Soon after he left Abuja for the United States of America, information filtered to Abuja and Makurdi that one of the Governor’s aides was caught with 3.8 million US dollars cash on arrival in the US. The unnamed aide is said to have told security agents that the money belonged to his boss, the state Governor.
Fresh Facts’ sources confirmed in Abuja last week that following this development, the Governor was alleged to have been interrogated by the security agencies in the US. In his defence, the Governor is said to have told the agents that he carried the money to help in the purchase of pigs to develop swine farming in Benue State. “He told his interrogators that he had earlier signed an agreement with the Iowa State University to revitalize the swine industry in Benue”, a Presidency source told Fresh Facts in Abuja last week. News of the Governor’s new travails in the United States became the most topical issue for discussion in Makurdi in the past one week. It was openly discussed in offices, newspaper stands, beer parlors and other public places. The information was also widely circulated by GSM text messages by indigenes of the state in Makurdi and other towns in Nigeria and abroad. So widespread was the information that even though the media had not reported it, the state government issued a statement saying the information is false.
