Nobody is forcing them, their Ikwerre language is Igbo. If you see someone speaking Yoruba, you will say that person is a Yoruba without asking, the same if you see someone speaking Ikwerre dialect, you will see the person as Igbo because the Ikwerre he is speaking is what is known as Igbo Language worldwide.

Ikwerrres were part of Eastern Nigeria before creation of state in May 1967. They were excised from present day Imo and Abia states in 1967. This was purely political expediency.

The war was fought,and Gowon felt isolating Igbo of southeast will weaken their resistance in the civil war because they had no seaport to receive supplies from friendly countries supporting the war.

It's therefore foolhardy for anybody to say Ikwerrres are not Igbo. Rotimi Amaechi vowed that nobody can take away his Igbo ancestry. On the contrary, The drunkard and political nitwit, Nyesom Wike said he's not Igbo. He is ikwerrre and shares local government with Rotimi Amaechi.

Ikwerre was in the eastern region that was created by the British just like a few other minority ethnic groups. Even before independence, Ikwerre like most of the other ethnicities were already agitating to be separated from Igbo people into their own region the reason why they represented at the Willinks Commission in1957 three years before independence. They wouldn’t be at that conference if they identified as Igbo. In 1965 three years before the war and while Igbo were controlling the dead eastern region just by reason of their population and nothing more, Ikwerre made it clear that they are neither Igbo, Ijaw etc but Ikwerre in what is today known as Rumuomasi declaration.

Ikwerre never identified as Igbo even when Igbo people were running and pillaging the defunct and dead eastern region. Before the war, Ikwerre along with other ethnicities like Ijaw, Efik and other groups even met with Ojukwu and told him of their desire to be separated from Igbo people. Gowan only wanted their support by giving them what they were asking for long before the war. Your lying parents never told you the truth.
