I once had a colleague at work who was Ikwerre and speaks Igbo but would fight anyone calling him Igbo. I think there are historical reasons which haven't been properly analysed or explained.

It is post civil war politics. After the civil war, the Niger Delta states especially Rivers had a large concentration of indigenous igbos. So to get any post in the civil service you had to deny your igbo heritage and ancestry. Most even went as far as changing their names adopting Horsefal, Iworiso, Fubara etc.
