Recycling is money where there is an industry to back it, otherwise it is no different from hoarding or simply moving trash from one point to another. Worse, if not done appropriately could wreak more harm on those involved as well as the environment.

I am referring to the adult folks. These are the types of jobs some of our people are doing abroad to send money home.

Abroad, you will see guys going from one trash container to another looking for empty bottles or anything they can sell to recycling companies.

Same job, different locations, with different pays.

Never compare recycling abroad with what is obtained in Nigeria! That was and is your first mistake!☹️

Abroad, people don't need to wade through feces, urine, and other toxic wastes to make a living unlike what is obtained in Nigeria. There is stable value to most of what is collected and there are collection centers to be found very close to where people live where these items picked up can be traded for cash. I worked recycling for a brief period some years ago and it is nothing like what you have there in those pictures or what you have in Nigeria. That is nothing close to what is in Nigeria.

I see people playing devils advocate and providing extreme case scenarios. Child labour to handle such dangerous metals scrap is even wrong. They should be home doing house chores and not helping you make livelihood you failed to provide for them individually or as their parent.

There is dignity in labour, but not in child labour carrying sharp metal scrapnel. The parents should manage that part.
