Once upon a time in Nigeria, when you heard someone was a fraudster, it carried a heavy weight of shame. But now? The term "Yahoo boy" has become almost casual, as if we're talking about a new trend instead of a criminal act. The damage? It's more than just stolen dollars it’s stolen dignity, a tarnished reputation, and a future sold short.

Yahoo boys have made it harder for honest Nigerians to thrive. Imagine applying for a visa or trying to close a legitimate international deal, only to be met with suspicion because “Nigerians are scammers.” Our public image has been dragged through the mud, and it’s not just affecting the fraudsters. it’s affecting all of us.

Yet, somehow, it’s become a norm. Young girls now dream of dating them because they can sponsor their lavish lifestyles. Clubs are filled with men popping bottles bought with stolen funds while we all dance along. Songs glorify them, movies romanticize them, and society excuses them. “Na hustle,” they say, as if theft can ever be justified.

But why has this culture taken root? Maybe it’s because the government has failed to provide opportunities for young people. When education feels like a scam and job hunting becomes a joke, desperation takes over. “Why work for 30k a month when I can make millions with one click?” That’s the mindset, and it’s a dangerous one.

We need to ask ourselves:

What has the government done to create jobs and inspire hope?
Why hasn’t there been stricter enforcement to curb cybercrime?

How can we collectively reshape this narrative so that “yahoo” becomes unacceptable, not aspirational?

It’s time to say no to Yahoo boys. They’re not heroes; they’re thieves. They’re not hustlers; they’re ruining lives. And if we don’t change this culture, we’ll all pay the price in the long run.

How can we reverse this dangerous trend?

It's gone be hard and the people who are meant to stop it are they not thieves themselves?

I personally hate scammers and fraudsters and I'll gladly watch them pay for their crimes cos they've hit me once and a friend recently.

If I were the president we'd pass a law that makes it compulsory for landlords to do kyc for all prospective tenants and only give houses to people they find ok.

Also if they can make make those punishment to be something like a temporary ban from using financial institutions etc
Or even drastically reduction the transaction limit and amount they can receive within few months

It's one of the lesser evils we have as part of how much we've come in societal and global evolution as an entity.


It is always there somewhere; and always will be, the greed, the urge to covert, steal, scope, scam, to cheat.

I know many parents especially single mothers who proudly told me that their kids are into yahoo.
When one of the boys bought a car, the woman disturbed everyone's whatsapp status praising her son for being a young millionaire.
This same single mother can go for church night vigils like say tomorrow no dey.

Armed robbers might unite to rob a bank, but once the bank has been robbed the armed robbers might rob each other to receive the largest loot. After all they are criminals, why should they be fair with other criminals?

If armed robbers are honest and fair with their fellow armed robbers then they might not be totally evil.

If Yahoo boys do not scam their girlfriends and family members maybe they are not so bad. But seeing how some of them use their friends and family for rituals, it's clear that those around them are potential victims.

If everyone is fine with Yahoo then it's everyone's problem.

Very foolish post... Buhari looted Nigerian for complete 8 years and most of you criticizing Yahoo boys will worship buhari anytime a big criminal. They will worship our politicians like gods.
