It is not about ordinary northerners on the street, it is about the interests of the northern political class. They know that a drop from the VAT money allocated to them, means less funds to be tossed around Let's learn to direct our anger and resentment against the political class but not against ordinary citizens like us. |

What is equity and fairness? Every policy and programme of the federal government has been formulated and implemented to the disadvantage of the South East region. So, why is the North clamouring for equity? |

After one region became 20 federating units while two regions were allowed only 17 federating units, anything northern politicians do not want to be in Nigeria cannot be. The undue large number of states created in the old Northern region by northern military dictators gives northern politicians a near veto power on any matter concerning Nigeria. Obasanjo and Jonathan tried to change the political structure, but the north refused. President Tinubu campaigned for more than 12 years all over the SW region for change of the political structure. Tinubu has kept quite on the issue of the fraudulent political structure since he became president of Nigeria. . |

All muslim states that adopted sharia and destroys alcohol must never enjoy its tax benefits, that’s logical. That is the only amendment that is required in the tax reforms. However, ensuring that Tinubu remains a one term president is a task every patriotic Nigerian must endorse. Dude is the worst disaster that occurred to Nigeria since 1970. |

Tinubu is here to reform the system. Northern forum keep Destroying beer, yet collect tax from beer. This must stop. ![]() Woke and Tinubu's striking combo in Abuja is one destined by history..when they are done, North will learn how to come to Equity with clean hands. |

When it comes to free money, thieves often feel entitled. Fine, let's see consumption statistics on all 'VATable' goods in Nigeria and distribute the tax revenues accordingly. That's when they will weep most. Speaking English doesn't show you have education contents. Telecom, power, oil and gas, banking, food and drinks, etc have data which show how goods and services are available and consumed in Nigeria. It's rogury and robbery to take money from those who are generating revenues and give it to those who are averse to working for it. Rather than getting those details, they just jumped up to say rubbish. Nonsense. |

michoim:You read the right up wrongly. The bill actually wants the VAT to go to the states where the items are consumed because VAT is a consumption tax. Since the North is against the consumption of beer, only states that allow alcohol consumption should enjoy the proceeds of VAT from alcohol sales. |

Omodua:Restructure? Northern politicians will ask you to come to the National Assembly for political restructuring knowing full well that the National Assembly is overpopulated by legislators from the old Northern region through the vice of the excess number of states created by northern military dictators in the old Northern region. If a southeasterner asks for political restructuring, some southern folks will even say one state in the north is larger than total land mass of all the five southeast states added together, so why ask for more states for the southeast? |

fineboynl:They have said Headquarters location should not matter, so let's go by consumption statistics. We need to see their percentages in telecommunications, power oil and gas, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, etc. We'll then distribute VAT revenues accordingly. I believe they would regret it. They lie about population and other data but businesses know where they are selling. Nonsense. |

RecentHistory:You're the unfortunate zombie because you do not know that revenue sharing formula in Nigeria is largely based on population size and derivation (crude oil). Now ask your silly head, between north and south, who has the highest population in Nigeria? If you don't wake up and start asking critical questions and tackling the government you'll wake up in few years to realise that southern leaders are the one designing the chains used to enslave southerners in the contraption called Nigeria. By then you'll start singing the outdated song; Nigeria government is using southern resources to develop the north |

LandMann:A blockhead from nowwhere thinks he's smarter than the Governor of Gombe that was begging less than 2 years ago. Revenue will no longer be shared based on population but based on your generated revenue. The Gombe Governor who is saying this nonsense now was begging 2 years ago. Despite that, he's been fingered in stealing public money. No free money anywhere again. Be productive or perish.

I think everyone can see very clearly now why the North will never support regionalism and change of 1999 constitution! Northerners are leeches - parasites feeding on the resources of the South to survive. You bring almost nothing to the table but you always like to have the largest share of the meal - no be madness be that ? I've been saying it;North is the major problem of Nigeria and that's because it is a region that's deeply rooted in archaic Islamic ideologies. You can check anywhere in the world with such retrogressive ideologies and see for yourself how they're faring - Yemen , Afghanistan, Somalia, Pakistan, etc. Las las,we go brake up this unworkable contraption called Nigeria and everybody go answer their papa names! Funny people, you claim alcohol is "Haram" but you want the largest share from its sales proceeds! |

| Re: Northern Governors Oppose Proposed Tax Reform Bill, Ask NASS To Reject It by Christlike01: 12:25pm On Oct 29, 2024 |
Ikaeniyan0:This is because companies remit VAT using the location of their headquarters and tax office and not where the services and goods are consumed. Is the above their "valid point" ? That's laughable, you know ? So Northerners are consuming alcohol and that's why they are taking the largest share from its revenue, right ? How on earth would any company site its headquarters in a location where it is recording low sales and patronage ? The truth is that Southerners have stronger purchasing powers and that's why about 75% of IGR comes from the South. It is only the northern elites - politicians, traditional rulers, military and security chiefs - ex and serving-, business men (with privileged backgrounds),and few others that are rich;the vast majority of northerners are extremely poor! Let's face it; the Northerners only want the loopsided arrangement of reaping where they did not sow to continue! They enjoy destroying alcohols -bottles and contents- in the north but these same northerners take the largest shares from its sales revenue! No be hypocrisy and greed be that ? Wether they like it or not, it's regionalism, where everyone can develop at their own pace,or "to your tents, O Israel" ! |

Christlike01:Is it only alcohol we get VAT from? What they are talking about is valid. What they are complaining about should be look into by the lawmakers, and the lawmakers should also make sure states practicing shari'a shouldn't get 1 Kobo from VAT gotten from alcoholic drink |
| Re: Northern Governors Oppose Proposed Tax Reform Bill, Ask NASS To Reject It by bjdon: 12:37pm On Oct 29, 2024 |
The current VAT sharing formula is just another way the south subsidizes the North. VAT is paid on goods services in a particular location. If my state has made efforts to increase economic activity, why should the VAT from such activity be going to another state? Without these kind of reforms the north will NEVER stand on it's feet and will remain poor, backward and underdeveloped |
