following:

i. The secondary school where he spent a minimum of three years.

ii. His primary place of assignment during his time at the National Youth Service Corp.

iii. A report from the local police of all places he has lived in for a minimum of 6 months.

B. Means: with regards to polygyny, a man is judged a person of means if, at the time of taking a new wife, he can provide a minimum of four (4) times the cost of living as decided by the National Bereau of Statistics or other relevant and competent governmental institutions, to his existing wife/wives, and the intended new.

3. A man who already has a wife/wives, is automatically barred from marrying a woman with whom he has either had a carnal knowledge or a child regardless of the fact he may fulfil all other conditions.

Also, the option of monogamy should available for those who want it; i.e, it should be included in the marriage contract between a woman who does not want at any point in the future to have a co-wife, and her intended husband, a clause to ensure he never brings up the issue of having a new wives.
