But seeing that it was during a one on one teaching session which probably was the teacher going extra mile to help him get his work right, I as his parent won't be too mad at her. He didn't sustain any injury nor was he crying as to show excessive pain. This shows that there was a level of restraint from her although her actions are unacceptable.
There was no shouting, insults or cursing from the teacher. This shows she was still collected and in control of the situation despite not getting the expected result from the kid. She's at fault though and more should be demanded from her but it shouldn't be an overkill.
Prejudice and sentimentality can make one alter proportionate judgement. Intentions and actions are things a good judge consider before delivering a verdict.

You know very well that if you receive just one of the slaps that child received there'd certainly be tears in your eyes, how much less or more a child of that age!

Please, if you want one on one tutoring for you child, get a kind and considerate person who will not emotionally damage your child for life. The person in that video should not be teaching at all.

Your problem is that you're just too emotional. Go and reread what I wrote again. I didn't justify her action in any way. I CONDEMNED IT entirely. My main focus is on how she should be disciplined. From the video I saw here, my judgement was that there wasn't any malicious intent from her to harm the child. She continued teaching the child and didn't show extreme signs of frustration. These are things to consider when judging her.

You all should just chill. Teaching that age group is not easy. If you are not careful they will turn u into a witch. A teacher should never hit a child with hand in my opinion though. You know how many lost their first, second or third job cos of carrying naija attitudes and behaviour to work. They will not tell you so. Nigerians are very aggressive and dangerously envious of one another abroad.

It has nothing to do with pressure ...or the curriculum. It has everything to do with the incompetence of the teacher. I can understand flogging a child to focus ...not agree with it ...but understand. As a teacher ...she should see where he is going wrong and correct him ... show him the right way ...in this case 6 . Does he even understand she is talking about 6? Even if he does...she did not teach him ....she slapped him as if that would make him write it correctly. Stop making excuses for the teacher...she is incompetent.... cannot teach .

Let us not fool ourselves, Maeve. Let us be totally unbiased here. A lot of us in Nigeria here that grew up before the advent of social media know that this is the way of life here. It is what it is. I'm not saying it is right, but it is what it is. Even those crying for the teacher's head prolly got smacked more times than they can remember when growing up.

However, like my friend pointed out, this is how a society progresses. Something that was once common is phased out when new knowledge comes. Now a lot of schools no longer allow corporal punishment even though it helped in putting so many kids in line. Society has discovered other effective methods to discipline kids without physically beating them like animals, so slowly, these archaic methods are being phased out.

I believe this is a private school. The person recording this video should have intervened by confronting the teacher and reporting to the head mistress. If nothing is done, then she can report to lagos state government. But then again for those of us that went to military secondary school. This one na moi moi.
