The godfather of Lagos buys everything and everybody, that's why his thirst for money is insatiable; his end goal (politically) is a one-party state in the image of Mobutu's Zaire, or Kim Il Sung's Korea, etc.

He does not care whether the public loses faith in the activist or not, just bring him into the fold and it's one less irritant to worry about. And then he uses the armed-services to suppress and if necessary disappear the dissenters who don't have a popular public-persona to protect themselves or to bargain with.
