A midnight fire has killed a 24-year-old woman identified as Jumai Sunday and her infant son, Nasir Rabiu, in Abuja.

The deceased, DAILY POST learnt, hailed from the Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The incident reportedly occurred in a house at Kugbo Furniture Market in the Municipal Area Council, AMAC, of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the fire outbreak happened while the woman and her only son were in a deep sleep on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The eyewitnesses said the deceased’s burnt bodies were discovered by neighbours and sympathisers during efforts to rearrange the property after firefighters had finished controlling the situation.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the police officer in charge of the Karu Division in Abuja, Lakur Langyi, said his men received distress calls at midnight on Wednesday from the area and moved to the scene, where they discovered a woman and her son burnt to death.

He said the source of the fire was yet to be ascertained, adding that the police have since begun an investigation into the matter.

“Yes, there was a fire incident in Kugbo at a place called Bakassi. My men got distress calls at midnight Wednesday and moved to the area, where they discovered a woman, identified as Jumai Sunday, with her one-and-a-half-year-old boy burnt to death,” he said.

The victims have since been buried in Kugbo Cemetery off the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Expressway.

They probably died in their sleep from the smoke and fumes even before the fire got them. Smoke is mostly the killer in a fire outbreak.

I have a cousin who can sleep off in less than three minutes after hitting the bed. He sleeps so deep that you can bundle and drop him outside his door while you empty the rest of the house.

I can never understand how people can sleep to the point where a fire starts in the apartment and burns well enough to give off fumes that can suffocate you while in that same sleep. Even if I'm like "fvck-a-brother" high, you only need to knock once and I'm shuffling to the door.

Which kind mumu sleep come be this one?!

The human body is not wired to snap out of a deep sleep situation in the cases of inhalation.
It's not really a superpower if you can, and it doesn't warrant jarring at someone else.
Factors like ventilation, concentration of the fumes, and duration of exposure matter more.

And respiration itself is involuntary, we basically don't do anything for it to happen. It's rather unfortunate that it happened, not that it's mumu sleep.
It takes about 1-2 minutes to go completely unconscious from inhaling toxic fumes from carbon monoxide.
This puts a small window for anyone sleeping to even react, and it's actually a rapid decline.
In the case of fire accidents, smoke detectors are more trustworthy than our abilities, abeg..
