How Poultry, Packaging Cartels Fix Prices, By FCCPC Boss by Newlymarried(op): 5:43pm On Oct 31, 2024
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has revealed how cartels in Nigeria’s poultry and packaging industries manipulate prices to remain high despite government support.

This disclosure was made by FCCPC's Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Mr. Tunji Bello, at a stakeholders’ meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, part of the agency's advocacy campaign against exploitative pricing across Nigeria.

According to Bello, large players in the poultry industry have created an environment where smaller farmers are pressured to follow inflated pricing strategies. “The small poultry owners used to sell a day-old chick for between N480 and N590 and still made a profit,” Bello stated. "But with two large players entering the market, they were soon in a position to control 80 to 90 percent of the poultry market in the city."

These large players allegedly hijacked the local poultry farmers' association, raising the price of a day-old chick to N1,350, counteracting economic principles that suggest increased production should reduce prices. Government support has been ongoing, including the provision of broilers, feeds, and financial aid through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. However, despite these interventions, poultry prices continue to climb. For instance, the cost of starter mash has jumped from N11,000 in October 2023 to N23,500 by October 2024.

Bello also highlighted pricing manipulation within the packaging industry. “The cartel in the packaging sector consists of five major players who control prices in a mafia-like fashion. If you attempt to check the price with another supplier, the first seller would have already informed the next to quote the same price,” Bello said.

While such practices could be penalized under the FCCPC Act, which allows for fines and jail terms, the FCCPC has opted for dialogue to encourage fair practices. Bello urged businesses in Akwa Ibom to work with the FCCPC to prevent exploitative pricing and promote market integrity.

Bello also noted that President Bola Tinubu has introduced economic relief measures, including food import tariff reductions, VAT removal on pharmaceuticals, and tax waivers for businesses. "It is only fair that our businessmen and businesswomen share such gains with consumers in the form of reduced prices," Bello concluded.

This is what we re facing right now, imagine buying just 50pieces of day old Agrited chick at 1830 which almost 100k? Too expensive. How do we want to recoup this?

Those who made the revelation know what step to take.

It's their duty to let the public be aware of what has been causing ridiculous price of eggs

It is not easy to deal with in reality in so far as prices are not fixed or regulated. You can sell Milo in your supermarket for 2k and I can sell in mine for 3k.

I should not be "dealt with" for that as I break no laws. I'll simply blame my logistic cost. What should happen is that you should be principled enough to keep selling at 2k , since you obviously make a profit, rather than hike to 3k to take make more money at the expense of Nigerians.

Tunji Bello is simply trying to tell Nigerians we are unpratiotically causing each other misery because of either greed or how powerful interest groups, eyeing political gains, are forcing us to do so.

What most do not know is that high food cost today, quadruple or more, is due to the cartel opportunism Tunji Bello has revealed in the poultry sector.

Governors should do more, supporting large scale farming in their States, to defeat agricultural crop and livestock blackmailers from other States of Nigeria who are following a political agenda.

Some associations need to be disbanded as it's of no use to the consumers and themselves.

They want to fix ridiculous price while whatever profits they make would go back to weekly meeting money, someone is having events BLA BLA

Is the cost of operation not much for the large producers particularly, if they have to supply everything from water to electricity? They are not to bear the losses for doing business if they have a way to shift the burden to the consumers.

Agberoes association are a big problem in the Lagos transport sector in particular.
I have seen instances where drivers are forced to increase Tfares simply cos the agberoes want their own share to be increased....over the years, when are you gonna call for the ban of agbero association?

The problem is that govt workers who don't own businesses think things can be done cheaper. They don't know that many of them are running on diesel. Items used in making feeds are too expensive. Logistics is not smiling at all. Touts and agberos are not helping matters. If you want to see prices come down, solve the problem of power, road, rise in price of feeds, agberos and see prices come down

If they sell it cheaply, will fuel stations give them fuel cheaply?
Will they buy foodstuff cheaply?

No man is an island.

If the price of fuel and imported essential commodities go up, price of everything else will go up otherwise, businesses will collapse.

We appreciate the FCCCPC telling us the problem but it needs to take concrete action against auch companies.

There should be a framework for investigating acts of price gouging such as this and make all erring companies to pay hefty fines on each occasion.

If you are copying the American/western systems ensure you copy the checks and balances too.

I have always found it amazing that frozen foods stores sell for the same price, like no matter where you go Turkey is 7000 per kilo
