Some might argue that IB adds little value to the world too.
It's just a cash-grab underwriting endeavour.

value is heavily subjective.
God bless you.

Become an investment banker. I know people that left big4 to become investment bankers. There is money in that career. Get ready to pass your CFA sha.
Please Is it compulsory to have CFA to do and progress in investment banking? Can an ACCA do investment banking?

You need CFA to progress as an investment banker.

Anyone who tells you to choose tax over investment banking is mad. Investment banking is the apogee of the career in finance

Not true. Even aca or acca suffices. But getting the CFA qualification is very good. An MBA from the top business schools in the world is best

It easier to pass MBa than CFa, go and ask questions.

Annahh do you have knowledge about this?

Also, can one with Chartered institute of stockbrokers certificate work in the Big 4?

Big 4 needs ican or Acca but you can enter and start writing Acca.

So it's easier to get Harvard,Wharton, nyu MBA,Yale,Oxford, instead,Cambridge,Fuqua MBA etc than cfa?The major requirement is actually having experience and starting early. For example,if you don't have prior experience of investment banking before a top MBA,it's very difficult for investment banking/PE/Venture capital to recruit you from a top MBA program.

I personally don't buy the CISB certification, in my opinion i see it as very restricted and limited. it doesn't really give you very many options in finance.
i maybe wrong, but i think most CISB holders are already experienced stockbrokers that need the extra certification to either elevate in their current or prospective position, have their own firm or for the good old bragging right.
Not very many entry and mid-level stockbrokers hold the certification.
What i am trying to say in essence is, as an entry level professional still finding his path in the ever dynamic and interrelated world of finance certifications from the CFA, ICAN, ACCA gives you broader access.
Some CFA holders held certifications from ICAN and ACCA and only got into the CFA to further cement their competence in finance (Most likely when they had moved from routine accounting/audit/financial reporting and similar roles)
So, my guy, i no fit tell u wetin to do oo, but e go beta make u go do ICAN, ACCA or CFA. i intentionally ranked them in this order consider cost and global acceptability.
CFA, ICAN and ACCA holder can work in stockbroking, but i don't think CISB holder can work competently and comfortably in Investment Banking, Audit and Accounting.
All this are in my opinion.

You do audit in a big four?
Re: Tax In A Big Four Audit Firm Or Investment Banking by Danielrex(m): 12:16pm On Feb 06, 2023
The CISB accreditation only applies to stocks and securities trading; it may not be applicable in the investment banking world.
ICAN/ACCA may (or should) continue to fly, in my opinion, because part of their course content would be useful in the investment banking practice.

I honestly believe that having (passing) academic degrees is far easier than professional certificates.
If you've tried ICAN or ACCA, you'll agree that it's a completely different ballgame than your BSc experience.
This is not to disparage MScs and MBAs, but I believe academic programs have a more casual and easy-to-understand approach, whereas most professional certifications require a high level of discipline and self-motivation to begin, attempt, and ultimately qualify.

Old thread but Yale SOM isn’t regarded in the industry. A HSW (Harvard, Stanford and Wharton MBA) will open unimaginable doors.

MBA programs are not reputed for their academic rigor. It is more for networking.

I would advise you go for a Big 4 firm.
The knowledge and exposure you will get is far better than what an investment bank would offer you.
Remember that the Big 4 have clients in different sectors and cities across Nigeria. The pay may not be fantastic, but the long-term benefit is great. But you have to be ready to write and pass either ICAN or ACCA.
A 5-10 years experience in a Big 4 could catapult you to work anywhere in the world.
I know about 10 people from Big 4 firms who now live and work abroad, and were employed directly from Nigeria.

Investment banking would be great if only you write and pass the CFA exams. But Nigerian banks are never reliable so you still have to work and pray that you don't get retrenched and laid off.
Hello.
I know this is an old thread by I need an information to make a crucial decision please.

Those people who exited Big 4 to roles in another country, you have any idea which countries they are?

People are saying accounting is not a profession in shortage that will make employers from overseas bring employees from another country.

They can actually work anywhere, as long as you have quality experience and relevant certifications. I know many who went to UK and Europe in the last two years. I also know a few that went to work in the US and canada (fewer that the UK folks)

That’s satisfying to hear.

If I may ask, do you know which roles they were placed in Nigeria, and their roles abroad(e.g Audit, Advisory, etc)?

I know people across the three lines that have moved and are still moving.

In terms of opportunities and exposure investment banking is higher than tax in rating.

However, the pedigree of the company providing the investment banking opportunity matters. A big 4 experience on your CV whether tax or audit opens doors faster to get foreign jobs in the UK, Canada, Australia etc than the I.B experience in a local bank here.

Also there is relative better job stability with the big four tax work than with the I.B due to the fact that the investment sector is more volatile and subject to economic fluctuations and business cases.

So in the short term, if you want the big cash and also intend to stay in 9ja for long and is okay with the potential job security risk (if there's recession for instance), go for the investment banking opportunity.

But if you are a japa candidate, working with KPMG, PwC, Deloitte or EY would open doors for you much more seamlessly abroad while you can also still excel locally but may be limited to a CFO ceiling in Nigeria which is not bad at all.
I hope you are aware that Tax laws are different across countries.
How will tax experience in Nigeria be beneficial should one decide to relocate abroad later?

What is the investment bank? -- it matters!
Big 4 looks good on d CV home & abroad with endless industry opportunities. Audit can be quite boring & excruciating but has good exit opportunities. If I were you, I would eye a move to strategy consulting or corporate finance in the big 4.

Investment banking (in d biggest banks) promises some more money than audit/tax and can be more interesting than audit/tax. But direct global mobility isn't there and hours can be crazier than audit. Also, you are limited to IBs & CF depts of the few firms that have CF.
Hello Sir. Permit me to pick your brain on an issue.

There is a unit in some big 4s called “Deals Advisory”. Some have it as “Strategy and Transactions”. They basically do M&A advisory, Business valuations, Financial due diligence among others. It relates to IB a little.

Do you feel anyone working in this line will benefit direct global mobility should he decide to move abroad?

Also, what opportunities will Strategy consulting at Big 4 present to people who move abroad? I also noticed consulting, especially in the US, prefers candidates from Target schools.

Finally, I haven’t heard of Corporate Finance roles at the Big. Can you shed more light Sir?
Thank you.

Wow! I guess moving from Tax might be more problematic due to varying Tax practices regionally.

Thanks!

Maybe not problematic. The chances are not as high as other fields but tax principles are the same.
But have I seen tax people move to other countries? The answer is yes
