It doesn't matter what course you studied in Nigeria university, what matters is getting a hell out of Nigeria by any means necessary.
What matters here in abroad (UK) is your ability to adapt to changing circumstances, develop your self through short courses in any sector of your choice.these guys don't care about you degree what they care about is experience. If you are scared of being a "glorified clerk" what about being a security guard or a factory worker?infact when you come you may lobby to become a "glorified clerk" because being one means you work in an office were it is all warm and all cozy during your 8hrs shift..when COLD in winter wire you for here, you go know say being a "glorified clerk" na luxury.

If I had known what I know now, I would have gotten a lot further than I do now. Nonetheless, I am pleased with my success.

What we study does not matter. Just get any degree, and you can navigate your way through. The only advantage we have is that we know what is currently trending, and even if we do not study it in school, we can easily learn it. Why? Your first step should be to find a job and earn a small income in your 20s after leaving school. Become an expert in what is popular and make a living from it.

With your savings, you should do what rich men do to increase their wealth, which includes:

1. Start a business. Look for disruptive technology and innovation to solve the problems that the majority of people face, and you will make money. You may start a business and find yourself in the same league as salary earners, which is something you want to avoid. This is why you must be prepared before starting a business. And you prepare by first gaining experience earning money elsewhere and learning business management.

2. Invest in both paper and digital assets. Learn to trade or find an expert who can do it for you. Forex, futures, stocks, crypto, etc. There are three types of trading strategies: day trading, short term trading, and long term. Most people enter long term when they are unable to read charts well. Therefore, you should look into stocks and crypto. The issue is that S&P 500 and it's like generates around 18% turn over presently annually, while digital assets give like 150% ....but it is a double edged sword. You must understand the difference between gambling and investment. This is one area all rich men go into. Elon is currently working on making the doge currency stronger. Hmm. This should teach you something about digital assets.

3. Real estate: This area is very technical because there is not as much money as there used to be, but if you understand it, you will make a lot of money. The annual rental strategy is a nonsense business. I can not believe Nigerians are still building to collect annual rent. Lol...when monthly rent is no longer satisfactory in most places. The new deal involves short-term leases. It is a lucrative business. Or you get some money, buy a house, and then resell it after remodeling it to maximize your profit.

These are the three areas you should focus on. If you do not do any of the above, you will not be rich. You van be comfortable. As a result, if you have not yet begun, your first task is to become an expert in a trending business area and sell your products or services for a fee....or you use your knowledge to find a job and earn a reasonable salary.

If you can not find a good source of income, you will be stuck for a long time, believing witches and wizards are after you. Then you will have to urgently consider relocation, which is why you should seriously consider JAPA. Of course, starting with a security job, UBER driving, or any other casual job is a good way to get started. Then you can start improving and increasing your wealth from there.
Again, look into a way to make 1 instead of the 0 you are currently making. You can multiply one.

Good luck to everyone.
OP here

If Nairaland could bookmark posts, I sure would bookmark this for constant revisit. So many insights in one post.

I have a couple of questions.
1. One can easily gain money-earning experience by getting a good job. However, not all jobs afford one the opportunity to learn business management. How do you suggest one learn business management as an employee in a firm where you don’t get to see the business workings of the firm?

2. I entered crypto without much knowledge, I got my hands burnt. The volatility watered down my interests in it.
As for stock trading, If I were to start trading today, what do I need to know about the losses within it? Losing the little I have now will be beyond devastating.

Lastly, you have passed through my situation before and you are now way ahead. I wouldn’t mind getting ongoing MENTORSHIP from you please.
As for the value I should offer in return, I may not have financial resources, but I believe you can find value in me which you might need.

Thank you Sir.

Your degree matters abroad as some of the largest GDP countires in EU will only give you a work permit if you find a job in the field you studied. An easy route is to pick up a sales job as yu have knwoeldge in business admin. You could also take up skills in Microsoft Power apps which are suited for optimizing business administration and operations. The only snag is you would need at least 3-5 years cognate experience before anyone will look at your CV.

You should also prepare for the langauge, depending onthe country you go to. That you won't learn language na lie and it is not easy. You should be planning about 3 years minimum before you balance into a middle class lifestyle in obod oyinbo. The ralier you start, the better escially considerng the age factor. If you are crossing the 30 years mark , your case is gradually turning to sorry o.

Get into a globally recognised firm in professional services and/or financial services. Get the experience (at least three years). Get relevant and recognised certifications such as ACCA, CAIA, CFA etc. Actuarial certifications are also helpful. Apply to be transferred to an office in the abroad. This would take time. So five years minimum. If internal transfer isn't possible, apply to MBA programs that are good but aren't too expensive. For instance, in the UK, apply to Imperial College MBA not Cambridge or London Business School unless you get enough money or the brains to win a scholarship. In the US, target MBA programs in the Texas area - many Nigerians, lots of good schools and abundant scholarships. Make sure the MBA program is STEM approved so you benefit from the three years OPT program.

Alternatively, with your globally recognised certifications, apply to jobs in the UAE and South Africa. With a UAE or South African experience, you become further eligible for roles in the Western World and East Asia.

There are Nairalanders who have done what I outlined here. Good luck!
Thank you very much. Quite insightful.

I also appreciate your contributions towards similar topics. I’ve seen a handful of them and they’re always insightful. Thank you once again.

Learn that web development, use the airdrop money to pay for stuff you need for freelancing or cold emailing

Use that experience from those jobs and learn more from web3.

How can one get started on airdrops and zero wallet? Please mentor me.

If you're considering a career in Audit, you can start by pursuing ICAN or ACCA. I'll recommend ACCA since you are looking to travel abroad.

Since you have a BSc in Business Administration, and you're looking toward building a career in the areas you listed above, getting a certification in Finance will be a very good starting point for you. And I can tell you that Finance is still a very lucrative field even overseas. All you need to do is make sure you are tech savvy, once you are combine that with your Finance knowledge, the sky will be your starting point.

Best wishes.
Thanks a lot!
Asides from Audit, what finance path can you recommend?

Just apply for your masters, when you travel abroad, you will know that your degree means nothing or else u are a health care worker, nurse, doctor, etc, the major country that can easily give you visa once you get admission is the UK and the country doesn't care about your degree certificate, but they are so keen on your skills and certifications. Going through studies can be difficult for a start but u will be fine once u are ready to hustle. The money u make can't compare with someone in Nigeria. You don't need any skills yet just come
I should just come without planning what I’ll be doing afterwards?

I think you have bigger problems than what you are asking because you clearly aren't educated

The degree is a generalized one and doesn’t have specialization.

If you don’t specialize with that degree, yes, you’re a glorified clerk because you only learn little about everything!

Hi Gerrard, could you say what you studied in school? The CGPA you graduated with? If you feel it's too much information to reveal, you could give an hint.
For instance, the course- you could say STEM or humanities. CGPA- You could use class of degree.

Thank you.

I laid my hands on tech(web development). The saturation and absence of entry level roles threw me off. Also, I don’t enjoy it, I went into it because I heard it’s lucrative.
I regret not studying a STEM course, but there’s no need crying over spilt milk.

So far, I’m considering a career in Audit, management consulting, and investment banking.
I need ideas on what step to take next and which countries I should look towards please.
Depending on the country you definitely have to switch majors...
I suggest you even switch to a Bachelor's in IT (data analysis) & do a masters in management ...

Your course is kinda ceremonial. That's why I am glad I studied a STEM course during my time. Cuz with it, I can migrate even without having a single work experience. But I must prove my skills through assessment to ascertain that I truly acquired my qualification. It's not just a walk through process.

But there is a way out for you to augment your business admin qualification. After rounding off your biz admin, go and do a 1 and half years or 2 years PGDE and migrate as a teacher. This is one of the best options for you cuz I won't suggest school route to you if you are not financially buoyant. You only need to battle with EILTS.

Teachers are hot cake abroad. You don't even need any work experience. All you need is your 45 days teaching practice and you are good to go.

Your current main aim should be how to legally migrate to your preferred country and have a permanent stay. When you get there, you can then pursue your Audit career.
Thank you

But one can’t just pivot from teaching to auditing upon landing without having issues. The visa might be tied to the teaching job. I stand to be corrected though.

What about the school route if finances weren’t to be an issue?

The roles I’ll get with this degree aren’t hot cake roles, so it will be difficult for me to convince employers when many of their nationals can do the job without needing sponsorship. This is based solely on my research online.

What if I have ACCA plus solid work experience with a multinational accounting firm(e.g Big 4), will I be able to get a work permit to work in the accounting field in EU?
