Give the teacher the same treatment.

If it's my child:

1. The child lands in hospital.
2. The teacher lands in the morgue.
3. I land in kirikiri.

Shit happens, only God knows why, we as humans only tries to understand and if possible learn and prevent such incident from repeating itself.

The teacher shouldn't be too hard on herself and the parent of the victim should understand and tamper justice with mercy.

Teacher holding a cane is not something alien to us, it comes with the Job, how he/she uses it is a different ball game entirely.

Accident and mistakes happen but not this

If the student was being flogged, the parents would have talked about that. There is no different side to the story yet. Let's wait first.

Did you live in the village? In a village school, teachers are paid as low as 10k monthly. Which graduate will go and teach in such place except student teacher that will teach free? So it is possible the school is in a village setting. Try find that out.

I normally try to desist from using harsh words at times but I think a slowpoke will be perfectly be used to describe you for this comment.

Even if you want to use a cane is it supposed to be anywhere near a child’s face? When it happens to your own child you can feel free to understand.

What if the pupils were playing and he mistakingly ran into the cane?

When in school, I put on my ear buds for sanity and headache free sake and punish when I have to as a deterrent to others.

This thread shows the reason i dont argue on nairaland. So many people don't even understand the message.

You too dey bother yourself. Some of the people condemning caning are those who should have been caned as children but who were not.

We put our children‘s education and as such also future in teachers‘ hands and they allow unqualified or poorly qualified people to train them. It’s a shame and totally unacceptable.

Good teaching is based on scientific research, which people need years to be trained in. Using the cane is a sign of incompetence, ignorance and weakness.

I imagine that if Nigerians had better teachers, they would probably rule the world. I am in awe of the intellectual prowess of many Nigerians despite this poorly performing education system.

Students from teachers training or better still College of Education students go for teaching practice as part of the process they must pass through before they graduate, it's just like going to SIWES

I also understand your point. But we will get there; first by not accepting that as a norm.

I remember in secondary school, we were not allowed to speak any indigenous language on campus.
One day, the VP's son came to greet his father and decided to address the school.
His address turned into a speech about mental freedom and he ended it with "No one will ever stop me from speaking my mother tongue in my fatherland".
The whole assembly erupted in roar and his father nor any of the staff could comment.
That led to a change and we started greeting our Teachers in all sorts of Languages. That was the end of that colonial policy in the school.

A change starts with you, me and anyone who dares to challenge these evils.

A visit to 50% of public primary school in Nigeria, I am sure you will at least see one teacher holding a cane, some use it as a pointer during recitation etc. The intention might differs.

You can indeed conduct this visit to 50 schools (to start with) and educate them on teaching Africans with dignity. Cane is for animals and even Animals have rights in saner societies.

Why would an 11 year old be so unruly that she ran into a cane with enough force to damage her eye?

There is obviously something not being said. Unfortunately these mushroom schools that cut corners will not have cctv so it is whatever story is concoted
A mess all around and since the student teacher is the poorest variable she will get the stick

The real guilty party here is the proprietor of the school who is hiring students to teach and who does not have any process in place for child management

While starting my career in corporate world I learnt workplace, home and public safety!

It was during a session of end of the year party preparation, most likely using the cane as a gesture, probably seeked for who will lead or perform a task, then children in their usual ways rushed out and the pupil was the one in front.
With the teacher trying to commit suicide over the incident, she is most likely close to the pupils
