President Bola Tinubu has said he removed the subsidy on fuel to safeguard the future of Nigerians.

Tinubu said he couldn’t allow Nigeria to go bankrupt, hence the need to remove the subsidy on fuel.

He disclosed this during a town hall meeting with the people of Enugu State after inaugurating some of the projects built by Governor Peter Mbah on Saturday.

According to Tinubu: “We must build this house called Nigeria to not just satisfy our immediate need, but our tomorrow too. That’s why the removal of the fuel subsidy was necessary. We cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they’re born.”

Tinubu had announced the removal of the subsidy on petrol on May 29, 2023.

His actions led to a hike in the prices of commodities, with some of his critics condemning the policy as not well thought out.

US subsidizes petrol. Last year, exxon mobil and other oil giants got 11 billion dollars in tax write offs. States like Alaska, outside subsidizing fuel, also gives its citizens welfare checks from oil sales.

I can understand the need for the removal of subsidy in Nigeria. When politicians have looted everywhere, funds for subsidy payments became endangered. Tinubu cut it off. Yet nothing got down about the Nigerian budget been padded by over 500 billion. Nothing has been done to cut down the cost if governance.

Nigeria can't subsidize fuel for her people but the savings from subsidy removal gets looted again by the elite in power.

You pull down the family house with a leaking roof and send the people away without any alternative to save them from the cold - Imagine such stupidity.

You bankrupted Nigerians to save Nigeria? Is that not a form of population control you bought from Western neo-colonists?

Your approach failed and the intentions were not yours. You were deceived to follow such an unmitigated disaster hence quit defending it and look for how best to reduce the stubborn inflation wiping out the middle-class and bankrupting cooperations.

But Nigeria will not go bankrupt when Tinubu buys a new armored Cadillac Escalade SUV for himself, discarding the Mercedes Benz Maybach S-Class that Buhari used. Nigeria will not go bankrupt when he buys a new aircraft, a new yacht, and engages in frivolous foreign trips around the world, including medical tourism to the UK and France, while failing to build a world-class hospital in Lagos State.

Nigeria will not go bankrupt when he himself and those around him are engaging in wanton embezzlement of our commonwealth.
