So it's my first time buying a vehicle.
What are the documents I should ask of?

Umm. The major one is if it's Nigeria used. Vehicle particulars it comes in full pack. The ownership certificate, road worthiness and 3rd party insurance certificate. The last one is custom clearance document (optional). They must be the original copy and the owner should tender drivers license or voters card copy. The name must tally with that of the vehicle particulars. And the bank account to transfer to must be the same with the names on the particulars, except its from dealership otherwise it’s a red flag. And lastly an agreement note of transfer of the car with the amount stated on it. Both party signed on it and keep each copy. That's all.

But if it's toks you will need waybill invoice, custom clearance and receipts that's all

Ask for the following documents...

1. Customs Papers: This document is proof that the car was imported legally into the country and that all import duties have been paid. Without this document, your car can easily be impounded and heavy fines would be placed on you, because it would be obvious that the current owner smuggled the car into the country.

2. Vehicle License: This document shows that the car is registered and licensed to be driven on Nigerian roads. It's usually displayed on the car's windscreen. The engine number, chassis number, and registration number of the car are all listed in these documents. Verify that these details correspond to those on the car.

3. Certificate of Roadworthiness: When buying a used car in Nigeria, this is one of the documents you should look out for. Every vehicle in Nigeria must pass a roadworthiness test before it may be driven. And make sure you check the date to ensure it's not expired cos the certificate is usually valid for one year after which you'll have to go and renew it again. If the certificate has expired, locate the closest VIO office around you to renew it.

4. Records of Insurance Usually this comes with the license and registration. So request for it. Because if the car is duly registered, it should have at least third party insurance papers. Without insurance, your car stands the risk of getting impounded.

5. Proof of Ownership: This is to be sure that you're not buying a stolen car which can land you in serious problems. You must ask for the original purchase invoice or receipt, which proves the seller's legal ownership of the car.

Since it's used. You can send the chasis and engine number to police if the car has not been flagged as a stolen vehicle
Plate number receipt.(some police use this paper to cause problem) tho you can change the plate number immediately u purchase the car
