They should getat. Bunch of miserable educationists. undecided

So na AI dey help for exam hall?

When there was no AI, they saw it as a taboo to give that very 1st class. Many students will go abroad to more reasonable learning environments and be topping the classes and grades there. They want us to believe that's a fluke or that Nigeria edusector is better?

I dunno what's there that they keep refusing to give it. Will they choke and die?

They should keep giving excuses. Smh

A Nigerian professor at Greenwich University told me a Nigerian phd student submitted an AI generated thesis for his finals, and when told it was plagiarism and adviced to go and redo it he began begging.

The professor told him the repercussions too but he insisted, not quite understanding the professor was not the only one who would review his work. Of course he failed.

This new development will just end up devaluing our degrees.

And also at the same time spoiling work for us, lesser gig, reduced job opportunity for many on this field and interfering in our business by creating a higher rate of competition on which is more better and cheaper, making work more stressful and hectic.😞😑😞😑😑

A.I is the future, whether we like it or not...!

How you use it will underscore your level of intelligence or lack of.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in using artificial intelligence to make your learning smoother, faster, more convenient and understandable.

I honestly wish I had AI back in my undergraduate days... It would have been awesome.

The sole issue remains the mental laziness of "copy and paste".
For Nigeria. it is the end.

Lol... They should go back to using typewriters sef.

Every generation has witnessed a marked improvement and advancement in one form or aspect of life, work and education.

The only constant thing in this world is change.

People who question change are clearly uncomfortable with mental growth.
And the standard of education keeps falling by the day.

An average Nigerian teacher believes that intellectual prowess should be gotten through laborious and Herculean means. AI's has helped in building cars, machines, robots in very easy manners given the right tools and equipments. AI has helped as a reference point for professions who have forgotten a thing or two about their profession. People don't explore academically by sitting in classrooms to read some bunch of books. Knowledge is harvested from the field. Real time, practicable experiences. A first class in reading May be a third class in practicality. Embrace AI, overhaul the curriculum to accommodate on-the field experiences.

So why are they still thirdclass graduates even with AI?

Had first class (4.52/5.00) in Mathematics in 2011 without AI.

Them even give that man 5k in 2021 yet he dey complain. I received best graduatimg student award of faculty of science in 2010/2011 session among 2 other awards yet them no give me shishi.

Life no balance.
A first class in Mathematics is a big deal. What do you do now?

Is it the standard of education that is falling or the attitude of young people towards formal education?!!

Technology is supposed to make administering knowledge more fluid and effective.

And if the standard is indeed dropping, as you claim, is it due to AI or simply overall diminishing of individual and collective intelligence?

It isn't quite cut and dried, sir.

How AI is Helping Nigerian Students Earn First Class Degrees

By Prof. Chris Imumolen

In recent years, there has been a noticeable spike in the number of First Class graduates emerging from both private and government-owned universities in Nigeria. This phenomenon has sparked curiosity about whether Nigerian students have suddenly become more academically focused or if there has been an unprecedented leap in intelligence levels. The reality, however, is tied to the integration and widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education.

AI has revolutionized education, providing tools that simplify and accelerate learning processes. For instance:AI-Powered Research Tools: Students can generate theses, essays, and even comprehensive project work within seconds using platforms like ChatGPT, Jasper AI, and others.Problem-Solving Applications: Complex mathematical equations and scientific problems can now be solved instantaneously using AI tools like Wolfram Alpha or Symbolab, Language Proficiency: AI language tools have bridged gaps in grammar and expression, enabling students to deliver polished and well-articulated work. These tools make academic tasks more accessible, often leading to exceptional performance. However, this raises critical concerns about the authenticity of academic achievements.

Despite its benefits, the heavy reliance on AI poses significant threats to traditional learning and critical thinking:

Mental Laziness: Many students now depend on AI for tasks that were traditionally handled by personal effort and intellectual rigor, leading to diminished cognitive engagement,

Superficial Knowledge: AI-assisted work does not necessarily translate to actual understanding or mastery of subjects, as students may excel in grades without being able to demonstrate real-world knowledge,

Ethical Concerns: The use of AI in exams and assignments has blurred the lines between academic integrity and malpractice, making it harder to assess genuine performance.

The presence of AI is undeniable and transformative. For educators and institutions to adapt effectively, they must: Acknowledge AI’s Permanence: AI is here to stay, and instead of resisting, educators must incorporate it into teaching strategies to enhance, rather than replace, learning, Upgrade Educational Techniques: Teachers and lecturers must embrace technological advancements, using AI to design more interactive and thought-provoking lessons., Develop AI-Detection Tools: Systems capable of identifying AI-generated work should be integrated into grading systems to ensure fair assessments, Emphasize Critical Thinking: Institutions should focus on fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and independent reasoning in students.

AI has undoubtedly made learning more accessible and academic success easier to achieve. However, true education extends beyond grades; it involves nurturing a generation that can think, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society. Educators must champion this balance, ensuring that AI is a tool for enhancement rather than a crutch that stifles genuine intellectual growth.

The rise in First Class graduates is both an achievement and a challenge for Nigerian education. How we address the integration of AI today will determine the quality of education and intellect in the future
The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT for writing projects and thesis is NOT allowed in academia. If you are caught in advanced Unis or other institutions, you will be penalized.

RapportNaija:
Nigerians in authority or some form of power baffle me...

Most University degrees in Nigeria are for 4 years plus of study, with undergrads having to go through rigorous manual test & exams from 100 to 400 level...mostly without the use of any tech device.

So how does AI help in the case of instant assessments that involves just a paper and biro?

I know for a fact that many mathematical courses even violates the use of scientific calculators.

So how do you credit the rise in First Class Graduates to AI when it could only be used for maybe regular assignments and final year research projects that's mostly just 6 units?

Please, free Naija students!

From the author down to majority of the commenter, this tread is overwhelmed with ignorance. How does AI even help people that are 90% accessed with the use of any electronics? 99% of examinations in Nigeria today are written in classroom with paper and biro, unlike developed countries. Where is the resources for e-learning in Nigeria self?

Nonsense. I'm one of the last set of Nigerian students that graduated before AI (Chatgpt) became mainstream. These professors really showed us shege. I definitely should have gotten a higher grade if not for these sadistic professors. I recall a course I took as elective (because it was clearly stated as an elective course). Of course, this meant I picked the course over another elective. The professor of the one I didn't pick actually forced me to retake his exam, threatening to give me an extra year if I didn't. Or there was this silly course that was 0 unit where the lecturer failed all of us so that we could carry it over because many people didn't attend his lecturers

You are clearly one of those that feels every student should struggle before they can make good grades.

The world is moving and leaning towards AI and Advanced technology but one Oshodi Educationist is bothered about AI affecting grades and quality of education...

You don't have to be afraid of anything. It will take more than a generation before the average Nigerian student can catch up with his/her foreign counterpart(s)

Have you ever watched the Terminator series? Terminator 1, T2, etc? In there, it is assumed that humanity will develop superintelligent artificial general intelligence that will proceed to attempt the extermination of humans(extinction level event), just like a meteor strike, nuclear holocaust or a super-volcanic eruption are extinction level events.

The trouble with AGI(Artificial General Intelligence) is that we have no experience of this extinction agent and hence cannot actually say much how such an extinction event would actually occur, I'll tell you what I think though. Humanity doesn't have to actually achieve Artificial General Intelligence for AI to pose a threat to human civilizations, AI just have to be sophisticated enough for enough people to believe it to be intelligent, a thing that is already happening. I've got news for you, the future of humanity is doomed.

Continous assessment is always around 30-40% of the total grade score and I know it makes almost no sense to allow phones or tables in exam halls. Only assignments can be aced with AI tools in a proper setting.

True... Kids don't even go to library these days. They just stay in their rooms and browse for all what they need. I doubt they even know how to search for books in a library.
Was telling my friend the other day, this generation are very lucky to have AI to support them with their studies. They have all the answers they need in a matter of seconds. Unlike our time, that you had to sift through voluminous books looking for answers.
