Human Rights Lawyer and social commentator, malcolm omirhobo, keeps sharing his thoughts on Gowon and the civil war: TO ACCEPT THE ABURI ACCORD IS BETTER THAN THE NO VICTOR NO VANQUISH PROCLAMATION AND THE 3Rs PROMULGATION POLICY BY CHIEF MALCOLM EMOKINIOVO OMIRHOBO . It is a shame that 57 years after the Aburi Accord Nigeria is still talking of restructuring . No thanks to Gowon who bungled it The Aburi Accord was a agreement reached between the Nigerian government and the secessionist state of Biafra on January 4-5 1967, in Aburi, Ghana. The accord aimed to resolve the Nigerian Civil War. Key options and agreements included 1. Confederation: Nigeria would become a confederation of semi-autonomous regions 2. Regional autonomy: Regions would have more control over internal affairs. 3. Abolition of the Federal Government's right to make laws for regions 4. Creation of a weak central government 5. Establishment of a constitutional conference If Gowon had implemented the Aburi Accord there would have been no war, no waste of resources , no loss of lives and properties, no need for the "No victor, no vanquished" proclamation and no need for the promulgation of policy of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (the 3Rs)

They preferred to obey a useless clause that gave away an oil rich peninsular to a smaller neighbor than obey a clause that ensured the country existed peacefully and not in chaos. |

Una never jam! Consequently, una go wail till the end of time. You think, na only una get sense, ni? Everybody else (in Nigeria), are dense. Aburi accord was exactly the opposite of Decree 34 established by Ironsi and which Ojukwu explicitly supported. He even went on air the following day bragging about how he intends to export young graduates from his region to the north to go and fill most of the civil service posts, therein. Ojukwu hailed his kinsman for unifying the civil service with his d.u.mb decree 34. Meanwhile, both the military governors from the north and the mid-west were opposed to it which they unambigously vocalised to Ironsi and only Fajuyi abstain from articulating his opinion on the controversial policy by his clueless friend, Ironsi. Now fast forward to Aburi and the same ojukwu that jubilated the centralisation of our civil service now wants a return to regionalism, simply because his kinsman is no more the HOS. What a slimeball!! Your (smart, sic!) hunter is now, the hunted. Deal with it. Your greed got you to where you are now. If only, you had let the northerners be. |

If Igbo had not conspired to displaced the civilian government and killing regional leaders of other regions in 1966, there wouldn't have been the so called aburi accord. We had democratic government in place then and we all know that coup is not one of the way to change a government in democracy, neither is it allowed to attempt to restructure a country through military coup. If any one is not happy with government or the structure in place, the best is to strive and convince the population to vote for you and your idea of what structure you think is best for the country. Democracy offers us opportunities to change government peacefully at given time intervene should we not be satisfied with the policy and doing of the government. |

T9ksy:In other words, the Lagos/Ibadan expressway media could not differentiate between centralising the civil service of the Regions, and abolishing the Region's themselves? Really? You guys could not even understand that the 4 Region's maintained their boundaries under Ironsi, as well had resource control? All you people were thinking about was that an Easterner could be sent to work in the West, a Northerner could be sent to work in the Midwest etc, and this is the Region's being abolished? No wonder when Gowon desecrated the Aburi agreement by abolishing the 4 Region's with Decree 14, including your own Region, created 12 states, half of which he gave the North, then abolished resource control with Decree 15, you guys jumped and cheered Gowon Your Region and control of your own resources were being stripped in front of you by Gowon, the North was being proped up with multiple states, and all you people were thinking about is who might be sent to work where? Chei! God help us |

He accepted it initially until Britain told him not to and he changed his mind. The war was between Biafra and Britain with Gowon as a puppet. If britain had not interfered, Biafra would have concluded that war by evening of May 1967 |

T9ksy:It is obvious Fajuyi the then governor of western region was in support of Ironsi's decree 34 and other policies of his regime. The Yoruba military officers was in full support and participated in that January 1966 coup but once the table turns against the Igbo nation Yoruba people both in the army switch their allegiance to the victorious North and ndi Igbo became their political enemies and manufactured every possible propaganda for their new friends. Ironsi's unification decree was unpardonable sin according to Yoruba/Fulani alliance yet they consolidated that decree in the past 58 years. |

The simple truth is gowon was a semi illiterate armed with stark illiterates as aids and assistants, it took a federal commissioner a Benin prince to translate to gowon and his entourage of aids that went to aburi Ghana the meaning of the documents the signed, it’s embarrassing but true, that was why gowon went back to school after he was overthrown, the northern oligarchy just used him.they knew what they were doing. |

You can always trend useless things to make yourself happy. Ojuku was a rebel, he can’t dictate for Nigeria. How can a loser dictate to the winner? Nobody give a bleep about any useless Aburi or the lack of it. Ojuku feck around and found out. Below was what ended his prime years.

gidgiddy:So Eastern Regional government (aka Ndigbo) will control Eastern minority oil. The fact that oil producing communities have been identified and have been given their own states to (mis)manage their oil revenue is much better than a BS accord. |

History and present events have shown that a Nigerian is prone to using good causes to further personal interests. Ojukwu was using hiding under a good cause to further his own personal desires. The Aburi accords were good, but Ojukwu wanted it so he could be the supreme leader in the Eastern States since he could not rule over a united Nigeria and would have been a dictator just like Gowon who also felt the Aburi accords would reduce his powers and make him a figure head in the restructured Nigeria. Gowon and Ojukwu engaged in a needless war because of thier egos. Also, if Ojukwu had stuck to holding the core Eastern states, Biafra would have succeeded. But by extending his resources towards the then middle belt, he overstretched himself and this is one of the things that turned the tide of the war. The same thing is playing out with Kanu and Ekpa, and to a lesser extent in the Niger-Delta. All the so called secessionist and freedom fighters are hiding under noble causes to enrich themselves and oppress others just as those oppressing the masses today are doing. They want to be supreme leaders. They want to corner the commonwealth for themselves. 99% of so called freedom fighters around the world end up being tyrants and far worse than those they fought. This is why I can never support violent agitations because those who use the violence to justify thier agitations would use that same violence to rule whatever new society that comes out from such agitation. |

As he didn’t implement it and your started war, didn’t you pay for it? Up till now, the nonsense has not and will never be implemented, whenever you are ready to start another war, just go ahead and you will receive the same treatment you got the other time |
