What if the people he robbed don die or they are your own family members.

This is why criminals get away with crimes in Nigeria..
That boy denied everything. They wrote his statements for him at the police station

Good to pardon based on the low gravity of the crime.

But why celebrate a pardoned criminal?

This is Joseph of our time. From jail to the king’s palace.
Joseph did not steal a fowl.

You Nigerians are just a special breed, bcoz I don't know why you couldn't see how the governor is using the situation as a political advantage.
The governor knows you guys are very emotional and sentimental, therefore riding on the advantage of the unfortunate situation.

We're all educated, we should understand better than illiterates out there. It doesn't have to be AK47, ordinary knife is a weapon.
You really need to sit down and think carefully before you pick a side on a sensitive matter as such.
I want to assume that you have a frustration with theft, and I don't condone stealing in any form myself. However, don't you think it's unrealistic to assume that someone stealing a chicken would typically use a weapon? Comparing a chicken thief to an armed robber doesn't quite add up. The motivations and level of danger are vastly different. Perhaps we should focus on finding more proportionate and effective ways to address petty theft, rather than resorting to the death penalty.

That's my point!

No it wasn't an Ak-47. It doesn't matter if it was a knife, sword, club or gun. Any deadly weapon make it a robbery.
Does one need to use a weapon to rob steal a chicken? Na wa o!

You didn't follow the initial story, it was a case of a witch hunting. Person dey him house jeje and they roped him into what he didn't do.

Stealing or robbery? Why is it so hard to report this story correctly? If you guys believe robbery shouldn't carry a capital punishment that's fine. Just don't lie about the nature of the crime.
I read the full story elsewhere. According to that report, the issue is that those who were caught initially confessed and confirmed that this guy and the other one jailed were not involved. His problem was lack of funds to "settle". His dad was asked to pay 30k but he could only raise 20k. The culprits were released while he was tried and jailed.

Thank God the governor is wiser than you. An innocent person dey him house jeje and they called him to the police station next thing he stole. Try to know a matter before judging. This was a case of witch hunting.

One can steal without a weapon like the politicians. Segun Olowookere chose to robbery to obtain the chicken. That's why he was convicted for robbery.

It is not about what you or I think, it is about what really went down at the time and what evidence was presented before the judge. The police might have lied against them in court most especially as the guy revealed that his father couldn't provide the amount the police demanded. May be the police exaggerated his offences before the judge.

Comparing a chicken thief to an armed robber doesn't quite add up. The motivations and level of danger are vastly different.
There is a difference between "a chicken thieve" and "ARMED robber" but there is no difference if both of them are ARMED. And no judge would sentence a robber who is not armed during a robbery operation to death unless he committed murder anyway.

Perhaps we should focus on finding more proportionate and effective ways to address petty theft, rather than resorting to the death penalty.

That's my point!
A petty thief who goes on operation with weapon has intention to kill if his victims refuse to comply. It is not about the size of what he wanted to steal but how determined he was to have his way even if it involved killing.

That was a lie. I covered this story, it was young kids between 12 and 13 years old that testified against him that he sent them, he didn't even rob or at the scene. He was arrested at home where he resides with his parent. The fowls were his uncle oo.

Immediate retirement too soft he should be disgrace and strip off his judge robe, gratuities, and even jail him.

And that police DPO should trace, dismiss and send to jail.

I have never heard of such judgement in my life even North Korea will not sentence someone to death because of chicken.
A compulsory retirement was imposed on him because he was found wanting for a different case.

He was a teenager back then, not like he was a hardened criminal. He might have leant his lesson while growing up in prison. This is a second chance for him, he should know better than to fvck it up, not many people got this kind of grace. He was aspiring to become a doctor while in prison

Something is fundamentally wrong with the judiciary. The judge who passed that verdict should be sent on an immediate retirement.
And u believe any sane man would pass such judgement on fellow human being? The guy was charged for harmed robbery in which a person died in the process. Stealing of fowl is just one of the count charges leveled against him.

This story does not add up and I blame the Yoruba press for not getting to the bottom of it or at least investigate it. The danger of Yorubaland being an occupied territory.

How can boys of that age go and break into a police house to steal chickens, then get a death sentence when murderers are roaming free?

What I think happened is, the boy is innocent of the crime and the police involved had a relationship with the boy or his mother. Sexually abused the boy and framed him with stolen chicken charges to cover up his crime. It could also have been a failed ritual and they just had to lock him up to keep something hidden. That boy was put in prison to hide a big secret
