Adeleke To Spend Another N2.5Billion On Refreshments, Meals In 2025 budget

In a period marked by economic challenges and developmental gaps, the Osun State Government has proposed a whopping N2.5 billion allocation for refreshments and meals in its 2025 budget.

This figure represents a significant increase from the N1.8 billion earmarked for the same purpose in 2024.

Osun Defender had reported that Governor Ademola Adeleke on Monday, December 30, signed the N427 billion 2025 budget after approval by the Osun State House of Assembly.

According to a detailed review of the proposed budget, the state spent N527 million on refreshments and meals between January and September 2024 alone. This substantial expenditure has raised concerns about the state’s spending priorities, given the pressing needs of its citizens.

Beyond refreshments, the 2025 budget also highlights other contentious allocations. A total of N1.662 billion has been set aside for honorarium and sitting allowances, surpassing the N1.3 billion allocated in 2024. Between January and September of the previous year, the state had already spent N764 million on these allowances.

Another area of concern is the N2.7 billion earmarked for publicity and advertisements, which dwarfs allocations for critical sectors such as healthcare. For instance, medical expenses and supports were allocated N446.5 million for 2025, a steep drop from the N693 million budgeted in 2024.

Similarly, the welfare package allocation saw a significant jump to N15.6 billion in 2025, compared to the N9.1 billion in 2024. Meanwhile, the budget for subscription to professional bodies skyrocketed from N266.8 million in 2024 to an astonishing N11.3 billion in 2025.

Education and sports, though crucial for youth development, received more modest increases. The budget for direct teaching and laboratory costs rose to N344 million in 2025 from N279.5 million in 2024, while sporting activities were allocated N862 million, up from N820.7 million in the previous year.

Observers have also pointed out the N421.9 million allocated for election logistics support, which more than doubles the N188.8 million spent on the same purpose in 2024.
