Long before the ongoing blackout in the North, there has been an extreme energy dichotomy between the South (particularly Southwest) and the North. This energy drought in the North has forced industries to either close or migrate to South.
 
The Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) data paints a lopsided image of the energy dichotomy. Eko and Ikeja Discos get 12.94% and 15.22% respectively. This means that Lagos State alone enjoys over 28% of the nation’s electricity supply – more than the combined allocation of the entire North.
 
From 70s to late 90s, Kano was a mega industrial hub in Nigeria. Bustling textile industries like Gaskiya, Holborn, Universal, Bagauda, ATM, Adhama, Tofa, Angel Spinning & Dyeing, etc that produced export-quality products are either closed or partially operating today. Up to late 90s, there were at least 5 biscuits companies – Kaura, Al-Hilal, Bagauda, Mai Reke and Riviera – operating in Kano. They’re no more today. The first confectionary factory in Nigeria, Nicco Sweets, was established in Kano in 1960. Later, more confectionaries such as Amka, Madina and Rana toffees established their factories in the state. Their sites today give pitiable sight to behold. They have either become warehouses or scrapyards for recycling plastics.
 
But who is to blame for this? I blame the past Northern leaders who did nothing to improve the energy imbalance and restore our lost industrial glory.

Most times I do feel like the North owns Nigeria. They enjoy the best of the country all round. Yet we claim one Nigeria

Distribution companies serving the Northern areas that dont pay power bills, will struggle to make enough money to buy electricity to distribute.

If they cant make money, then they will not take up all the power allocated to them by generating companies.

Power companies in the South will swoop in, buy the additional allocations, and supply it to their paying customers.

I blame the Shagari government for connecting far too many people who could not pay for power to the grid.

First of they're more dominating than south south, they're so privileged with many things.

When you see some of these imbalances between the Northern and the Southern Nigeria, you will simply come to the conclusion that this contraption of a country needs to dissolved, divided.

Northern Nigeria heavily drag this country backwards.

There are good policies that should have been implemented decades ago would have ensured adequate power generation in this country.

But the North stood vehemently against its implementation.

Till when should the south continue stumbling under the heavy load of northern Nigeria?

The North has lots of development potentials, but corruption by their politicians and laziness the entire Northern populace keep development and progress in tight check.

The North could have done so much with agriculture and agro allied industries but their leaders killed it with banditry that they brought in, all in the name of politics.

If you know the good legislations that could have brought development to Nigeria but killed by the northerners in both legislative chambers all in the name that it doesn't favour the north, you will wail and rend your garments for this country called Nigeria.

Northern Nigeria politicians are the worst in the world, the north is cursed with the worst leaders.

No Southern politician wants to look their Northern counterparts in the face and tell them the glaring truth, why?.

If you dared it, your national political career would fizzle out.

The North has so drained and dragged this contraption downwards that we'd actually gotten used to it.

The North for some decades now have not used up to 10% of their agricultural potential. Laziness, lazy political leaders, religion and selfish politics brought this on.

In the last few years, they finally dragged the Middle Belt down with them to that mud through killer herdsmen and bandits.

The middle belt is the real food producers of this country, but check out what the north did to them!

The current food crises in the country is partly caused by the crippling effects of the Northern elements towards the middle belt.

I know some innocent tribes in the north will feel bad reading this, yes I lumped y'all together, you failed in speaking up for yourselves.

For Nigeria to really move forward, something has to be done about the crippling effects of the north.

Many of the people who don't pay for power have prepaid meters. The problem is, they bypass them

They barely pay bills..
